And one from BG2:
I think this is the route Bioware was trying to go with DA2 but the elves turned out weird looking...well at least most of them. Merill and Fenris looked good.

Overlord Series...

--------------------------------------------
+++++
--------------------------------------------
The elves from Warhammer and Neverwinter Nights do NOT match the typical Tolkien elf. I wouldn't exactly call some of those elves divine in their beauty but they don't look ugly either. They look believable and easy on the eyes. The Warhammer elves have thin facial structure and their features are sort of eastern in appearance but they have golden long hair. The Neverwinter Nights elves (Forgotten Realms) all look different due to the different races of elves but again none of them fit the Tolkien standard and one even has an animal like nose and is more similar in appearance to the Na'vi from Avatar. Meanwhile we have some elves who have cat-like eyes.
Dragon Age 2 elves look more like the Overlord 2 elves and the funny thing is, is that Overlord 2 was PARODYING the typical elf design. Throughout the entire series, elves are mocked along with other fantasy cliches such as dwarves who are depicted as being drunken miners who have access to bombs and other explosive stuff.
Conclusion:
DA2 elf:
Overlord 2 elf (game taking the **** out of the typical elf design):

Yeah. The elves of Dragon Age 2 aren't really that unique...
Another game (I believe it's an MMO) with elves that look DA2 styled.
Well at least Overlord 2 and the MMO game above give the elves better faces...
You can clearly see which are the unique looking elves and which aren't. It's not the DA2 elves that's for sure. They're just uglier versions of already set stereotype typical elves found in games that aren't inspired by Tolkien elves. These games and universes have deliberately gone out of their way to distort elves. The results as you've witnesses weren't exactly good.
Meanwhile the games and universes which were inspired by Tolkien's elves (or simply didn't deliberately go out of their way to distort elves) have elves that don't look Tolkien like at all but rather unique and pretty well designed.
I mean where has this craze come from about wanting to distort the elves and make them look less Tolkien like as possible? Tolkien made the elves we see today (the elves before LOTR were faeries) so either use them as they should be used or give them another name and don't associate them with elves. Yet having said that, you can make elves non-tolkien like and have them unique and well designed but please remember, that the pointy ears still came from Tolkien elves if memory serves me correct and therefore DA2 elves are still losely inspired by Tolkien elves however you look at it.
If we go by Bioware's logic then shouldn't humans be getting a redesign too?
