Most of my party is at level 5 right now. Should I enter the Firewine ruins?

Many people consider firewine ruins one of the toughest areas in the original BG 1. You need high missile resistance on your tank, and your thief has a lot of work to do with the traps.

Myself, I actually ignore most of the dungeon. There's a secret entrance to the ruins in Gullykin that I use to defeat the menace in there. Once you win that battle, you can report to the mayor your success.

If you do want explore the whole area, just proceed slowly and carefully. Level 5 is OK, not many high level monsters, just so dangerous with the tight corridors so pathing can cause trouble sometimes.

With my set up I can no longer do what Corey suggests. Posted Image

I think that SCS modified things deliberately to stop this method which I also used to use.

However you can still kill the evil halfling that way, but you can't take the short cut to kill the bosses without facing countless kobolds.

What I would recommend in addition to having good missile resistance on your tank is to use a protection from fire scroll. It's worth it due to there being so many kobold commandoes.

A wand of fire/oil of fiery burning etc. for the times when there are hordes of them is also useful.
