Bioware wanted elves to look unique rather than like smaller humans with pointed ears but then they produced those weird ugly looking elves. I would prefer if elves in DA3 looked more like the elves from the Forgotten Realms. Look at Neverwinter Nights for example, elves are smaller than humans, skinnier and their facial features are more exotic. Here are some elf portraits from NWN:

And one from BG2:

I think this is the route Bioware was trying to go with DA2 but the elves turned out weird looking...well at least most of them. Merill and Fenris looked good.

The elves from Warhammer and Neverwinter Nights do NOT match the typical Tolkien elf. I wouldn't exactly call some of those elves divine in their beauty but they don't look ugly either. They look believable and easy on the eyes. The Warhammer elves have thin facial structure and their features are sort of eastern in appearance but they have golden long hair. The Neverwinter Nights elves (Forgotten Realms) all look different due to the different races of elves but again none of them fit the Tolkien standard and one even has an animal like nose and is more similar in appearance to the Na'vi from Avatar. Meanwhile we have some elves who have cat-like eyes.

Dragon Age 2 elves look more like the Overlord 2 elves and the funny thing is, is that Overlord 2 was PARODYING the typical elf design. Throughout the entire series, elves are mocked along with other fantasy cliches such as dwarves who are depicted as being drunken miners who have access to bombs and other explosive stuff.

Conclusion:

Overlord 2 elf (game taking the **** out of the typical elf design):

Yeah. The elves of Dragon Age 2 aren't really that unique...

Image IPB

Another game (I believe it's an MMO) with elves that look DA2 styled.

Well at least Overlord 2 and the MMO game above give the elves better faces...

You can clearly see which are the unique looking elves and which aren't. It's not the DA2 elves that's for sure. They're just uglier versions of already set stereotype typical elves found in games that aren't inspired by Tolkien elves. These games and universes have deliberately gone out of their way to distort elves. The results as you've witnesses weren't exactly good.

Meanwhile the games and universes which were inspired by Tolkien's elves (or simply didn't deliberately go out of their way to distort elves) have elves that don't look Tolkien like at all but rather unique and pretty well designed.

I mean where has this craze come from about wanting to distort the elves and make them look less Tolkien like as possible? Tolkien made the elves we see today (the elves before LOTR were faeries) so either use them as they should be used or give them another name and don't associate them with elves. Yet having said that, you can make elves non-tolkien like and have them unique and well designed but please remember, that the pointy ears still came from Tolkien elves if memory serves me correct and therefore DA2 elves are still losely inspired by Tolkien elves however you look at it.

If we go by Bioware's logic then shouldn't humans be getting a redesign too?

I actually liked just having elves being small, lithe humans with pointy ears.

I guess I'm just weird.

Elves should look exactly as they really appear. Bioware should start using live models for their humans, elves and dwarves instead of artist depictions.

I agree, though some elves did look good with the new design. But when I saw Zevran I was like "What have they done to you!".But I doubt they'll go back to being little humans with pointy ears...I heard they are using the Frostbite engine for the next game,if true hopefully that will help the new elf look.

Forgotten Realms elves are as tall as humans with human-like visages. NWN actually got that aspect wrong. So did NWN2, as was eventually acknowledged by Obsidian staff. They wanted to go back and correct it; but the game was too far along in development by then to make that a realistic option.

What you are basically asking for is taller DAO elves. :pinched:

... But I LIKE elves looking like smaller humans with pointed ears! D:

However, on some level I do agree. If the devs feel they HAVE to change elves from the DAO designs, I'd rather they go back and draw inspiration from their earlier games (BG and NWN) than try to come up with some weird alien deer people. (Just because they look "unique" doesn't mean they look good, BioWare!)

Since part of the art revamp DA2 went through was specifically to try to distance the Dragon Age setting from straight tolkienian fantasy, I doubt they'd do that kind of makeover.
Though one wonders why, if they wanted to stray away from generic tolkienian fantasy, they went for high magic, medieval stasis, elves and dorfs in the first place.

I can only agree with all of this.

My only wish is that they dont force the poor characters into that clown makeup this time around. ;)

Yeah, I like the images OP. That's kind of how I designed my elves in DA:O. The elves in DA2 don't look like elves, they look like Halla, and that's bad. Elves are supposed to be the more lithe, agile of the races, more predatory in appearance and otherwise very human-like (seen as popularly beautiful and desirable, even as humans abuse them). The elves in DA2 look like prey species, clumsy, big headed for their bodies, weaker limbed, without true stereoscopic vision, what with their eyes being pulled to the side and their nose being pulled forward.

Elves are predators, not prey. I vote they redesign them again. They don't have to look just like humans, but I really, really hope they don't look like DA2.

The guy on the right there reminds me of a Japanese Samurai painting...

I'd go with something like Iorveth, the elves in DA2 looked very off.

Me too but I think BW made it clear that they aren't going back to that design. True BW can make the elves and humans look like what they want but when you get guys looking like the guys below then you really have to question BW...

I love my DA:O elves. They so cute and small, but yet fierce and ofc very good warriors/hunters. So we get the cuteness/pretty factor along with the bad ass factor, which is what an elf should be.

Now I love Fenris; he's very cute, BUT -- the DA2 elves are just bizarre, with their huge bulbous heads, extra long necks, and ultra petite frames (Merrill's arms make me uncomfortable).

Good effort but something just went wrong.

I do NOT want ultra masculine square-jawed hairy-faced elves.

They may be the ones designing them, but we're the ones staring at them for 40+ hours, and paying for it too.

If Bioware is comfortable asking us to buy a game full of hideous elves that they know many of us are going to hate, then we feel comfortable asking them to please make the said elves more pleasing to look at. (True, they don't have to listen and we don't have to buy their next game, but we want to like it so we figure it doesn't hurt to at least ask.)

I hate when elves are basically humans with pointy ears.
The only elves I like are the kind in folklore. The Fey creatures that lived in the woods and under hills and kidnap people.

Indeed. Norse elves and various fairy folk from other lands shall always reign supreme IMO. A shame they never get their due in fantasy games. Instead we always end up with the bland as rocks Tolkien inspired variety.
