Each time you purchase a spell or talent in its category (two handed weapons, entropy, etc) a small bar above extends to indicate you have advanced in that area. Is there any sort of bonus to spending points in a certain area/filling the bar?

It was cut content. It was intended that heavily investing in a tree would reduce the cost of spells/skills. They scrapped the system. Whats left is just a relic from when they attempted it.
