Lets be honest. Femshep is good, no doubt about that. But is she really THAT good? Lets go over the pros and cons of each...

FemShep Pros:
1. Strong female lead in what is otherwise a predominatly male played game.
2. Some good lines and comments to charecters.
Cons:
1. Every line she says sounds like she is overcompinsating and always tries to sound tougher then men. This is done bassicly in every action movie and tv show. Face it, its getting kind of old. Women dont have to sound tough to be tougher than men:D

ManShep Pros:
1. Meer's VA has gotten better for each game. Think it is sad that he is always pushed aside over Hale. Both are good, and both have strengths and weakneses in diffent areas. For example, Meer is better at the paragon while Hale is better for renegade imo.
2. VA more even to what is happening in the game IMO
Cons:
1. Mass Effect 1 he was kind of wooden. Have to admit he got better in 2 and 3 i think all can agree at least:)

Whatever your opinions are write them here and be nice. No trolling or hating.

I think both are great. I play FemShep because I can get into the role more if the protagonist and I are the same gender, but I've done some BroShep playthroughs and enjoyed it regardless.

I do agree about Jennifer Hale though. She tries a little bit too hard sometimes.

Femshep is awesome because the voice acting makes her completely believable. Admittibly she has her bad moments, and she sounds like she lives hard on cigars and whiskey, but thats all part of the charm.

Maleshep is terrible in ME1, much better in ME2 and 3. I think they are probably on par by the end, but Hale has always been fantastic.

Thank you.

I'm so goddamn sick of the Meer bashing. I admit it made me more hostile to FemShep than I began. I was originally meh on her but all the damn Meer bashing and Hale fangirling and well fanbacklash. Thankfully I'm going back into neutral territory.

Just a reminder to all, I did not say ManShep is better, But FemShep gets too much credit. Both are good VA's and both deserve reconigtion. Both worked hard to give us 3 great games, ending notwithstanding:-)

I personally enjoy male Shepard more than female. Nothing against Jennifer Hale, I think she's a fantastic voice actress, but like you said, sometimes she over does it. Paragon male Shepard is actually pretty believable in most cases.

I can't really bring myself to play a FemShep though. I don't know why, but I'm always instinctively picking PC's that share my RL gender. Unless I'm playing an MMO (or Gears of War 3), all of my characters are male.

True, but I personally think that's the point. It's a space opera, it's supposed to sound cheesy and hammy at times.

Nothing wrong with Male Shepard, though. I actually think Mark Meer is better as a renegade Shepard because of his more flat delivery. He makes renegade Shepard sound like a complete troll, which works really well. In comparison, Jennifer Hale is better in the role of a sincere paragon Shepard.

I started with femshep because I heard that the VA was better.  Hale was good but she also had some cringe-inducing lines.  I played manshep after that.  Meer's performance in ME1 was kinda flat but it was not bad.  I didn't understand why people were bashing Meer.

This.  For me, full renegade was more fun with manshep.  I was going for total jerkass and femshep just doesn't fit.

I find Meer to be pure gold if you're going for full renegade, especially in ME2. Hale makes a better Paragon by sounding really kind and warm. Though Meer is also a good Paragon, I found Hale to be a bit weak as a pure Renegade.

Jennifer Hale really *is* that good. Just ignore the morons that feel the need to prop her up at the expense of another talented voice actor (Mark Meer) and you'll get along just fine.

I like both. I do like femShep better, but mostly because I prefer to be a GIRL grizzled space marine. Nothing wrong with broShep.

And there's romancing Garrus.

I really do love both. I play an equal number of m!Sheps and f!Sheps in ME and ME2. I just naturally connect a bit more with f!Shep since I AM female. :)

Both suit different peoples needs and hopes.

Although I will add one con to ManShep.. it's the only con either of them have (that I notice)

Posted Image

Creepy/Rape face, even more disturbing when it's used on the "Virgin" in ME. Other then that... both are awesome.

Honestly it's not Femshep herself that is good, it's what she represents.Quite frankly Mass-Effect won't be remembered in the gaming community for it's story, or its gameplay, it will be remebered for Femshep.

The amount of female gamers has slowly been growing over the years, but only recently has it become more vocal because the internet has allowed them to come out of hiding. The fact that many companies now have to face, is that female gamers make up a much larger percentage of the market then they used too.

Japanese game companies have already realised this, and the west is yet to catch up.

Mshep will unfortunately fail to be remembered because there're  just too many characters like him.

It is not because one is better then the other, it's because she has become an icon to the female gaming community. (A consumer base that has been (stupidly) ignored for too long.)

E.A realised there is profit to be made from this market, thus Femshep trailer, statues, ect.

This is why your statement fails... Not everyone uses sheploo, in fact, most prefer using a customized shep with different pre-service and service history. Everyone roleplays their shep differently. No other character is like my maleshep. PERIOD.

I don't understand the difference...they're the same person who has the exact same dialogue and personality. The only difference I see is that there's different romance options.

OP was talking about the voice acting, not the character.

Well there are a few differences between playing a woman and playing a man. Nothing huge, but it was a nice touch. I usually play FemShep, but I gave ManShep a try and I loved it.

I dispute the fact that EA Games is learning anything. When they didn't advertise her, she was great. When they started focusing on her with ME3, she got the tart treatment (as did Ashley).
