So, a quick couple of question out to everyone:
Do you feel there is enough of a spread of different classes to satisfy a variety of play styles?
Do you feel that any one particular strategy or play style outshines the others?
We try to keep in mind this is about team play with a well-rounded team, of course.
Cheers!
I will answer the OP and Derek at the same time:
Yes, I feel there is a fantastic variety of potential play styles.
Yes, I feel there are strategies and play styles that are more powerful than most, but that's ok! Not everything has to be equal.
classes I play:
Salarian Infiltrator for sniping and Geth Infiltrator for shotgun play. I play these classes when I feel my team is weak or I really want to win one. They are absurdly powerful, but they especially shine when your team mates aren't pulling their weight. No other Infiltrators.
Human Engineer is one of my favorites for his/her versatility. No other Engineers, except on rare occasions the Salarian.
Human Soldier when I'm trying to burn my Assault Rifle amps. This class is highly viable since the buffs. No other Soldiers.
I play nearly all the Vanguards, except I've never touched the Asari. The Human Vanguard is fun for a lolfest, but I appreciate the strategy and thought that goes into playing the Drell and Phoenix. The Krogan is just a goof to run around hulk-smashing everything.
The Vorcha Sentinel is one of my most played classes lately. Sans-Flamer, this class is everything I thought the Human Soldier should've been - no concern for cooldowns at all. I occasionally dabble with the Turian Sentinel when I feel it will synergize with my team. No other Sentinels.
The Drell Adept is one of my favorite characters, and I will often play him if I feel like priming targets with Reave all day long. The Asari Adept is a frequent choice if I know we're going to be playing Cerberus.

Drell Vanguards are really, really fun to play. However they're just too hard for me to play on Gold, so I have to stick to Silver. I don't know how to buff them without making Drell Adepts even better, but Drellguards need something. I have never seen anyone do great with one on Gold. It can be done, there are videos, but have you ever seen a great Drellguard on Gold?
Drell Adepts were great before Grenade Gear, and I will continue to play them when grenade gear gets nerfed. If there is nobody in the lobby to detonate, I usually switch to Asari Adept.
I used to have a lot of fun with the basic Krogan classes using the Graal. The thing is, both the soldier and the sentinel just kind of got left behind. Why would I play either instead of the Batarian Soldier or Vorcha Sentinel (both good, fun classes)? Or Krogan Vanguard, though I avoid them due to the irritatingly long Charge animation.
I sometimes play Salarian or Geth Engineers for Tech Bursts if there's a lot of tech classes in the lobby. Not my favorite classes but they work. I don't like infiltrators and don't play them at all these days.
My main concern is that new, powerful classes are added in every DLC. That's fine by itself, but where does it leave the old classes? How many Drellguards or Krogan Sentinels are there on Gold? QFE are at least getting a buff, which is good news.

Yes, but we'd love more.
Infiltrators. 40% of the Public Golds I enter are 3 Infiltrators.

Female Quarian Engineer
Female Quarian Infiltrator
Human Soldier
I usually play silver, but sometimes gold if I want more challenging gameplay. I feel my FQE does pretty well in silver, but in gold (as much as I love the gal) her turret and cryo/incinerate combo seems very weak compared to all the biotic explosions, tac scans, arc grenades, and sniping going around. Hopefully, next week's inspection of the QFE will result in some nice buffs for her. She needs the love. Love her!

Short answer - Yes.
Longer answer - I think there's room to explore a bit more a variety of play styles within each class. ME2 & ME3 was a shift from ME1 in that each class gained a signature, defining power that the build largely revolved around. In co-op, having only 3 abilities magnifies this effect.
Is it possible to have a vanguard without Biotic Charge or an Infiltrator without Tactical Cloak? Not sure, but it might be interesting to play a Vanguard with Adrenaline Rush, Stasis, and Lift Grenades...
Derek Hollan wrote...

Biotic combos seem to occupy the top of the heap in terms of effective strategies. Works against all enemies, scales with difficulty, works at all ranges.
Tech combos are almost as effective, but I think Cryo and Fire combos probably need a little help.
You don't see Gold lobbies organizing a team melee plan very often...
Thanks for soliciting feedback. I do have a request in return, it would be very interesting if you shared data on how much each class is played and which powers and weapons are most utilized or have been responsible for the most kills.

Flamer needs a range boost (For the same reason SHOCKWAVE did) Bloodlust needs 20 second stacks. And the power/weapon evo should be power 7.5% or weapon 5% for the stack bonus, 15% power bonus is crappy for having to keep stacks rolling, and flamer is not good enough to merit choosing it over a huge 15% weapon bonus potential.

Turian Soldier, Any Adept, Any Engineer, and Geth Infiltrator, and I can play Sentinal and Vanguard, but I don't normally play them as often as the others.

Adept - Asari Justicar
Soldier - Human
Engineer - Salarian, Geth
Sentinel - Vorcha, Turian
Infiltrator - Salarian, Quarian Male, Geth
Vanguard - Krogan Battlemaster
My favourite class is Salarian Engineer, second is Human Soldier.
Last week I've started play with Asari Vanguard, never tried that sniper-stasis combo:) I like it.

However the new classes don't make it easy...
They are far too similar between races.
Sharing 2 powers makes it difficult to differentiate.

For each class I'd have to say:
Adept: Drell. The new pheonix is fun as well but I just love the drell adept.
Soldier: Human with claymore. Claymore has to be my favorite weapon in the game and it works well alongside the human soldiers adrenaline rush.
Engineer: Salarian. I loved this class before it was cool (I.E. FBWGG) I unlocked it early on and after using it in MP I decided to take decoy in SP as my bonus power most of the time. Decoy is amazing, truly a great support class. Nothing like a well placed decoy that distracts two banshees and brute.
Vanguard: Krogan. So much fun, feels like a real damage soaker. It's great against geth because for once you get to turn the tables and stunlock everything they throw at you with charge and heavy melee.
Sentinel: Vorcha with claymore and saber. Used to be the turian but the vorcha is another class that fits my playstyle, plus it combines the cluster grenades that I like from the drell with the ability to use a claymore.
Infiltrator: Tough call here, I think this is one of the classes where I don't favor one species more than the other. I did just unlock the Quarian male though and arc grenades are AMAZING. Also claymore.

Other than that, Batarian Sentinel is another of my favourites/most-played (electro-net for CC, power fist for popping heads up close, and N7 Crusader for popping them at a distance).
I do my best to give all classes a shot, but I'm not much for Adepts or Infiltrators (though I'm doing quite well with the QMI with a Valiant II - thank you lucky Commendation/Victory packs Mastiff weekend).

In general, yes. The ability for any class to equip any weapon homogenizes the classes somewhat in the sense that you can snipe perfectly well as an Adept or as an Infiltrator, but powers, the weight cooldown system, and passive bonuses still give the player incentive to equip or not equip certain weapons.Do you feel there is enough of a spread of different classes to satisfy a variety of play styles?
I like how, for example, all of the Engineers are able to use a power capable of drawing enemy fire away from the rest of the team. (Except the male Quarian for some reason, which I find extremely odd.) This means that an Engineer can be counted on to distract the enemy, despite the class lacking a unifying power like Charge or Tactical Cloak. Not really relevant, and I'm not sure it was intentional, but I like it nonetheless.
On a similar note, the new Rebellion characters feel more like 3 instead of 6. Each pair shares 2/3 powers, with one or the other having a generally superior third power, which leaves the second by the wayside. There are very few situations where Singularity is more useful than Charge, for instance, especially since the Phoenix classes both have a perfectly good crowd control power already in Lash.
One thing I would like to see more of is highly support oriented classes like the Justicar or Geth Engineer. The only other characters I can think of that can match their team support abilities are the male Quarians with Tactical Scan.
I'll point out the elephant in the room and talk about Infiltrators first. I assume they're meant to be burst damage specialists, considering their past history of being sniper rifle specialists and Tactical Cloak forcing a delay between brief, high powered damage spikes. The problem (in my opinion) is that the mechanics of Tactical Cloak bypass the weapon cooldown system entirely -- you can have a Javelin and Claymore equipped at the same time, and as long as you cycle your cloak properly you'll never have to deal with more than a 3-4 second cooldown, and all your powers will have a damage bonus to boot. This makes Infiltrators unduly powerful in almost every aspect of the game -- weapon damage, power damage, and support (via capturing objectives and reviving downed allies). This needs to be addressed somehow, the sooner the better IMO.Do you feel that any one particular strategy or play style outshines the others?
Grenade classes suffer from limited ammo supply on most maps -- only Ghost, Hydra, Goddess, and Jade have any ammo boxes with more than 1 grenade available, and if you have 2 or more grenade classes in play at once one or the other often ends up going without. I can't speak to the effectiveness of the new grenade capacity gear seeing as I don't have them yet, but since the issue is a matter of resupplying after you run out instead of general capacity, I can't see how they'll really help.
Various bugs need to be fixed properly before the affected classes and weapons can be accurately discussed. Vanguards and SMGs stand out the most here.
Edit because I forgot the original purpose of the topic:
I generally prefer caster-type classes, although it may be more accurate to say that I prefer classes that rely heavily on power use since I doubt anyone would refer to Infiltrators and Vanguards as casters. Which means pretty much everyone except Soldiers. (And Sentinels, oddly enough. No idea why.)

I always switch between all of them (classes and races) and I still get bored as hell of the game. Not sure if it's from lack of charachter variety or lack of game type/objectives variety ..... Take that for what it's worth.Derek Hollan wrote...

Obviously infiltrators far outshine everyone else.
