Or, you know, they could just look like the damn elves from DA:O. Tolkien-esque elves work for explicitly high fantasy settings such as Forgotten Realms or Tamriel, not so much for the more grounded "middle fantasy" Dragon Age tends to be.

Tolkien didn't help do the design for tamerial elves. Bethesda did their own design a long time ago and then decided to make their faces like that image above^ and BioWare is now copying them. Yeah very unique BioWare... Just copy Bethesda.... They deviantly know what they are doing in the elven design exam..... (rolleyes) Good Lord....

A Cure for Elven Goat disease.DescriptionReports of a strange, terrible disease that has been effecting the elven population of the Free Marches are true! These once beautiful creatures have contacted a rare disease (Goat disease or GD) whose side effects are, anorexia, disformed cheeks and jaws, large inflammatory of the ears causing drooping, and a large inflammatory of upper bridge of the nose continuing up to the forehead. Please, help us find a cure before this disease spreads to the rest of Thedas!
Looks to me like your avatar has the same symptoms..... :alien: LOL

I'am so going to inform the others! Better read the rule book; Steps for evaluating an Infection Control Breach, Oh! Intresting....

"Heaven shall burn the disease" - lets all sing the Lyrics LOL

This is a nice design for an elf. I would change the ears and shorter neck and add more meat on her check bone, but apart from that it's really good. No we don't want slanty eyes and weird long faces for elves or any race.... Its just plain wrong and you know who you are you sick people!

Do you think BioWare will take till 2014 to make Dragon Age 3? Well if they improve it like the leap from Oblivion to Skyrim, then it's worth it.

Hopefully they will take notes from Bethesda... that is, looking at the modding community at what people were unhappy with and changed, and is currently the most popular (though they did at least learn that most people didn't like the gender-resstricted romances)

As opposed to completely ignoring everything that has been done before. Sorry for going slightly off-topic.

You gotta admit that Tallis's design is a step in the right direction.

Elves can look freaky and attractive at once. Just check out Skyrim's Elves. Be they Altmer, Bosmer, or Dunmer, they're all alien and run the gauntlet from groteqsue to unearthly.

I like DA2's Elves. I like their flawed, diverse, and fallen state. I don't want Quendi-clones of extreme beauty and unnatural power. I want the underdogs as Bioware intended. Look at their concept art for DA2, the Elves are perfect. Why that didn't transition to the game, I don't know.

Is that because Tallis looks like Felica Day beaten with an ugly stick?

I hope they don't take notes on the race models for the elves in Skyrim, that would be bad. Yeah I hope your right, because i'm sure alot of people changed their elves in Skyrim. I couldn't because I bought the console version, but maybe I will buy it on pc to check out the mods.

BioWare or should I say EAWare can do whatever they like, everyone is just going to say BioWare your elves are corpses. Then somebody will release a Mod called "Epic Elves" or "Real Elves" mod turning all npcs into the divine fair race they should be.

Hey, i'm not saying the design is good looking.<_< Imo compared to all the other elves who's faces look like Easter Island heads, Tallis's has a less exaggerated nose bridge, cheek bones, making hers look less alien. Sadly, seeing as the devs are steadfast on keeping this art style/engine, anything that's an improvement regardless on how drastic it is in terms gameplay, character design is welcomed by me.

I have read through all eighteen pages of this thread because the appalling appearance of DA2 elves was one the reasons why I found that game so disappointing. Mods helped - I had forgotten how ugly they were originally because I modded our the original design as soon as options became available.

One of the recurring arguments that I have been reading is that beauty is subjective and just because some of find the new design to be repugnant, that it is all just a personal opinion.

However, beauty is not subjective - it has been verified that beauty is associated with a certain symmetry of features and certain proportions. This symmetry is cross-cultural and even takes into consideration "racially" distinct features.

Regardless of what some proponents of the elf retcon insist, DA lore has always maintained that humans find elves beautiful. But the proportions on the redesign do not fit the objective standards of what humans find beautiful. For the most part, they are objectively ugly (Merrill excluded - and even there, the voice actress talent I think compensates for her appearance).

I can understand that maybe someone at Bioware wanted to make his/her mark on the sequel and give it a distinctive look but time and budget constraints kept them from fulfilling their vision - but please, remember the Hippocratic oath - "First do no harm,,,"

If they do not change the elves into something more appealing in the next installment, I think for the first time, I will just not buy one of their games. DA2 was a disappointment - ME3's ending was a disaster. That means in my book they already have two strikes...

Here's to the vain hope that someone, somewhere, up there in Edmonton reads these forums and makes the right decision...

I think so as well. While I'm not a fan of Tallis, her design is better than the regular DA2 elves. I hope Bioware keeps working on this.

I would love to see the artists post some concept art to show fans the potential changes in the design. Bioware could even hold a contest like they did with femShep, except maybe the fans choose the top 3 and then Bioware would narrow it down from there.

CaptainBlackGold couldn't agree more! When is a Dev going to appear on this forum and tell us they will consider it? Do we need to post until we reach 100 pages for someone at Bioware to reply on this major discussion? They are too busy talking about customisation options, yet they can't even say "oh sorry we will allow you to play as a dwarf and elf again and we will consider making them as they were before we mutilated them."

No your right Bioware you should continue to think about french locations even though the races for your world looks repulsive! And then there is the generic option of playing a boring human! Yeah thanks Bioware really unique! Its a roleplaying game without any option to play a fantasy race! WOW it's like playing Star Wars Galaxies Online and not being able to play Jedi and Sith..... Yeah Bioware really original and unique! Cough... Not!

Your Dragon Age 2 is a bloody mockery and disgrace to the Fantasy and Role Playing genre! And you better fix it or you and your franchise are heading for extinction! And when that happens EA will replace you with another dumb company who likes to be dominated into submission!

I'm sorry I had to say it.... It was bottling inside me and I had to let it all out...

Also is it me or does every fantasy game EA games touches it dies during only one year of life? Lord Of The Rings pops in my mind and they ruined every game they made. The only game that was worth playing was Battle For Middle Earth and they ruined that after they took the servers down.

I really want to play as a decedant of a noble "elvhen" the ancient name of what the elves were called when they were immortal. And I think that would be possible, because i'm sure a royal family of the Elven Empire escaped and then they would drift into "centuries-long slumber". That would be a nice origin to play, because i'm really sick of only human nobles.

They would look like this (image below)

Noble Elvhen Race

Posted Image

"Immortal and ready to burn the human heretic scum and bring our elven people to it's former glory!" :o

Now that design is unique! I love the dress! she looks pretty and I would love this origin to pop in Dragon Age 3! I played the underdog already, I know that perceptive already! I want to look through the eyes of a noble elven family that has survied the persecution of the humans and now the last lineage to a once proud noble race! Like "Return Of The King" but better and more intresting to see a strong leader and future Empress/Emperor lead his people and give them their immortality back!

As far as I know, all of the elven cities where destroyed along with everything and everyone within them. Chances are, there are no Arlathan Elves anymore. Besides, that'll wreck the entire theme of Thedas' Elves. Personaly, I like playing an impoverished pauper in a ghetto, or a woodland dweller that's barely better than a bandit.

Remember the Holy Crusade? What was Holy about church tyrants? Their purpose was to claim land, take booty and exploit people whose culture differed from the people in western Europe. They also raped and murdered woman and children in their Gods name.

"Kill'em all, and let God sort'em out" is adopted by the Marines and the Green Berets.

"Burn the Heretics and blasphemers in the name of our Lord Christ!"

Sounds familar to what the humans did to the elves thousands of years ago in Dragon Age and other real myths.

The Crusades were politically motivated. The Seljuq empire was expanding its territory and attacking The Orthodox Church who requested aid from the Catholic Church which begun The First Crusade. Though there was terrible corruption in later crusades but all honorable and noble goals are eventually corrupted.

http://www.middle-ag...of-crusades.htm

Now as far as I know, elves before Tolkien invented the popular version of them never had the pointy ears found in some fantasy works today. I know some stories from centuries ago where elves were actually abducting children and were portrayed as being evil. The Norse had them down as being divine beings that man could become too. However as I mentioned beforehand you had other depictions of them too and faeries were one of them.

Maclimes wrote...

That's Tolkien's elves, not Thedas elves.

Tolkien's dwarves did not have females. Should Bioware have emulated Tolkien in that regard, as well?

No, these are all new elves. Not Tolkien, not D&D, not Keebler, but Dragon Age. And I have no problem with them having their own distinct look, background, and outlook from Tolkien elves.

Tolkien's dwarves did have females but they were just rare and view like in Dragon Age 2 where they are virtually non-existent (once again Bioware borrows from Tolkien).

-------

Back to the discussion of elves:

I don't want a semi-divine beautiful race. I want a race whose members can be fair or ugly just like with humans. Dragon Age 2 however only had 3 decent looking elves with every other elf looking as though they were deformed. No one wants that. Even the dwarves looked better than DA2 elves (and as far as I know, don't humans in DA consider most of them unattractive because MOST of them are unattractive?).

My point was that elves can be made to look unique without being made into ugly deformed and twisted creatures.

Same here. DA's elves were unique because of their culture, history and lore. They didn't need to be changed. There's no LOTR elves with tattoos as far as I recall whereas dalish elves in DA had tattoos and were more tribal than LOTR's elves. This set them apart for me. Further more while the appearance of DA elves was clearly inspired by LOTR elves it should be noted that DA elves had some differences such as having bigger and pointer ears, being smaller and also being more thinner.

There were also some deliberately ugly elves showing that elves in DA aren't some semi-divine race whose members are blessed with great beauty.

Now find me a Tolkien elf that looks like one of these two elves.

If Bioware really wanted to make a unique elf, they could have simply made the ears much much smaller and given them something distinctive like horns. Yeah I know the kossith have horns too but they don't have to be exclusive only to them and the elves could have had smaller horns.

Perhaps Bioware should look to real world mythology such as Greek Mythology for ideas of how to design something new. But I guess that's stealing too.

What was that quote? That all ideas are copied and simply built upon? I mean Tolkien's elves were based on the Norse elves and the orcs were based on other creatures from myth too. I'm sure the first people who came up with these creatures had something which inspired their creation.

I mean the extinct Elasmotherium was most likely the insprition for the unicorn which is why Marco Polo called one a unicorn.
