The elves DA2 appearance discussion was so last week. Mages freedom, templar/Chantry abuse, and the dangers of blood magic and demonic possession are the new hot topics. Try posting in those threads.

Mages SUCK.

Hot sexy awesome Templars RULE!

So how about that Cassandra? I hope the devs make her live up to her name by emphasizing the dat @ss in Cassandra.

Seekers suck. Give me hot sexy awesome Templar women Bioware or I don't want any romance system appearing in the next DA game.

If we look at other myth races like centaurs; they just look like humans that are part horse. I don't see anyone changing the way they look. It's good that they share human features with us, thats why we can relate to them.

So why do we need to change them so they look like ET and just for the shake of being different?

Because distinctive.

let's not forget iconic.

I hate that word.... Iconic..... sounds like another word for BS to me.

I'm also getting a bad headache about what female knights should wear. So now they must wear male armour or they are stamped as unrealistic by blacksmiths? Not to mention if you draw any of your knights with thorn or needle shaped armour you are automatically called "the Sauron effect"?

Where is all this negative hate coming from? First elves, next dwarves, then armour and God knows what else! Maybe we should start blaming wizards for looking like the "Gandalf effect"

This sums up my feelings about Bioware's iconic theme. I can just imagine the horrors of what they are doing with Fenris.... Oh dear....

Ok maybe they won't go OTT! But still they are not doing a very good job of the elves at the moment. We just have to wait and see....

But seriously if BW did this to mages and wizards would you play them? Thats how I feel about the elves at the moment.

 Sadly no, I just modified them a little bit.

All the credit goes to this video:

That video makes me laugh so much, but when Bioware does something like this in reality its not so funny.

Yeah I watched it. I'm somewhat familiar with computer specs and all things releated to computers what with me doing a BTEC Level 3 course on IT at college. Feel free to PM me about the specs.

The elves in Dragon Age 2 had the same problem much of the game had, in my opinion, and that is that while the concept was good the execution was poor, probably due to time constraints.

A unique facial structure was a great idea, as was being more slender and in the concept art it looks good. The problem came with the execution.

You can see that the elf models that actually had time and effort spent making them, Fenris and Merrill's (well, their faces at least) look good. The problem is all the rushed background elves and elf NPC's who did not have enough time spent on them and ended up looking incredibly creepy and unnatural. Sure there are a few issues with Merrill's arms and neck but they were more to with questionable animation than her appearance. Other important elf NPC's like Orsino and the keeper also look a lot better than the other elves, because their importance story-wise meant that more time was spent on them.

I think that DA3's elves should use the same facial structure and concept that DA2's did, but that this time they should spend more time on the models to make them look right, like the better elves in DA2. Considering that they already have the concept and finsihed models there hopefully this will give them more time to spend perfecting them this time around, and with any luck that will increase their quality this time around.

Exactly my thoughts.

I didn't really care much about DA:O  elves. There was nothing exeptional about them, just humans with pointy ears.

One thing bugged me though. Now, DA:O elves were lithe, short(er), with pointy ears but overall humanlike features.... what if some of them were born taller and wore their hair long to cover their ears... wouldn't they pass as humans? And on the other hand, wouldn't shorter people, with tiny build be considered having elven blood and thus being inferior???

For this reason alone I like the DAII design, or rather the idea behind it. I support elves that are discernable from humans at first glance, even with their hair down...

Meh, just give them unique eyes, hair and skin and you will notice they are elves. They shouldn't look like a sub species of a troll. I'm just going to use the hellboy elves for my argument, if you cut their ears off would you have a hard time telling that they are elves or humans? No I think not....

When women wear armour with a helmet you can't tell their gender either, should we give them two round bulging parts on their armour? No we shouldn't! same goes for elves.

And I havn't heard anyone complaining about the dwarves, they are small and bulky humans. I have no hope for them... I know BW are going to ruin DA3 just like they did with their recent games.

In all, I really don’t care for the revamp of elves in Dragon Age II (though it's grown on me since DA2 was released, I suppose), and I’d be really worried to see what my Surana, Tabris, and Mahariel elves would look like with the new revamp… And quite honestly, if my Warden was to ever make a comeback without their face covered, I’d really hope that they would let me about to tweak her face in the game – like when you import saves, if it sees you have a DA:O/DA:A save, it would be “Would you like to tweak your warden’s face for this game?” it will let you do that. Wishful thinking, I suppose, but one can hope, right?

But back to the revamp… I’m pretty “meh” on it. I didn’t like it all that much at first, though it’s slowly started to grow on me. Though, the elves in DA2 have far too long of necks – they really should be shortened by uhm… a few in-game inches – and the ears are a bit, as people have said, droopy. Elves in DA2 are also far, far too thin, and I hated the whole “no shoe” things. That really bothered me. I can see maybe Merrill running around without shoes on, but Fenris, Athenril, and… well, really, any city elf?
It really doesn’t make sense.

I do like the eyes though; I know they’re pretty remnisint of the Na’vi eyes, but I really do like the irises. When you take some of the features of the DAII elves and put them onto the DA:O elves, they look great!

I’m new to the Bioware forums, so if this doesn’t post correctly, I apologize in advance… The following picture I’m going to post is NOT mine, however! You can find it on the following topic, though:

(tmp7704 posted it)

As far as elves in DA2 that I thought looked good, there is Merrill, Fenris, Cora (Prostitute in The Blooming Rose ahaha), Athenril, Marethari, Ilen and I thought Lia (the little girl you can save) was pretty adorable, if a bit on the plain side. As for a lot of “furniture/background elves” …Yes, I lot of them where just plain awful. x__x There was one elven woman walking around Kirkwall’s alienage, and I want to say that I thought she was quite lovely, but she’s probably one of the few “elven fodder” that didn’t look like some weird alien/orc hybrid.

As far as Orana is concerned, I feel bad for her. :c Poor girl always shows up on “DA2 elves are ugly.” I can understand why, I mean, egad… that makeup and those shrunken-in cheeks, but everyone always uses the same, super bad shot of her – honestly, if you get her as a servant/slave, and talk to her in the Hawke estate, she really doesn’t look that bad: I think the biggest issue is her makeup and lack of eyebrows. Change that, and she is bound to look x10 better.

As Maclimes posted quite a few pages back, there is this comparison of elves
from Origins and their counterparts in DAII:

http://i.imgur.com/5cyKF.jpg%3C/a%3E

In my opinion, Marethari looks far better (though that might also have to do with the hairstyle she used in origins and how it framed her face, too). Zevran could have been much worse, though I think they should have put much more care into his face – more so when he was a love interest in Origins. As for Merrill… I’d much preferred if they kept her gorgeous bright blue eyes and her darker skin complexion, though no love was lost for the Origins Merrill
otherwise, really. XD

But despite all of this, I don’t really see elves in DAII looking “sexy” or “desirable”: I saw much more beautiful elven NPCs in Origins, such as Shianni, Mithra, Iona, Nelaros, Tamlen, Marin, and the list goes on.

Though, with the new elves, it’s really hard for me to imagine them… seducing someone. Zevran mentions how the Crows like to have elven assassins, Leliana mentions how nobility in Orlais like elven servants, so we can all agree that in general elves are suppose to be relatively beautiful and exotic, yes? Even though I’ve romanced both Fenris and Merrill, I didn’t really find either or “seductive,” persay… Though to be totally fair, neither of them are exactly seductive characters. Ah, well…

There was no reason Sketch should have went from this:

to this:

Image IPB

Everyone talks about how Zevran’s was so bad, but IMO, Sketch got it the worst.
;___;

I think that BioWare should take a step back, and do some tweaking on them: Keep some of the features of them found in DAII like the irises and the nose bridges, but go back to the roots a bit more:

Image IPB

(Again, another one of tmp7704’s pics… can’t find the
exactly page, but it’s from this thread: http://social.biowar...ndex/7566177/18)

Still recognizable, and still rather attractive if I do say so myself. Something I can see being sexy much easier then the adorable deer-people.

At the end of the day, though, to be fair, Dragon Age II was rushed, and there are certain concepts that sound pretty freaking amazing that really didn’t show up in the end game with all sorts of different face shapes and stuff. If I can find it, I’ll edit my post.

And to be totally honest, I think the elves in Skyrim are butt-ugly, and Bioware shouldn’t take any “tips” from them. Just… no. e__e

I agree with everything you said. Also, I would like some elves that have eyes other than the slanty Navi eyes. Although they can be attractive, not everyone of a single race would have the exact same eyes. Some of the NPCs in DAO did have different eyes, so I don't know why they didn't in DA2 ("Rushed!" shouted the little voice.) :)

Also, once more, on sketch, BURN IT WITH FIRE!!!

I like Dragon Age II elves more. I like how they eyes are like jewels, so that alone is pretty amazing. Some of the ears were a bit too big, but I enjoyed that elves look a bit alien from humans. Either way is not that big of a deal for me..

Tallis doesn't look nearly as inhuman as the other elves. I would have preferred that.

As for Boris Vallejo elves that the OP suggested? No. Given what was already in DA, that would look like t&a for nothing more than t&a's sake. We've had enough done to the series to try to reach such audiences to the detriment of the series' story and maturity.

I like the idea that male elves look slightly less masculine and female elves look less-endowed than typical teenage-fantasy human women. There needs to be a noticeable difference rather than just knife-ears, but I think that going mutant like the second Dragon Age was a bit much. It made the attraction between Human and Elf seem a bit deviant to me.

Headshots bear some semblance in style to some non-nude works on males. (Interesting that you picked out just the nude women, neither of which are elves.)

I don't see Boris' style in the NWN pics the OP posted beyond the paint style and color pallet choices (which is similar). Boris' males are generally very buff with large square faces.

They look like freaks, unless you want avatar elves. Their noses, eyes and ears are terrible looking in DA2! I have nothing against big eyes, but they belong in anime.

Imagine if they made the Dragon Age Redemption film into DA2 elves? Do you think they look beautiful now? Admit it! The DA2 elven designs are an abomination!

Image IPB

    ^ Ok design                                                                        ^ Keep that design away from the elves...

Image IPB

 ^ Ah.... much better....

Those of us that will be playing as elves in DA3 (if its an option) want to look epic and not a alien dear or whatever you want to call it.... So it might be ok for most of you that can't be bothered of elves and how they appear, but I do... especially if I have to role-play with them for 24 hours or more.

If they release DA3 i'll make sure to look at the in game character models and if they still look like dears i'm done with them forever. I won't fall for trailers or concept art when they can't even get it right.
