Oh, is this another one of those threads where some people cherry pick the best looking elves from other media to compare to the worst looking elves in DA2 as if it means something?

*reads*

It is!

There's only four good looking elves in DA2 according to the BW Good Elf theory and the accuracy of this theory is disputed and questioned by the scientific community due to no real empirical evidence.

The aforementioned scientific community's qualifications are disputed and questioned by the good taste committee due to allegations of intellecutal dishonesty and employment of logical fallacies.

Objection!

The aforementioned scientific community has recieved numerous awards for their work and many of their arguments have been supported by empirical evidences in the past. Dr.Marley Sherlock Gab Punjabi (Ph.D., Theoretical Chemist) is the head of the scientific team in question and he has received the Graduate Student Council Teaching Award from MIT for his course on general relativity, as well as research grants from NASA, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the National Science Foundation.

DA2's elves might not be as beautiful as Neverwinter Night's or those two studs on page 2 of the thread, but they are exotic and unique. I quite liked the change from DA:O to DA2 as they really feel like a different species now and not just smaller, skinnier humans.

Fenris is very charming and even arabic looking. Merrill is the cutest thing ever. Granted, in both cases their respective voice actors helped a great deal in making the characters as instantly appealing as they are (for very different reasons of course), but they are still good examples of this new design for Dragon Age elves.

DAO Elves were awesome looking.

DA2 Elves were terribad. I hope every single one of them dies in a fire prior to DA3.

And by dies in a fire I mean get redesigned again.

I liked how DAO's elves looked. If Bioware REALLY wanted elves to be distinct, instead of changing dimensions of their faces and bodies, why not go all the way like Kingdom of Amalur's elves?

What they became in DA2 was pretty bad, in my opinion. Fix the dimensions and try something else- change the way they walk, talk, carry themselves, the things they do, subtle things, that will separate them from everyone else.

Fenris and Merrill are two of the examples than come to mind when I think of elves from Dragon Age 2 that looked good. However I will say that I don't think that those loooooooooooooooong pointy ears suit them. They just look odd even on Fenris and Merrill who are two of most well designed elves in the game.

I think good-looking elves can be created with DA's new artstyle but more work clearly needs to be put into their construction. We know DA2 was rushed and maybe that's what contributed to most elves looking odd and wierd while Merrill and Fenris looked good.

Just don't turn to the side Merrill...you don't look good on the side...

On another note if a new engine is being used for Dragon Age 3 then it's likely that the elves could look a little bit different and more easier on the eyes than what we get in DA2. Look at DA2 elves in this concept art:

They don't look as bad at their in-game counter-parts. The only thing that annoyed me here was that the female elf seems to have longer ears than the male elf. Other than that they look okay.

Personally, I'm fine with their ears. They're bigger and heavier, so their tip sits lower.
It is true that most other elves in DA2 don't look as good as those companions do, and most likely due to low budget/time constraints. But if Bioware keeps this design for DA3, I won't be bothered nor will my enjoyment of the game be hindered by it.

The good taste committee offers apologies to the scientific community as a whole, and further clarifies that it is merely the self-declared representative of the scientific community in this thread that is engaging in the acts of intellectual dishonesty and employment of logical fallacies, and hopes that said self-appointed representative stops misrepresenting such an esteemed community by acting in such manner.

Hey! I've got documents which say I'm a scientist.

Besides the good taste committe have yet to disprove the claims made by the "so called self-declared" representative of the scientific community in this thread with physical evidence. Therefore at this moment in time the objection still stands. Punjabi wins.

The problem isn't that the elves aren't good looking enough, but that the humans are too good looking.

Posted Image

Stick elves in a game world where the humans are sufficiently unattractive, and suddenly you appreciate how good looking some of them are.

I would prefer if elves in DA3 looked more like the elves from the Forgotten Realms. Look at Neverwinter Nights for example, elves are smaller than humans, skinnier and their facial features are more exotic. Here are some elf portraits from NWN...

Don't compare portraits to 3D models with actual facial expressions and stuff. This was a NWN elf:

Inferior graphics. The descriptions and the lore behind them however stated that most of them were beautiful. In DA2 however we only get a few elves who look good.

The funny thing is that the best looking elves are the ones who look the most human. Just sayin.

If Bioware really wants to make there elves look different, why not make then look human. I don't mean short with long ears, I mean look like every day humans, but with a uncanny valley look about them.
I can't think of any RPG that's had elves look like that.

That IS pretty funny actually, hahaha. Another reason I say they should go back to what DAO had, or to build off of what DAO had.

A friend of mine has the mod that makes DAO elves into DA2 elves. She showed me what my elven Warden would look like as a DA2 elf. I screamed. I think I scared the neighbors... possibly the entire neighborhood.

I wouldn't mind seeing elves like Iorveth in DA3. Also: burly elves, tall elves, chubby elves, elves will facial hair, elves that aren't as white as freshly fallen snow.....

I would like to also see skinny, tall dwarves, that look exactly like humans in every detail.

There was perfect concept of the elf race appearance, by
developers themselves: pretty and attractive. And that's what I want to see in
future games. If there should be distinguishing features, then let those be
pointy ears, big slanting eyes, accurate nose and slender frame. That's enough.
Everything beyond that turns elves into something asexual and contradicts the
original concept. And I want to be fond of elves, not feel scared of them.

I created this image using Photoshop. Basic photo was taken
in the Internet. I think that these racial differences is enough.

The DA2 look of the elfs, helps me with erasing them from the face of Thedas.

Otherwise i would feel bad if i had to murder some hot chick.

Personally, I do not agree with the majority of the art design changes in DA2. It's just that most of them look awful.

I agree with you. In my opinion… elves in the DAO were too “humanlike” because many of
elven faces were not quite harmonious. But  DA2-elves is a nightmare! I was
shocked.

Basically beautiful humans with pointed ears. So there should be no ugly or average looking elves. Elves should hold to the Euro-centric idea of beauty except with pointed ears. No thank you. I seen enough of that in my roleplaying years. I like the difference in the elves for DA2. I like the fact that not all of them are beautiful humans with pointy ears. I like the fact that Bioware can define a different standard of beauty for the elves and any other race. YMMV.

A DAO styled elf at least.

I have another pov on the matter. I've liked a lot the original concept. It was good
and not used much previously. Till creation of the "canon of fantasy"
the elves'd been turned into numerous absolutely different things: from
Tolkien's "beautiful" creatures (what exactly is
"beautiful" in the light of constantly changing conception of beauty
throughout the whole life of humanity - is not clear at all) to scary something
and even scary something with horns and wings. To define elves as sexually attractive
creatures is a nice and fresh idea and quite catching too. A real godsend for
developers. It's one of special appeals of Thedas, it attracts gamers who like
elves for that feature exactly and that's why they choose that race for their
main characters.

But healthy sex appeal needs and requires naturalness. Pop-eyed skin and bone with evident
genetic disease symptoms and anorexia would never be attractive, not for me at
least.

I really don't have a problem with the way the DA elves look. I just have a problem with the fact that we were supposed to accept the complete visual retcon that happened between Origins and II. If we'd had DAII-style elves in DA:O, I'd have accepted them a bit more readily and been less inclined to mentally obsess over their similarities to James Cameron's Avatar creatures.

What I do find hard to get over, however, is that DA lore supports that humans generally find elves incredibly alluring and attractive. I'm a human, and I never found a single DAII elf attractive (except for maybe Fenris in the moments where he actually smiled a little). In fact if I think about rolling in the hay with someone like Tomwise I just can't get over imagining my Hawke breaking the poor guy's ribs repeatedly. Posted Image

Merrill was cute, but as others have said she looked a lot like a waify, pointy-eared, big-eyed human and not very much like the rest of the DAII elves.
