Liaramancers are definitely gonna hate this, but here we go.
Say in an alternate universe, ME3 was released and we all played through to the end. The game played out pretty much the same, up until you meet the Catalyst. But instead of seeing Star Brat, you see Liara.
"Now what kinda stupid riff raff explaination do you have for that, before I tear you a new a-hole OP?" Is what you're probably thinking.
The Prothean ruins that Liara was digging back in Mass Effect 1, housed the Catalyst, for whatever reason. Perhaps the Protheans somehow obtained the AI during their cycle, but could not control it so they kept it safe and hidden.
While Liara was digging she came across the device and begin studying it, while she continued her expedition. Soon Saren's Geth attack the facility and Liara is killed. The Catalyst, fully awakened due to Liara's tampering, is able to take control of Liara's body and uses it as a host. It is weak in this state and with no way out, it seals itself in that chamber that we saw her imprisoned in. The Catalyst becomes aware that an alliance team has infiltrated the ruins and sees it's opportunity to escape. It pretends it's trapped to enlist the aid of Shepard and his crew.
They all escape and upon hearing Shepard's debriefing of the mission, The Catalyst decides to go along with Shepard and his crew, curious to see how it all plays out. And then the events of the rest of the trilogy play out. The Catalyst over time gains better control of Liara's body, and is able to unlock it's potential. Hence explaining why Liara become so powerful during the gap between ME1 and ME2. It also explains her plot armor.
Eventually we get to the 3 choices and Liara reveals herself as The Catalyst. We don't truly know what it's motives were from the beginning, but it does explain what it is and that witnessing Shepard's actions throughout the trilogy has it convinced that organics are ready to make the change via Control, Synthesis or Destroy. The truth of the matter is, Shepard never knew the real Liara.
Now i'm sure you can question quite a few things about this, but say for the sake of argument, all of this had played out well, had little plot holes, and made sense. What would your reaction have been, had this happened?
