Hi everyone.
I've started playing baldur's gate 2 again after having played for a while before but never finished it due to exams and a busy point in my life, but now am looking to try again. I've never really been able to get my head around the D&D game mechanics but have always loved the fiction (Forgotten Realms especially) so ill admit im using cheats. im just interested in the story. so on that point i was just wondering who do you think are the best companion set for me to use; from a story perspective i mean because, as i said, combat not a concern. i've previously played as far as part way through spellhold so i dont mind spoilers TOO much but im also not looking for a point by point rundown of every character plot beat or anything.
So does anyone have any suggestions?
thanks:)
Baldur's Gate 2: best "story" companions?

Imoen and Yoshimo are cast in stone, but apart from that go with who you like.
Who do you plan to romance? The options are Jaheira, Aerie, or Viconia for a male pc, Anomen for female. There are however loads of romance mods which completely outshine the vanilla ones, others that remove the race/gender restrictions, or allow all four at once. Assuming you're unmodded, Anomen is widely hated, Aerie is a bit helpless, Jaheira is probably the standard, and also most complex story (read most likely to hit a program glitch), while Viccy is pretty evil, but the most complex character.
How are you planning to cheat? The easiest is probably CLUAConsole:SetCurrentXP("500000") on each group member in turn, followed by CLUAConsole:AddGold("100000"). Note that addgold is an addition while setXP is a replace. Those numbers will give you 100k gold and 500k XP, change as required. CLUAConsole:CreateItem("Bag19") will also give you one of the bags you start ToB with, which contains loads of good generic gear. This means you can loot or buy better stuff, but what you have isn't bad.
EDIT Actually the easiest way to cheat is to download shadowkeeper and do the above changes with that. 500k XP might be too much, you're likely to blow through many fights that you should at least raise a sweat for. There are still quite a few that will leave you looking at your skeletal knuckles, so whatever floats your boat.
In any case, once you've decided your romance, we can fill the rest of the group in. Personally I like Jan hugely, and he goes well with Minsc. Edwin is loads of fun too, with any group. Valygar goes well with Jaheira, Haer'dalis goes well with Yoshimo, but badly (or well, depending) with Aerie. Mazzy is fun with Korgan, or Valygar. On the other hand, certain combinations eventually fight to the death, like Edwin & Minsc.

Purely from a role playing/storyline standpoint, I would have a core party of Minsc, Jaheira and Viconia. By delaying the romance choice between them, you can explore the initial stages of both romances. Then there are pretty bug free mods involving a Nalia Romance and making Mazzy a Paladin. Nothing like having a 4' tall halfling using a 4'6" sword. There is also a Longer Road Mod with more minor side adventures, particularly one involving Minsc and Boo.

Well I'm assuming you're not planning on installing romance mods yet? Although if you plan to play any of the vanilla romances, I really recommended installing the gibberlings 3 fixpack, they can be buggy. Also just to make sure, install the official patch if you don't have it, there's a sticky saying which one and where to get it. It goes after ToB and before anything else.
Some game-breakers will help. Will you allow evil people to join, given you may have to do some bad stuff to drop your reputation, or they will leave? Again you can mod this so they won't with the gibberlings 3 tweak pack. You can also set people not to kill each other, but you may want that from a story point of view.
Really you should play all the NPC's. You could either play them all in one marathon epic playthrough, swapping each one out as you get bored with them, or play 3-4 faster runs with completely different groups. OK tell you what, take Imoen, Jaheira, Minsc, & Yoshimo in the first area. When you get out, add Nalia & Aerie. After a bit swap someone out for Haer'dalis. Just as long as Yoshimo goes to spellhold with you.
EDIT don't remove people you're romancing as this will break the romance. Actually if they die, this may break it too, so perhaps reload, or at least check it's still on track in shadowkeeper.

Dieing per se doesn't break the romances. It's only when the death removes them from the party, such as petrification that breaks romances. The Trademeet genies are famous for this, if you fight them instead of doing their quest.

Well, it's been a while and I mostly focus on a party which is good for battle...So I don't really know which NPCs are the most interesting. I DO recommend taking Jaheira and Edwin, though. Especially the latter 'cus hilarity is bound to happen with him around. XD

Storywise, I would go with Imoen and Yoshimo, though they are not the most awesome ones.

Yup, Yoshimo/Imoen is a given, and I do find Jaheira to be an interesting companion as well as the best female romance option (although her romance is famously bugged all the way to the Nine Hells and back I've always been lucky and what few problems I've had I've been able to fix easily with Shadowkeeper).
Minsc doesn't have a whole lot of "story" exactly, but his humour and interactions with the other party members enrich the overall story nicely.
Mazzy is a character I've only just got around to finishing a play-through with but found her very interesting (and sticking her in the Big Metal Unit tickled me).
Imoen can be dull and whiny, Anomen has a decent arc (possible alignment shift etc) but is rather irritating, Jan tells a lot of his own stories but doesn't have much of a story to him, if you see what I mean (though this may be because I haven't kept him around enough.
Cernd and Keldorn both have significant issues in their personal lives that may mean them leaving your party permenantly - this makes them good choices from a story perspective as it provides drama and leaves you open to explore other characters.

wow thanks. sorry i just checked this now but i didn't expect such a fast response and had been finishing Valkyria Chronicles (which is surprisingly great and would recommend it). It's nice to know that there's still such a dedicated fan base for a game as old as this.
But yeah, i installed the g3 fix pack or whatever its called and have just left the initial dungeon as a male human paladin. thats all the commitment ive put into it thus far. but thank for the info i'm commited to finishing it this time. im gonna screw around with all the companions this time and see who clicks with me. was planning on having one or two revolving slots for experimenting, at least at first.
cheers

If you like redeeming others, then I would go with Viconia as the romance. When you reach ToB add the guy woh helps you out into your party as well. So the team would then look something like this;
CharName
Viconia
Imoen/Yoshimo
ToB Extra Character (Hint: Keep Sarevok's Sword!)/ Korgan, Minsc, or Keldorn
Edwind/Jan (Their both hilarious in their own right!)
Anyone you want.
Of course these are all just suggestions and you don't have to follow any of it. Just a suggestion party if you like stories with redemption in them.

I am currently replaying BG 2 myself as my Elven Sorc again, and I decided to be a little non-standard in my party choices.
Aside from making sure I had the Nathaniel and Kelsey mods installed (and a few other NPC mods like Sarah, Solaufein, Faren, and Arath); and picking up Nate (but not Kelsey for this playthru) - I decided to go with Nalia, Anomen, Keldorn, Jaheira, and Nate as I already said.
And I know it might be considered heresy but so far I am actually enjoying playing with Anomen - okay as a male I can't romance him - for the most part he seems pretty interesting if a little twisted.
He is also a little pompous and a bit mean sometimes; but he strikes me as someone who was raised to be a self centred douchebag by an equally self centred douchebag parent, and unlike said parent recognises that character flaw in himself and struggles to be better than that. The fact that he isn't always successful at supressing his inherent dickishness, and the fact that he can go Mental at his possible Epic Failure At Life is completely human.
He seems to me like a bit of a tragic figure, if not very sympathetic. I am finding him a lot more relatable than say Aerie, or Jaheira (both of whom I despise and get rid of as soon as I no longer "need" them).
I wonder if part (not all mind) of the hostility towards Anomen is that when he goes mental he can attack and possibly kill Aerie. And for some reason I find difficult to fathom lots of people seem to love Aerie, in spite of the fact that she does nothing but whine and whinge. Oh, and die. Lots.
