Man, sometimes even the silliest things can make people positive on here.

I remember this one dude who had a song play every time he posted in a thread, and every time a new page was made in that thread, he'd post and everyone would be forced to listen to a random hilarious song.

Had everyone ROLLING. It was so good to know everyone was giggling like crazy.

Eventually we got the mods to deal with it, but man. That was a fun time.

I can deal with negative opinions (I mean, they are like a-holes, everyone has one); it's the lack of respect that drives me bonkers. And the schooling. Can't we all just be awesome to each other?

I feel like a lot of people were being positive in the past, and then some people decided, "I'm gonna be rogue and be all negative".

Problem with that is, now it seems a ton of people are being negative and its the rogue thing to be positive these days.

You used to be able to tell a stranger "Good Morning" and have them smile and respond in kind.

Now they're like, "Who the hell are you?" and scoff.

Jeez.

Indeed, it's hard to stay positive when there's always some people who are depressed and end up ruining others moods.

I guess it pays to interact and stick with the positive people in life.

Hey LPPrince - you're right about positivity. People want to argue? How about this:

I think you're super cool. No, seriously - I wish all the best things for you in life. Oh, you don't believe me? Well, whatever - I'll be here with something uplifting to say whether you want to hear it or not.

How was that? Image IPB

Now it is time to contaminate the positivity with my negativity.

Ready?

I don't think I've ever seen a happy forum. Honestly most of the internet is hateful and or depressing. I've tried to do better personally, less arguing, antagonizing, etc, and trying to be more more constructive and polite in my posts/responses.

Thats all we can do. Hopefully through that we can inspire others to do the same.

Happiness is often the death of discussion. Usually when everyone is happy go lucky and agrees on a topic, it goes off track until a thread gets put back on course by an authority figure or locked. More frequently, the thread will simply fade into the archives.

Conflict is a call to action. It's a great motivator. I think most folks enjoy the feeling of validation that comes from believing they are correct; and successfully imposing their opinions on others. Then there are people who just want to get a rise out of others. Those folks are so common online there is a freakin' name for them. :P

I'm with strive. Aside from small private forums comprised of close friends and acquaintances, I doubt Shangri-la exists online. I try not to be a jackass and worsen the situation when possible. Sometimes I fail at that depending on my mood. I don't know if there's much else that can be done unless you figure out the secret of mind control.

I don't think negativity and conflict have to be melded together though.

There can be positive conflict.

It's exceedingly rare in my experience. The only time I've seen it is among close friends, and even then it's easy for someone to cross a line if they're not careful. As an aside, I also think these forums are sorely lacking in moderation compared to the old Bioboards. There was a lot of crap you couldn't get away with then that you can now.

Yeah, that topic's been brought up a ton for a LOOOONG time now. This forum does need more moderating, or at the very least more forumites that are willing to help out the moderators we DO have.

I'd imagine that would have quite the effect on the positivity in here.

I am a big fan of positive conflict. I have to admit it is rare though. And often fleeting even among close friends as if the subject is near and dear to someone's heart there is the constant risk of things getting taken personally even under the best of circumstances.

I try to follow these words of wisdom, with mixed success:

"I think we ought always to entertain our opinions with some measure of doubt. I shouldn't wish people dogmatically to believe any philosophy, not even mine."
~Bertrand Russell

"Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

"You can be at ease only with those people to whom you can say any damn fool thing that comes into your head, knowing they will respond in kind, and knowing that any misunderstandings will be thrashed out right now, rather than buried deep and given a chance to fester."
-- Travis McGee

If people were only willing to see things from another person's perspective more often.

And if they can't grasp what the other person's perspective is based on, to at the very least respectively and kindly ask them to elaborate.

Positivity, eh? Well, maybe EAware should first stop constantly shoving a middle finger to the face of their customers and make good games again. I think that would help lessen the complaints and whining a LOT.
