Hey there, been trying for around a week now to connect in-game to download the DLC packs that I bought.
I have a Netgear DG834G router, in which I have set myself a permanent IP. To this IP I have opened ports -
8000,8001,18081 (I cannot open port 80 and 400 as they are already opened). I have done this for both TCP and UDP. Here is a typical log when I try to login to Dragon Age.

Sat, 2009-12-12 21:18:49 - TCP Packet - Source:192.168.0.3,XXXXX Destination:159.153.235.3,18081 - [Dragon Age 3 rule match]

Sat, 2009-12-12 21:20:49 - TCP Packet - Source:192.168.0.3,XXXXX Destination:159.153.235.3,18081 - [Dragon Age 3 rule match]

Still its just stuck there, unable to connect. Stays on 'Connecting to Dragon Age servers' for ages until it just says they are not currently available. I sent a help request on the official help boards, but they never respond and its been 6 days since I posted it.

Is there anything anyone can recommend at all? I have had to open ports in the past to host games too, Borderlands, Killing Floor, Starcraft among others. Everytime its worked fine.
I bought the game through Steam it that makes any difference.

I ran out of ideas 2-3 days ago :crying:

Please help anyone if they can.

Have you tried putting your system in the DMZ to see if that fixes the problem? Also, you may have some kind of firewall (other than the windows firewall) blocking you. What Antivirus program do you have and is it a "system-works" type with anti-spyware and anti-phishing, firewall, etc.?

I don't have any anti virus program except windows defender, I have the windows firewall on but I added exception in the Dragon age launcher. The only other firewall is my router, which I have opened the ports required for this. What do you mean putting my system in the DMZ? No clue what that is sorry :)

DMZ = "de-militarized zone" and the term comes from military/war-time terminology that isn't important here. In this context it means that you'd be setting one or more of your internal home LAN IP addresses to be visible and fully-exposed to the internet, bypassing your router's normal firewall. Every router I'm aware of has the capability to enter an internal IP address into this DMZ bypass table.

It's useful for network troubleshooting - and should really only be used for that. The idea is that if you can only connect when your PC is in the DMZ, you're demonstrating the whatever problem you have is related to your network's router configuration (e.g., you haven't opened the proper ports, or forwarded the proper ports to the correct internal LAN IP). It eliminates the PC itself and the game/application from being the source of the problem.

Once you establish the issue is tied to your router configuration, you can/should remove the PC's IP from the DMZ table and begin researching exactly which configuration settings are required to properly run the game/application in question.  In very rare cases, your ISP may be blocking specific ports that can impact some games and apps.  Typically, for the home user, such measures are taken to block well-known ports relating to server functions and file-sharing. But this is rare - and I only mention this for completeness.

If you cannot connect even when your PC's IP is in the DMZ table, then you still may have configuration issues or other problems that are relating to the PC itself, operating system firewall configuration, or perhaps even a problem with the game/application configuration.

P.S. TCP/18081 is needed in your port forwarding table for your router, but not UDP 18081.
Also, I noted that on my Win7x64 system, Windows Firewall exceptions were added during installation - I didn't need to touch those, other than to approve the exception pop-up during install, as I recall.  In any case, I didn't touch Windows Firewall at all - but there are entries for all required Dragon Age executables there already.

There is a website that escapes me atm, but it has info for many games and how to setup routers for many router brands/models.  I would google that up before futzing around with DMZ tables.

Hmm all right, I did enable all ports opened in the router for a brief time to see if that would solve it, alas it did not. Should I try with disabling windows firewall and windows bit defender to see if that might solve it? I can see from the logs that it is trying to connect (port 18081) but it just won't go any further. If i type in wrong password it tells me straight away that its wrong.

I suppose a given manufacturer may have their own unique implementation, but a DMZ table entry should bypass the router's port management and firewall protections entirely. It isn't the same as "enabling all ports opened", because that still runs through your router's firewall rules as we see in the log snippet you'd posted. It should have the same end-result, but not if something is wrong with the router or it's tables. That's why you see the term "DMZ" and not "enable [forward] all ports". Anyway, it sounds like you're leaning towards it not being a router problem, so I'll drop it.

Is 192.168.0.3 the current IP address of the PC you've installed DA on? Confirm that, then maybe see if this site has anything for you:

http://portforward.c...DG834Gindex.htm

it currently has info for ps3 and 360 version of Dragon Age, but not for the PC. However, some or all of the information may be relevant to a PC version, since all it's doing is talking about network router configuration.

Yes the settings and how they set it up there is exactly like I do it. I also downloaded the PFPortCheck Program and verified 18081 port is open. However, it says port 80 and 400 are blocked, which someone posted are also required for Dragon Age. But I'm not allowed to open these as they are already in use by some other setting.

i believe somewhere in the dragon age config tool thing, there is an option "System"-> Dedicated Internet Connection. have you tried that?

Yes I have also tried that.

EA replied to my mail with this -

We are sorry for the inconvenience caused to you. If you have setup a static IP address then please unblock these ports for your IP address:

TCP - 80, 443, 8000, 18081

UDP- 80, 8001

Additionally you may also unblock port

TCP - 9960-9969, 1024-1124, 18000, 18120, 18060, 27900, 28910, 29900

UDP -1024-1124, 18000, 29900

I tried this, and it still didn't work. But it also blocked my connection to WoW for some reason lol, so I removed them again shortly after.

I don't have any other ideas but wanted to comment on:

"...However, it says port 80 and 400 are blocked"

Port 80 is a "Well-Known Port" for web browsing. It's the de-facto standard HTTP port. So if that is reported by the utility as being blocked, I really can't explain that. I think I know the answer from your posts, but just to confirm, are you playing through a corporate or university WAN, where they (for security reasons) are reassigning well-known ports?

Has anyone really noticed what the core problem here is?  It isn't a GAME problem at all, it's still another WEB SITE problem, that potebntially may get better reception if moved to the WEB SITE Help forum.  Has any of the active folks with this somplaint PM'd to a moderator to ask for the thread to be moved there?

Please don't do that.  Bumping a few minutes after a recent added comment is wrong, and can draw attention to yourself you don't want.  Control your impatience better.  Thank you.

No I'm playing from home, so not going through any huge routers. Just my own one that also acts as my modem.
