The elves in Dragon Age 2 had the same problem much of the game had, in my opinion, and that is that while the concept was good the execution was poor, probably due to time constraints.

A unique facial structure was a great idea, as was being more slender and in the concept art it looks good. The problem came with the execution.

You can see that the elf models that actually had time and effort spent making them, Fenris and Merrill's (well, their faces at least) look good. The problem is all the rushed background elves and elf NPC's who did not have enough time spent on them and ended up looking incredibly creepy and unnatural. Sure there are a few issues with Merrill's arms and neck but they were more to with questionable animation than her appearance. Other important elf NPC's like Orsino and the keeper also look a lot better than the other elves, because their importance story-wise meant that more time was spent on them.

I think that DA3's elves should use the same facial structure and concept that DA2's did, but that this time they should spend more time on the models to make them look right, like the better elves in DA2. Considering that they already have the concept and finished models there hopefully this will give them more time to spend perfecting them this time around, and with any luck that will increase their quality this time around.

Very well said – I think that the DA2 elf concept has potential, but it needs some work.

Can you tell the others that, because it's killing me that I can't respond back. I'm sorry I dragged the argument too far. I should have just sticked to the facial structure debate, thats what I mean't anyway.

I just wanted the faces to have a proper structure if they were going for the triangular face or a square face or whatever... you get what i'm saying right?

More than 600 replies and over 8000 views. I never expected this thread to go this far...

Well I guess only the future know what is in store for elves in the Dragon Age universe.

I'm hoping they look better in the next game. Something tells me that more work will be put onto them this time. Something also tells me that the elves might look better because of a new engine (if there is one) being used. Though I do have doubts too.

I don't see the elves going through a drastic change once again. We might unfortunately be stuck with DA2 elves.

I am sure a proper amount of time will be taken this time, if we're lucky a little of the same effort that went into the major elves of DA2 will go into the rest of them and then it'll be smooth sailing peoples.

I agree that it is unlikely we will see another drastic change - though one might hope otherwise. However I really do think Bioware heard what the critics were saying and I am confident that they will make adjustments, even if they never actually come right out and say, "Yeah, our elves in DA2 were ugly." These are some very talented folks.

Poor DA2 was a victim of a decision making process that wanted to make too many changes (that did not need to be made), with not enough time and too few resources to make those changes work. I think they will do better next time up to bat.

But I want to see a screenshot of the elves before I place my pre-order - just saying...

DA2 elves have grown on me over time. I don't dislike the redesign as I once did. Still not *my* ideal elf design, but it's not my creation. I do wish some of the radom ncps had better designs in DA2 however there are some humans that are just as bad imo (the group of 4, 2 hooded, that are standing in almost every other street corner all over Kirkwall).

Glancing at this cover for Tad Williams novel To Green Angel Tower - somewhat reminds me of DA2 elves, the slope or shape of the nose maybe? Anyways, even without seeing their ears you can tell they are not human - nose, cheeks, eyes and yet they are still beautiful (well I think so, it's very subjective)

Hopefully DA3 gets a nice long development time for refinement and polish.

It only makes sense to try to appeal to players when showing them something other than the normal option of "human" in a fantasy game. Make races distinctive but attractive in their statistical and physical attributes. There's nothing appealing about DA 2 elves to me, they look like fetal alcohol syndrome kids with pointy ears combined with malnutrition. Plus, most of the characters are just weak-willed, which is like doubling up on nails in the coffin for the entire race. At least the dwarves were somewhat represented in a positive light with Varric. The elves are just pathetic in DA 2, whereas they were kinda fun in DA:O because of their visual appeal, stories and personalities. You don't have to make them look like elves from the Forgotten Realms, just don't make them look deformed and all the elven NPCs seem mentally ill please.

They do look good but that's because of realistic facial proportions. In reality Dragon Age 2 elves don't need a massive redesign yet again. Bioware just needs to make their facial and body proportions realistic. However the elves still won't be unique. Certain species of the Forgotten Realm elves are unique. Dragon Age 2 elves aren't unique as I proved pages back (with other games having elves of a similar design with big floopy ears).

I was personally happy with the Origins elves and wouldn't have changed them. All this topic is about is about how Bioware could/can make the elves look unique without making them look like deformed mutants. Really this topic is a dream because changing the elves once again would just destroy what contiguous sequence is left. Rather I hope the body and facial proportions are fixed.

They can get rid of those floopy ears too and surely there are other races of elves? They could make each race of elves look different in terms of facial features just like how the Chinese, Africans and English all have different facial features. Therefore why must every elf have the same facial features? There's different races of humans in Thedas, why can't it be the same for elves?

It won't be lore breaking because we know there's different tribes of elves in Thedas with different ancestors. They're all called Dalish however but this doesn't have to mean they share the same ancestor who was a mutant deformed freak.

I agree, because elves struck me as more cartoony and "silly" looking in DA2, if not a little derpy. Female elves look fine, but the males seem.... strange. I would personally like the DA:O elves with the DA2 ears  ;)

I'm back to cause chaos! Nope just kidding :)

I think almost everyone agrees that the designs for the elves turned into a disaster. Any sensible designer would see that and scrap it and start a fresh, but I guess some people don't understand that no means no.

I just heard from a friend that SW TOR is going f2p sometime in november. I'm not touching that game even if it came with candy and flowers. I'll probably download it anyway, but I think i'll get Guild Wars 2 instead.

Anyway lets get back to the discussion, even though its been milked to death.... But fear not i'm a lvl 50 necromancer and i'll save this forum!

Also i'm wondering is there any forums about "cheesecake" armour on BSN?

Has anybody looked at the Guild Wars 2 elves?

I love how the artist says they didn't want a "painted human with pointy ears" and then goes on to say "theres never been a creature like this in the fantasy genre"

I don't want to sound like a classic elf **** but they look like a spriggan, but with leaf shaped elf ears. So they basically look like a "painted human spriggan with pointy ears" Hows that new in fantasy genre?

I would say that the Asura look unique, even though I imagined a tiny Ewok race with rocket launchers and golems a long time ago.... Sorry but I have seen it all...

PS at least they look 75% better than DA2 elves, i'll give them that.

Dammit... I guess this forum is dead. Well it was fun while it lasted, let me know when all the game developers are done mutilating mythology. I'm off to join the knight armour debate, see ya.

I tend to agree with Lord Athena.

Elves in most fantasy/RPG games really look like humans with just pointy ears. There is very little to distinguish the two to really make elves stand out. I like the attempt Bioware made in DA2 to try and make the elves more distinguished, but it was poorly executed. I can't say I have a image in my possession to help contribute. But if/when DA3 comes out it would be nice to see elves as well as other races be more distinguishable and unique then they were in the previous two installments.

Also reminds me of the character Spar from Breath of Fire. I think the artist should have gone for the original designs, with them having wooden parts (like antlers) forming around their body.

There not too bad, but I still like the traditional elves. I think there are better ways to reinvent an elf without drastically changing their appearance. But it's their fanatasy so if thats what they want fine by me, but I won't be roleplaying as one.

I don't mind them looking like humans with pointy ears, but I would like them to add something new to their image without them looking too alien.

If we look at other myth races like centaurs; they just look like humans that are part horse. I don't see anyone changing the way they look. It's good that they share human features with us, thats why we can relate to them.

Image IPB

So why do we need to change them so they look like ET and just for the shake of being different?
