Ignoring the crappy ending, how do you truthfully rate ME3?

It's good, but not that good.
It have some peaks of excellency, but overall it doesn't live up to the first two chapters quality for several reasons (autodialogue, journal system, fetch quests, etc).

I'll give it an 8/10 if you don't count the ending (it's practically a separate game for me anyway)
It had superb voice-acting, the combat felt fluid (even on MP), and the cinematography, combined with the amazing score and (usually) great writing, made it an unforgettable experience. The "lazy" graphics didn't really bother me, as I'd rather have those resources put into the story anyway.
However, the game is bogged down by the relative lack of choices, horrible journal system, occasional plot holes, and limited sidequests.
I have heard more complaints about the graphics, but I honestly think they were awesome (and yes, I have played games like Battlefield 3 and Crisis, at least pieces thereof). (I played on PC).

It's a 7.5/10 for me. Even without the weaksauce ending, it's the weakest entry in the trilogy for me, and i'll quickly list off my reasons:
1. Bad journal system
2. Auto Dialogue
3. Side quests reduced to boring eavesdropping scanning quests
4. Romance scenes for most characters are pitiful
5. Final mission is rushed and anticlimatic
6. Intro is rushed and sloppy
7. No exploration
8. No boss fight
9. A lot of choices didn't amount to anything
10. Too much emphasis on MP
11. Vent kid
12. Day 1 DLC
This is why I got a bit of a problem when people say the first 99% of the game is perfect.
Yeah1
- the vent kid at the ending
- the synthesis at the ending
- the star child at the ending
- no boss fight at the ending
- your choices aren't reflected at ending
so again, what was this thread all about?

I really like the main plot and some of the side missions. Just don't like all the fetch quests after Act 2, and that unhelpful journal. I had a blast with the gameplay and got emotional over the characters. It was quite the experience for me.

"The hardest part of writing any story is its ending. You can have a mesmerizing, exciting tale, full of pathos and action and humor, a story that fans love to an obsessive degree, but if you don’t stick the landing, you’re dooming your piece of work to be remembered for its least satisfying moment. You might enrage your fan base. You might invalidate everything else in your series. You might obliterate every piece of goodwill you ever earned. "

In my first play through, I thought it was one of the best games ever and would've given it 9/10 or 10/10 with no problem (that was right before Harbinger landed and the following crappy ending we got). However after a second and a third play through (the third one was the last, where I just played through the entire series to get a better idea about why the ending sucked), I have to admit that my enthusiasm was misplaced. I was too eager to love this game and didn't and probably didn't notice the flaws.
Example, when I first played Fallout 2 I thought it was a 9/10 game, but after playing another run, I noticed the annoying trend of bugs. It fell down to a 7/10. Now, today, with all the patches made, it's back to 9/10.
While the combat mechanics was without a doubt the best in the series, it was incredible linear, it made even ME2 which was pretty damn linear, seem open. Forced to go one route and select this and that mission. Shepard's head bugged me out too, when he was talking to Liara, he seem to have gotten possessed or something, the way he his turned. And of course the facial save that didn't work. The DLC that was already in the game, left a bitter taste in my mouth too (I still haven't bought it and I refuse to do so) as did the sight of paying real money for weapon packs (I'll never buy one). Other than that, the music was pretty great, the auto dialogue, while it sucked for main squaddies it at least gave us something, and whether you want to admit it or not, it beats having Garrus constantly telling us, he has to calibrate.
So in short I'll give Mass Effect it 8/10
It's a good game, but it's not perfect.
10 out of 10.
But since I consistently give ME3 a 6, I should explain.
Mass Effect 3 certainly isn't without its faults. Even gamebreaking ones (mostly having to do with ME 2 or 1 consistency and squadmates). And the not so minor technical glitches don't help either.
The thing is I don't care.
I honestly can look past the flaws, the bugs, the poor design choices, because most of the game is great, and once and a while, its simply unbelievable (think Tuchanka and Rannoch). It goes beyond its medium. It goes beyond storytelling. It gives players a chance, just for a moment, to live in this amazing vibrant universe. To truly feel what Shepard feels.
That's worth a ten in my book.
