As a guy, I tend to play female charactors more for the looks (okay, ladies bash me however you like).
That said, as a lover of female frontline buttkickers, I want them dressed right for the role. That means no skimpy armor for them (form-hugging, yes; cleavage & midiff baring, FLAT NO). I play them as female fighters, not airheads or strippers.
Female or Male character?

Female but I don't mind playing a male character.

Depends. In a game that I can customize my own character I think I've always chosen male except for the one femshep I never play as. But if the game has set characters you can choose from I tend to be more diverse. Like in FFXIII I only ever have Lightning as party lead and in XIII-2 I play as Serah. Cause in those instances it's just the characters I prefer, but if I can make my own I usu choose male cause I am one.

I haven't played a male character when I've had the choice since Knights of the Old Republic.

Pretty much this for me.
Although in games like Skyrim I find a male Nord is the only thing that works.

One thing I just thought of (again), anybody else bothered in the first Mass Effect that a guy Shepard could have all those gnarly scars but FemShep couldn't?SinnSly wrote...
Female, because girls are awesome?
Also the fact that FemShep is just plain epic.
The one where it looks like they sewed half your face back on particularly.

Back in ME1 when I created a few FemShep side characters(that I never got very far with), my favorite scar was the one over the left eyebrow, slashing it.
Reminds me of my eyebrow scar that forced a cowlick on the side nearest the center of my face.
Good stuff.

Female when I can, male when I have to.

It depends on the game I guess. I always play female Wardens and male Hawkes for some reason. I tend to play female Shepard more, but that's mainly because of the voice actress.

Both, I feel like I miss out in RPGs or games like Saints Row where I can create a character if I don't have multiple characters.
Same here, especially if the game has high replay value. I like to try all the different races as well as male and female characters.

Hermaphrodite.

I can go either way. I just wish games with character creation had more impact on what gender you chose. ME was going in the right direction with the voice acting but fell flat with the shared animations.

Female, because I am a female.

I have no problems playing as male, but if there's a choice I usually play as female.

Don't care. The gender I end up picking depends on the game though. Most of the time I end up playing through the game with both genders anyway.

I play both but if i have a choice then it depends on the game, i prefer male for ME3 but also play female as i get different meanings to some parts of the game.

Usually female. Except for dwarves, dwarves needs epic beards.

If I have the choice I usually stick with Female(I am male). I don't know why but I just generally find them more appealing especially if they're written and designed right.
But I also play males as secondary characters.

Both; primarily male first. In the case of numerous playthroughs (eg; NWN1, DAO, Skyrim), the majority are also male.

Both. It really depends on which character models I prefer in that game and what sort of character I feel like playing as at the time.
I try to avoid that personally, for example in Skyrim I went for a female Nord warrior first, then a male Breton archer-mage. I think mixing up character gender, race and class as I play new games is part of keeping the role playing experience fresh.

Both but male first usually.
Normally this is because I play a warrior class first in RPG's, a class
which I associate with males. Most of my rogues and mages are
female.

Male character. There are only few female characters I enjoyed playing.

Depends on the game. For D&D type or similar games, I always go with female neutral good elf ranger if I could. For ME, my main is female but I also play male. For others, I don't care or I do both.

Depends on the game. Surprisingly often the male characters look plain goofy and annoying, and I pick a female character. But generally I base it on how good the character looks for the role (and how goofy it is, less is more!), and on how good the voice acting is.
I don't really care about what people think I should pick based on my own gender. There really are bigger concerns in life!

Usually I play females (though still today we are infrequently given the choice) for just about everything. I find myself making a male character whenever I feel like goofing off. For instance, my DA2 male looked like a cross between Friar Tuck and and an old nobleman and was the grumpiest leering old man you'd ever seen lol.
Still, in some series if I had the opportunity I think I would leave things as they are. For example, I'm not sure I could ever play a Zelda game without Link as my protagonist. Some characters out there are rightfully set in stone.
