Because Halo 3 opens following one of the books (Or was it a comic?), not Halo 2.

Deus Ex Human Revolution, Red Dead Redemption, GTA IV, Max Payne 2 and 3, Dead Space 2, Halo Reach, and all the other Mass Effect games had good endings.

You know, at the time everyone hated it.. Now, yeah.. its actually really good. And any fault was massively redeemed in Halo 3. And Halo: ODST. And Halo: Reach. And probably Halo 4.

Mass Effect doesn't have this luxury. This is the last game with Shepard.

Dead Space 2.

I could see Isaac Clarke having the whole.. self-sacrifice thing work
really well for him. Everyone he knows is dead, including his
girlfriend. He's been wrestling with insanity, loneliness and endless
swarms of vaguely identified monsters that even he doesn't understand.
I remember at the end of Dead Space 2 how he finally conquered his inner
demons and sat there on the floor waiting for death, but finally able
to relax for the first time in god knows how long. I was alright with
that. I smiled, awaiting my beloved protagonist's inevitable death.

Mass Effect is not Dead Space, however. 



Inb4 Isaac Clarke gets the happy ending.

Literally every game. I'm not trying to exaggerate or anything even remotely similar, ME3's ending was just the biggest disappointment in gaming history. It feels like it would actually take a lot of effort to screw it up that badly and contort the story and driving themes the way BioWare did, but...that's another story for a different thread.

To use an example? The Sims franchise has a better ending than Mass Effect 3.

Yeah, sports games. Especially 2K11 since on the hardest difficulty I took those 1995-96 Seattle Supersonics and showed those Chicago Bulls who's boss 4-1 in a best of 7. Revenge at last. KMA Michael Jordan. Happy ending.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution's endings were beautiful. And all of them were thoughtful. But my favorite was the fourth option, just letting humanity choose on its own, and not interfering.

As far as the best ending of all time... Difficult, but BioShock, for me. Totally changed my line of thought.

And off the top of my head... Read Dead: Redemption... Medal of Honor 2010... Metal Gear Solid 3... Mafia 2 and L.A. Noire (I feel these crime-related game endings required a sort of acquired taste for bittersweet, though)... These games all have great endings, too.

Oh jeez, and how could I forget... Mass Effect 2! Figures... But it was probably one of the best ending missions ever made... ever. On the edge of my seat the whole first playthrough.

To tell you the truth, it's easier to count the games that have a worse ending than Mass Effect 3.
Borderlands had a pretty obscure ending, but then again who the hell played that game for the story?
Halo 2 had an abrupt ending (a LOT of people raged about it)
Fable 2 had one of the worst climaxes out of any game I've ever played.
Assassin's Creed 2. Not so much the ending as the final boss (a fist fight with the pope?)
Fallout 3 (before Broken Steel).

At the other end of the spectrum:
MGS4: This is how you end a franchise.
Portal 2: Hard to explain without spoiling it.
Limbo: Pay attention Bioware, this is how you do speculation.

I was waiting for someone to mention Portal 2. I thought it was a perfect way to wrap it up.

After this whole ME3 fiasco, it doesn't seem bad at all. But it was just so abrupt it left you thinking "God damnit, now I have to wait four years to figure out what the f*** just happened."

I know, its the middle game of the trilogy, but it didn't have to end that suddenly.

Damn, now I miss the days when Halo 2 had the most controversial ending ever. :/

Max Payne 3, it wasn't really /noir/ but damn it felt good when I finished it.

WoW Cataclysm. Much as it was criticized for having huge plot-holes, ME3 makes it look half-way decent.
