Seriously Bioware, you can do better than this...

The hand is a design issue, but Merrill's posture is purely an animation issue -- of which the DA series has had happen a lot (Morrigan, Merrill, some Fenris scenes, etc).

Merril uses the same body model as the keeper. It's S shaped pretzel...oh and >sig

Make em all halla heads or don't...make up your mind is all I ask.

Faerunner your welcome ^_^ I'll add a link to the photos.

I think the elves look as if they tried to regain their immortality back by opening the doors between life and death and it back fired on them.
Lord Cob tried to do that and look what happened to him O.o

Posted Image

Lord Cob was an exiled wizard who used forbidden magic in order to extend his own life, fearing the imminent fate of death all mortals possessed. In his quest to gain immortality, he manipulates the protagonists to discover the secret of eternal life, uncaring to what happens to those around him.

Faerunner got some pics for you ^_^ there Noldor Elves.

This is the Feanor's family, he is High King Of The Noldor, he married Nerdanel (she's the the beautiful red haired elf in the pic) they had seven sons. Their family history is really tragic, Feanor's father was murdered by the Dark Lord Morgoth and so he swore an oath to get back what was stolen from him and made all the Noldor including his sons to join him. This lead to a curse on their family

Posted Image

Nerdanel; refusing to join her husband in revolt, she herself avoided the Doom of Mandos but her sons did not. The last remnant of her family survived through her grandson Celebrimbor, the forger of the three Elven Rings of Power. But sadly he was tortured to death by Sauron after he rebelled against him, being tricked by his One Ring.

I THINK I'M GOING TO CRY: Its so sad :crying: what happens to these poor elves, people say all elves are arrogant and perfect with knife ears, but this shows that they are victims in life too and they are not perfect, they just try and make good in the life they have. OMG I wish I was an elf, beats being Human.
<3This photo is so sweet, ELVEN LOVE <3

Overlord Series...

--------------------------------------------

+++++

--------------------------------------------

The elves from Warhammer and Neverwinter Nights do NOT match the typical Tolkien elf. I wouldn't exactly call some of those elves divine in their beauty but they don't look ugly either. They look believable and easy on the eyes. The Warhammer elves have thin facial structure and their features are sort of eastern in appearance but they have golden long hair. The Neverwinter Nights elves (Forgotten Realms) all look different due to the different races of elves but again none of them fit the Tolkien standard and one even has an animal like nose and is more similar in appearance to the Na'vi from Avatar. Meanwhile we have some elves who have cat-like eyes.

Dragon Age 2 elves look more like the Overlord 2 elves and the funny thing is, is that Overlord 2 was PARODYING the typical elf design. Throughout the entire series, elves are mocked along with other fantasy cliches such as dwarves who are depicted as being drunken miners who have access to bombs and other explosive stuff.

Conclusion:

DA2 elf:

Overlord 2 elf (game taking the **** out of the typical elf design):

Posted Image

Yeah. The elves of Dragon Age 2 aren't really that unique...

Posted Image

Another game (I believe it's an MMO) with elves that look DA2 styled.

Well at least Overlord 2 and the MMO game above give the elves better faces...

You can clearly see which are the unique looking elves and which aren't. It's not the DA2 elves that's for sure. They're just uglier versions of already set stereotype typical elves found in games that aren't inspired by Tolkien elves. These games and universes have deliberately gone out of their way to distort elves. The results as you've witnesses weren't exactly good.

Meanwhile the games and universes which were inspired by Tolkien's elves (or simply didn't deliberately go out of their way to distort elves) have elves that don't look Tolkien like at all but rather unique and pretty well designed.

I mean where has this craze come from about wanting to distort the elves and make them look less Tolkien like as possible? Tolkien made the elves we see today (the elves before LOTR were faeries) so either use them as they should be used or give them another name and don't associate them with elves. Yet having said that, you can make elves non-tolkien like and have them unique and well designed but please remember, that the pointy ears still came from Tolkien elves if memory serves me correct and therefore DA2 elves are still losely inspired by Tolkien elves however you look at it.

If we go by Bioware's logic then shouldn't humans be getting a redesign too?

According to lore, elves are supposed to be alien to us humans so we'd tend to feel uncomfortable looking at them. However, there is alien-beautiful and alien-bizarre, and I think Bioware went way too far toward the latter with DA2's elves. The first time I saw one I was immediately reminded of alleged UFO alien photos from Area 51.

To illustrate alien-beauty: in Baldur's Gate 1, the human artist Prism was haunted by the beauty of Ellisime, an elf he'd seen only once, yet instantly fell in love with such that he worked himself to death carving her likeness into rock.

What codex says this?

Elves are often, in real world myths, supernatural. In D&D they are descended from a god so some measure of divinity (supernatural) is implied. Prism's reaction as described in Baldur's Gate is a fascination common to human interaction with supernatural phenomena. LotR's elves were a touch supernatural as well as the place they lived.

It's still an animation issue, as Marethari's posture is fine IIRC in every scene and every depiction as an NPC except for her Night Terrors entrance.

It is an animation issue. If you look at her body in-game and outside of that particular cutscene, then you'll see that her posture is fine.

More importantly, that her spine is correct and not disturbing.

If they are going to put the dragon age 2 designs in it has to be redesigned. I'm talking about the eyes and better hair styles and facial features. Some of you guys were complaining about not wanting a small human with pointy ears, so now we have a small alien that is disfigured, its got nothing to do with animations. They would still look ugly if they were completed, just less ugly.

To avoid comparing apples to oranges, let's look at three elves who actually transitioned from one game to the next...

I'll let you decide if it was a good move, a bad move, or a lateral move.

You can't really compare them, they are better because of the graphics. But if they really all looked like this I would be fine, but they don't. Also making them skinny and having long necks is stupid. Merril's eyes are also too big.

I know its not relevant but I can't help it, these comics are hilarious! Some elf dude saves Teyn, but he's angry that he removed his clothes, lol sounds like fenris.....

The Forgotten Realms had it right, only half-elves were as tall as humans. The elves didn't look the way they should in DA:O either... but the way they look in DA2 is just messed up. Sure a few of them don't have that creepy, mutated, ugly weird look but I can tell you that if I lived in Kirkwall I would keep far away from the alienage simply out of fear that they had some sort of disease that caused their appearance to become so *shudder*.

I think that Tallis is atleast almost an okay design for an elf... even though it is far from Jaheira.

Comparing apples and oranges indeed; Keeper Marethari isn't even the same character. (Different facial structure, different tattoo design, different hair, different colouring, different voice, different personality... she's a completely different character in all but name.)  Zevran looks absolutely atrocious, and Merrill is a completely different character too. (They let her keep her hair style and a variant of her tattoo design, but that's it.)

Plus, once again, I just don't think the designs look good. Marethari looks like an embodiment of Hera's sacred animal to me, Zevran looks absolutely hideous (and I know there's a lot of internet backdraft that agrees) and Merrill looks halfway decent despite the new design, not because of it. (Let's face it: if she had smaller eyes, a nasal bridge, and ears that pointed up instead of partially sideways like a bendy-straw, do you honestly think she'd look worse instead of better?)

As the OP said, there are ways of making the elves look "more distinct" besides using the DA2 design.

Bear in mind that some of that is also engine changes. There was no redesign of humans, but Alistair is only barely recognizable as the same character. It's not entirely the redesign, but the new engine as well.

And yet Leliana and Cullen manage to look exactly the same, if not slightly better, than their DA:O counterparts.

Do you know how the Orcs first came into being? They were elves once, the finest of the lesser beings. Immortal, graceful, beautiful, timeless, wise… the most magnificent creation of Iluvatar.

Posted Image
Posted Image

But the forces of evil corrupted them AKA BioWare/EA; they became ugly, vengeful; filled with malice and hate and destructive passion. What infernal wickedness to so deface perfection!
taken by the BioWare and EA, tortured and mutilated. A ruined and terrible form of life!

LoL BioWare can't fool us.... Fae do you think BioWare is reading these forums? I wanted to post something on the idea page for Dragon Age 3, but I was too late... (sigh) Only two people said let us play elves and dwarves again, but I don't think BioWare got the message... All he said was "Oh you want more customisation?" No you idiot I want my elves without your ET models...
