You know those moments. Where your suspension of disbelief kicks into overdrive, and for a moment you're ignoring the fact that these are digital equations on your screen and have happily invested yourself in this world the game developers have created for you.

Here are mine:

http://desmond.image...jpg&res=landing

Tatooine (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic) - I'd played a number of Star Wars games before KOTOR. But Bioware takes the cake for capturing the feel of atmosphere of one the series' iconic locations with their amazing RPG.

Image IPB

Flotsam (The Witcher 2: Assassin's of Kings) - We've seen forests and run down villages in fantasy rpgs before. But have any of them have felt more real and alive like the setting for TW2's first chapter?

Image IPB

Changing Weather (Red Dead Redemption) - Whether it be the thunderstorm or a setting sun on the horizon, the changing countryside of Rockstar's open world Western can't help but astound me.

Image IPB

Sovereign attacksThe Citadel (Mass Effect) - I liked Mass Effect's story and it's characters, but it's environments left a lot to be desired. That is... until this moment. While you run on the side of the Citadel with Sovereign's massive body looms over the Horizon, you know the fate of galaxy rests on your shoulders.

Image IPB

Drake fight (Dragon's Dogma) - Fighting dragons in RPG's are a common occurence. Yet has there been any other game like Capcom's Dragon's Dogma that has captured the feel of fighting a forty foot fire breathing lizard?

That's all I have for now. I'll try and think up of other examples as I can.

Walking into Market area of Western Brit. Bank in Ultima Online. "All those guys are like.. real people?!?!"

Seeing the port town  Ratchet and Booty Bay for the first time in WoW.

Grasping the combination of ridiculously epic scale and sheer amount of immersive details present in jungles of Stranglethorn Vale in WoW.

The starting moments of Icewind Dale I; Stepping out of the inn into the bitter cold waiting  outside. As soon as you do, the rather rather awesome Easthaven by Jeremy Soule starts playing on bacground. I'm sure atleast 3 out of 5 people just stop there for a while: )

Eve Online has offered a ton of aesthetically  pleasing, atmospheric moments that are somehow comparable to my IWD moment.

Most of my WoW moemnts come in MMOs it seems.

I love Icewind Dale. Jeremy Soule's amazing score is a large reason why that game is so memorable.

Come to think of it, he also composed the music for KOTOR. And I think he did great in capturing the feel of John Williams' music for Star Wars.

The entire game of RDR pretty much. Just all of it. From the first time you arrive at Armadillo to that first encounter with a Bear in Tall Trees (the music at night is eary and I love it)
The creepiness of Tumbleweed. First time arriving in Mexico!!! But most of all that big epic moment when you reach 100% (just die a few weeks ago and it was glorious)
Not to mention Undead Nightmare stuff like the Sasquatch side mission or capturing one of the horses of apocolypse :D

Uncharted that moment when the crazy zombie monkeys show up (I had no idea their would be a supernatural element to this game)

Uncharted 2 Riding part of a room while being chased by a helicopter and that whole train sequence (MMMMMM)

Uncharted 3 ship graveyard followed by storm chasing cruise ship followed by fighting through cruise ship and ending with escaping the sinking ship as you run from the flood of water (this whole part is my favorite of all 3 games)

Amnesia..... The entire game!

There's more but I'm falling asleep here and it'll have to wait.

X-Wing Alliance. Being given the wrong coordinates one mission, you fly into an Imperial gunnery range. In between four Star Destroyers and their targets. Then later pilot the Falcon for the entire battle of Endor.

Baldur's Gate 2. Just the sheer scope of it was jaw droping.

The plot twist in KotOR.

The vistas of KOTOR; would actually hang out in some places to scope the view.

The campaign world created in NWN1; being able to hang with friends for 5 yrs in sessions allowed for the PnP feeling to return.

The music of ME; was unable to actually play for a while, but the music was intriguing enough to run opening sequenses for pleasure.

The vistas and Tech of DAO; many screenies taken of snowcovered Ostagar, Kill shots, characters, etc, and being able to see them again today. Without the auto-Tech, would still be using standard portraits.

The Hespith reveal in DAO; chilling.

The vistas of SWTOR and Skyrim,; wondermous places to see and visit while adventuring.

As far as older games, the first time I played a Gold Box AD&D game on my roomies computer, and discovered I had been on for 12 hrs straight. Also seeing Balor replace guards in one city; was a glitch, but believe me when I sat there in stark surprise,

Facing Yaga Shura and his army in Throne of Bhaal. Most epic feeling moment *ever*. It was the kind of scenario I used to dream about reading fantasy stories as a child. A band of heroic individuals against a giant and his entire army set to one of the most epic music I ever heard in a game. I had to do a fist pump after winning that battle. XD

Another epic moment from the same game was the first time I fought Firkraag.

The first time I defeated an opponent in Street Fighter Alpha with combos I had been practicing for days.

The Ocean House hotel in VtMB.

The opera scene in FFVI. That was pretty impressive music considering it was limited by cartridge memory.

A whole bunch of co-op moments across various games that could fill a post by themselves.

In general anytime a game managed to do something I used to daydream games might do someday, I was floored. For example, the first time I played Star Control II and heard full voice acting it seemed like the greatest thing ever. :)

Ha! I loved that fight. Just your Bhaalspawn and companions laying waste to Yaga Shura's army was awesome.

Before Dragon's Dogma, that was the most epic dragon fight I've experienced in a game.

^ I drove the Mako around in ME1 and just had to sit awhile and enjoy the beauty.

Also, I loved riding my trusty horse up to the top of a hill in RDR and gazing accross the countryside.

Last, Bioshock's color-scheme was simply fantastic.

Finally thought up of new examples:

Image IPB

Fighting with Luke Skywalker (SW: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast) - You know you're part of the Star Wars universe when you're fighting alongside one of the main characters.

Image IPB

First Predator room (Batman: Arkham Asylum) - The moment where a comicbook game gets one element of a character so right (said element being stalking scared as f**k crooks without being seen), and you realize you're not playing a crappy licesned game. You are ndeed... the goddamn Batman.

Protecting Lorenzo De Medici (Assassin's Creed 2) - As if recreating 15th century Florence and being chummy with Leonardo Da Vinci wasn't enough, the game has you saving the ass of one the Rennaissance era's most notable figures. The fact that it's a real historical event makes it all the more sweeter.

Finally someone with a good taste! :D

Jedi Knight II is full of epic win. I also like the three missions that happen in that asteroid. They're SO awesome. Lots of Dark Jedi to kill and heavy structures ..

And about more Bioware (in minor WOW approach):

- NWN -> had a nice soundtrack that every moment of it was enjoyable / Mazes / Magical Places and Forests
- NWN: Shadows of Undrentide -> When you turn into stone and remain like that for thousands of years!
- NWN: Hordes of the Underdark -> The beholders and that Brain (? I can't remember exactly)
- KOTOR I -> Korriban Tombs / Taris Undeground
- DA:O > Death of Duncan / Two Dragons of the game (besides the final boss) / Dwarven underground ruins / Werevolves / Fade
- ME > Sovereign Talk / Saren Talk / Vigil Talk / Attack of the Citadel / Udina's megalomaniac gesture (quite enjoyable)
- ME2 > Harbinger avatars / Derelict Ship / IFF mission / Some of recruit and loyalty Missions / the epic T.I.M
- ME3 > Grunt's Last Stand / Tuchanka's sacrifice / Tuchanka's grand Thresher Maw / Asari Homeworld (and how they suck knowledge from Prothean relic!)/ Fighting Small Reaper / Catalyst (in WTF way!)

I'm sad I didn't think of that one.  The second that appeared, I knew, this is the Batman game we all wanted.

Halo Reach's ending.  That last stand was just perfect.

The first time I played Final Fantasy VII and saw that train rolling in. Then the cutscene seamlessly transferred into gameplay.
