Ok, I'm little into mass effect 1 but I can definetely say... THE COMBAT F*CKING SUCKS! I love the RPG aspect (although I prefer DA:Origins), the story, and character design (although Bioware kinda ruined it by already showing Shepard's face, now no face seems right) and I want to keep playing badly, as the story and script are amazing. I played Mass Effect 2 and 3 demo and the combat is MUCH better. Cover is smooth and it's very cinematic. But the RPG is not nearly as good as the first. Will I have trouble playing the 2nd one first?
Mass Effect 2 before 1?

YMMV but for me I'd say you're getting the story arse backwards. It's like starting Lord of the Rings with The Two Towers and the first couple of chapters of Return of the King before diving into Fellowship. And yeah, the combat ain't all that sophisticated compared to the later games but I'd argue that it's incidental, and again when you start with ME1 you see the other way round: mediocre combat improving in the second game. For my money it's not actually bad so much as different in some annoying minor ways, most notably the autocover thing. On the other hand you can crouch in ME1 which I found very handy but which for some reason got taken out. Anyway, to answer your question I'd stick with ME1.

I agree with PsiFive. Personally, I did not find the combat in ME1 bad enough to throw out the order of the story and spoil the plot for myself. The combat is improved in ME2 (yay for sniper rifles which do not sway), but it isn't that awful. It is perfectly doable in ME1. Not ideal, but okay.
In ME2 I sometimes got annoyed by how much I was dependent on cover. In ME1 much less so and the shields in ME1 were much more effective. In ME2 now and then one or both companions found cover, stayed there even when the fight was over. At those times I ran unknowingly into the fray alone, without back up.
So even ME2 had here and there some things I wasn't keen on. But I would go for the story in order. If you believe that the story and script is amazing, it would just ruin the experience if you work your way through it backwards.

All right, thx guys. The main reason the combat is so bad to me is because i play on PC. I have mouse lag. I don't want to get it for 360, as I don't have one, and I don't want to play with a controller. i guess I'll post in the PC tech help.

I actually played me2 before one and don't recommend it simply for the fact that I had to replay me2 after playing me1 (due to importing) That said I believe me2 is the best in series.

Likewise, though I'm not getting any lag. Might be why I'm okay with the combat.HollowSkullX wrote...

I guess I was lucky with my PC. I did have ocassional lag, but it wasn't a constant thing. It was most noticeable with the mini-games.
Also, I don't have a computer specced at gaming. So I often accept when the performance is less than perfect.
Whether ME1 or 2 is better, is a matter of personal preference. I still am not sure which one I enjoyed the most. I think, for me, it's atm about even. Some things improved in ME2 and some things I missed from ME1.

All right! thx guys! I'm actually enjoying the combat now. I got a mod to increase performance during combat, fixed my mouse lag, and started a new game as vanguard. The game is awesome now!

@huyre
Well my pc is terrible, but the game runs PERFECTLY at lowest settings and 800x600. It works at a constant 40 fps that way
If I turn it up, I get a constant 10-20 fps
But yeah. Again thx, I'm really looking forward to playing Mass Effect 2
after this. I haven't played a real series since Metal Gear Solid
(which I absoulutey
) I look forward to playing 2 and 3
