If I make a brute class(soldier) it will be male. This applies to fantasy games too. I see the females as being more frail and therefore resort to intelligence and mastering magic. It just doesn't seem realistic to me when a female is running around with a sword twice her size despite it being a fantasy game...

When I make a melee character in fantasy games, like a Warrior in Dragon Age, it's always male. In the Rogue's case, it can be either gender. Since the class doesn't seem to rely on brute strength but more on cunning, charisma and agility.

Swords are not that heavy. And the gigantic swords in some of these games would be no easier to wield by a man than a woman. One thing about female warriors is there is a tendency to depict them as frail twigs in most games instead of wiry or bulky. The only recent example I can think of where this was not the case is Diablo III's female barbarian.

Beyond that, there are women out there who can definitely beat the snot out of the average person--male or female. Considering fantasy protagonists are always exceptional individuals, I do not think a female warrior is really a stretch.

Exactly. That's another reason I just can't get behind females being brute classes for me in RPGs. They're always pretty, small and never have that amazon look. Devs should realize you can still make pretty female warriors that are muscular. They don't have be be massive like the female Barb in Diablo 3. Hawke in DA2 looks like she couldn't lift my cat...so I make her stick to swinging fireballs instead. I'd like to think in fantasy worlds, even they have some laws of physics...:D

As far as swords and shields...I'd be surprised to see a "great sword" over ten pounds. A heavy shield isn't too typical, either, for soldiers who are going to have to march carrying this equipment. More likely to get wood and hide than steel.

Those formations where you're supposed to use your shield to protect the men on either side are a special case.

Really, that knight in armor isn't carrying more than fifty or sixty pounds worth of equipment, to avoid killing his horse.

i wonder if the fact that most females in games are portrayed as less durable, this factors greatly into how much sympathy players feel for them. Ie. Aerith in FF7 being a healer/support class not a fighter.
If your initial female companion in Skyrim died in a scripted tragic way, would it tug on as many heartstrings, since she was more combat-oriented than healing or magic?

Female, because girls are awesome?

Also the fact that FemShep is just plain epic.

I don't really care whether my characters are female or male, and I just play whichever I feel like at the time. Because appearance factors usually are -not- equal, I tend to end up with more male characters than female - if the female characters end up looking too frail or otherwise annoying to me, I grit my teeth about it and make a male character even if I'd been originally intending to make a female character. If all factors were equal, I expect I'd have very close to fifty percent of each.

Indeed. The sizes and weights of weapons is very off in many games. Three and a half to four pounds is more typical for a "greatsword". I'd be surprised to see one heavier than five pounds. Of course, I'd also be surprised to find one taller than the person wielding it...

I only play as a female character when I'm playing as a character so mean that I can't stand to think of it as my self.

I really don't care whether my PC is male or female. To be honest I find the mindset of not playing a game because of the protaganist's genitalia to be quite childish really.

personally i always opt for female, even in 1st person shooters like halo or rainbow six... i think part of the reason in 1st person shooters is to intimidate enemies, making them know they were killed by a female character seems to have an impact... in 3rd person games I play female because it is more pleasing to the eye. Immature? sure, being honest though.

Oh and if you havent yet, play Mass effect trilogy as female and experience the greatness that is Jennifer Hale's voice acting, puts the male shepard to SHAME, 100% straight up superior in every way. She even sounds more believably authoritative and dangerous

Both, in the case of ME, Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale feel like completely different characters to me, and I feel you're missing some of the experience if you play only one.

I agree as to the "feel", but I disagree with the stance that BW has taken (lately?) that dialogue/gameplay should be gender neutral.  (some developer said that on here some time ago).  I vaguely recall KOTOR having a decent amount  of distinct dialogue depending on protagonist gender. In my opinion that is (1) natural & (2) adds to replayability.  I recall ME3 having a few refreshing comments differences.

But to OP, I generally err to female.

I don't NOT play a game because the option for gender isn't there. I like the option sometimes, particularly in a roleplaying game.

Both but male first usually. Normally this is because I play a warrior class first in RPG's, a class which I associate with males. Most of my rogues and mages are female.

My youngest stepbrother is sexist as hell when it comes to games. He REFUSES to play games with female leads unless its Lara Croft or Samus from Metroid.

[sarcasm]I couldn't possibly imagine why.[/sarcasm]

It's because they're both very deep characters who raise many philsophical and social conundrums. Duh.

If I have the time and the inclination I'll always do both. Because I was such a fan of Mass Effect and Dragon Age I played both a Male and Female.

I prefer Male though and always pick that gender first.

Bah. [Citation Needed] if you're going to make a comment like that, but I agree. I understand why they do it, though. Every difference based on gender will then need to be met with equal content for the other side, otherwise the fans will complain that one side was treated better than the other. I believe they already do this based on simply who you romance, nevermind looking at gender.

That must be it. I thought it was because he constantly and consistently objectifies women. /I shouldn't laugh but loool

Oh well. I think female leads kick ass so I'll play as them a bunch.
