Mshep will unfortunately fail to be remembered because there're just too many characters like him.
This is why your statement fails... Not everyone uses sheploo, in fact, most prefer using a customized shep with different pre-service and service history. Everyone roleplays their shep differently. No other character is like my maleshep. PERIOD.
Sigh, I know not everyone uses sheploo. But everyone should know by now a good amount of Shepard is pre-defined.
Your shepard is still a male, and a male being in the lead of the sci-fi genere is still generic.

Honestly it's not Femshep herself that is good, it's what she represents.Quite frankly Mass-Effect won't be remembered in the gaming community for it's story, or its gameplay, it will be remebered for Femshep.
The amount of female gamers has slowly been growing over the years, but only recently has it become more vocal because the internet has allowed them to come out of hiding. The fact that many companies now have to face, is that female gamers make up a much larger percentage of the market then they used too.
Japanese game companies have already realised this, and the west is yet to catch up.
Mshep will unfortunately fail to be remembered because there're just too many characters like him.
It is not because one is better then the other, it's because she has become an icon to the female gaming community. (A consumer base that has been (stupidly) ignored for too long.)
E.A realised there is profit to be made from this market, thus Femshep trailer, statues, ect.
I dispute the fact that EA Games is learning anything. When they didn't advertise her, she was great. When they started focusing on her with ME3, she got the tart treatment (as did Ashley).
That will always happen because sex sells. It's just a standard fact of marketing, and that fact will not change until society does. Femshep was not that 'tarted up' and neither was ashley.
