Playing a female in a game with romance isn't awkward for me as I naturally have her be a bisexual/homosexual.

Works for me, at least. I had no problem romancing Alistair or Zevran with my female Warden in DAO, for example.

Definitely enjoyed the Morrigan and Leliana romances more though. Obviously.

I Mix it up.

My canon is usually male, though.

I have played as both, but I much prefer playing as a Female. I have a much closer connection to my character that way.

Usually female. Depends on the game and my mood, though.

Usually female, oddly - I'm male in RL. I guess a psychologist would have to say a few things about that. I just prefer to project myself into fictional worlds as a woman.

ME was different because of Miranda. Before Miranda, I had four femSheps and one maleShep. Now they're equal in number.

female if available, but if content for gender varies in any way (including voice acting and/or class selection) I'll play a male at least once.
in games where both genders get the same class selection and there's not difference in story progression (whether its tied to gender or not) i will always play a female. for instance, all my WoW characters were female, while in SWTOR I had both genders due to both differences in npc interactions and LI options. in Dragon Age 2, I have one male Hawke, mainly because of the voice.
in Mass Effect, I used to have about equal number of Shepards of either gender, but in ME3, male shepards were cut down to 2 - simply not enough variation to the story, to play my ME2 LI designated Shepards, just for couple of extra sentences, I already saw on youtube.

Female.

Get bored with male characters quickly for some reason.

Female, because I am one. I don't particularly get mad about having to play as a guy though.

All things being non-equal, I'll pick whichever class has the stats and abilities I want, regardless of their appearance. This often leaves me nerdily playing games with my husband where I'm a beefy male warrior and he's a sexy lady archer.

It depends on setting, story and etc. Mostly i've gone with female characters lately, it's gotten boring with male characters. I get to play them all the time otherwise so might just aswell play as a female character when i have a choice. Diversity is one awesome thing <3

Both, but when the option is there, I'll always play female first, and save a male character for a later playthrough. Only when things change roleplaying-wise when switching gender. In Skyrim all my characters are female, because gender really doesn't matter for anything.

Female, almost always. Something about a powerful, dangerous woman is just incredibly attractive, Mass Effect totally cemented that idea. Jennifer Hale's awesome voice acting didn't hurt either.

It depends on the setting and the kind of character I want to make but I play both, about as much a female as a male character. I can connect to a female character just as well as a male one

I don't mind playing as a male character, but if given a choice I normally choose to play as a female character.

In NWN I played a male dwarf because they are hilarious. I gave him the minimum possible points for charisma and I had a lot of fun bludgeoning my way through. Then with hordes of the underdark I tried a blackguard build from the old Bioware forums and that was my first run with a female protagonist. From then onwards I have tended to prefer women, but I played a bit with a dudeHawke too.

If there is an option to choose, I generally like to play at least one of each gender, and more if the game is fun. With ME and DA2, I played both. I usually play a female in my first playthrough, since I'm a gal. In ME multiplayer, I only play the human females if I'm going to play a human.

If I have the choice I usually stick with Female(I am male). I don't know why but I just generally find them more appealing especially if they're written and designed right. But I also play males as secondary characters.

I find myself mostly playing women in more recent RPGs, as I can't get the right look for the kind of male I want to play. It seems that a lot more effort goes into modeling the women than the men.(Mass Effect's male/female Shepard is one of the exceptions, where I think the in-game model is terrible) Although I find the (usually)skinny female models very annoying. Strong women need some meat on their bones.

In less recent RPGs(generally those that came out 6+ years ago) I tend to play an even split of male and female. Maybe biased towards male, as I usually play male first and don't replay all RPGs.

I think I like wispy and skinny girls but I use to like muscular girls. Now I think it's a little too bulky.

I actually prefer the thinner and geek looking guys better than the muscular ones.  Unfortunately, the gaming developers are hell-bent on not making them so for the most part I'm out of luck >_>
