The portals in Prey never get enough credit even though they were implemented before Portal was released, I remember it really threw me out the first time I saw it walking through an arch that seemed to go nowhere and finding my self in a totally different room that seemed to seemlessly occupy the same space as the previous room.

Yep, he is the best composer video games have ever seen for sure.

In your opinion? Personally I really dont see what is so great about Soule, to me his music is kind of bland and lacks any real sense of direction or emotion, sure some of his tunes have some semblance of a nice melody but they always seem a bit off somehow.

Some more. I've been gaming since the Atari so there's been a lot of WOW moments.

First playing Smugglers Run and seeing off in the distance and the game engine not having to artificially put fog or some other obstacle in the way. That was the first game I saw that had amazing draw distances. I believe it was a launch title for PS2.

Any moment in Skyrim that involves you climbing or scaling a mountain and then just looking out, so many beautiful scenic vistas, plains waterfalls icebergs and more to explore and find.

Playing Stunt Race FX on the SNES and going underwater. It looks like crap now but back then it blew my mind.

Speaking of water. Wave Race 64 and then the sequel on the Gamecube has some amazing water effects for their time. Blew me away.

Just thought of another one. The first time I played Gran Turismo. Wow that game was amazing with it's cutting edge graphics, physics, depth and sheer amount of cars. We never really had a true Sim Racer before GT hit the scene.

Yes, let us begin debating wether or not these WOW moments of people are valid WOW moments worthy of community approval.

I really want to add some specific moment from BG I and/or II but their grandness sneaked in in such subtle fashion, tis hard to pick anything specific from either. Ohh wait I know I know! Arriving to city of Baldur's Gate for the first time. One could easily burn entire weekend exploring it.
Also, feeling completely lost and swallowed by the  neverending forests of sword coast. I loved feeling like a small lvl 5 gimp who has disappeared in a very big world! Story of BG I at that point gave such emotions plenty of breathing space in pretty unique and nice fashion.

I've spend some 30 minutes calculating enemy ship's course, speed and distance.(actual math mind you! Not picking some fancy options from dialogue wheel or whatnot)  Then I need to come up with a valid  firing solution and finally launch the torpedos ..and 5 mins later I hear  the explosions as I hit my target for first time ever in Silent Hunter 3. Seriously, those 2-5 mins after firing torpedos and waiting to see wether or not they hit is very specific, unique type of exitenment I haven't experienced in any other game or genre. Gotta love submarines.=]

The 100th death in Dark Souls...a rapid and quick one when you're carrying 18,000 souls. Where you see you health go full to dead in a split second, with massive bloodloss and poison compounded on top of that even though your dead and it can't affect you. Just there in case you were alive still.

Seeing Ragnaros rise out his pool for the first time in WoW, and thinking "we're going to kill that?"

Lao Shan-Lung in Monster Hunter. Fight, and kill a living mountain.

Watching goons panic and drop their bundle as you pick them off in Arkham Asylum. You truly are Batman.

The sound of metal scraping on metal became the sound of absolute terror in Silent Hill 2 once that THING appeared.

Batman Arkham Asylum. This moment in the game really made me go "Wow". It's happening just as you're about to meet the Scarecrow, and the game goes meta on you, tricking you into thinking "Something's wrong, something's terribly wrong". Wow.

Oh yeah doesn't matter how many times I playthrough that (and trust me I've done it a LOT) I still think something is wrong with my computer every time. Very good trick.

^ along the same lines, wasn't there a game for the Genesis that required you to actually hit the reset button on the actual console? I think it was an X-Men game.

Kotor: The plot twist and final confrontation/resolution

*EDIT* Kotor II: When Kreia and you confront the remaining Jedi Council. A very powerful and very DIFFERENT type of scene that I would not expect from a Star Wars story.

Red Dead Redemption: Far Away kicks in upon first riding into Mexico

Mass Effect: Dialogue Wheel...seriously I thought this was the coolest thing ever.

Mass Effect 2: Watching the Collector attack and then BAM! Mass Effect 2 logo appears. The way the whole Suicide mission was done. Never experienced something like that in a game before.

Jedi Outcast: Kyle retrains on Yavin IV and the Force Theme plays in the background. I felt like I was actually learning the ways of the force.

SWTOR: On Alderaan my smuggler was challenged to a duel. He shot first. Perfection.

Max Payne 3: The opening level.

Dead Space: Killing monsters in Zero G.

More WOW moments.

The first time I pulled off a fatality. Loved doing the deadpool one too.

The first time I pulled off an Ultimate Combo in KI.

Playing Fallout 3 and leaving Vault 101 and the sunlight shines in your eyes then dissapates and all you see is a massive world to explore and go anywhere.  The sheer magnitude was impressive.

Pretty much all the boss fights in Shadow of the Colossus. Ehrmergerdd!!

The voice acting and cast in Grand Theft Auto III. The first time I seen some star studded casting for a video game. Obviously it was done before in the CD-Rom age but they were actually acting and I wasn't aware. Privateer II had an amazing cast.

The ending sequence of Super Metroid.

Mode 7 graphics. Especially in Pilotwings and F-Zero. Parachuting, handgliding and the plane were great fun. The helicopter missions not so much.

The blazing speed of F-Zero X and GX.

Being blown away by Dead Space's atmosphere lighting and tension.  Navigating in Zero G.

Descent games.  Wow what can I say.  Six degrees of  freedom control.  First game to do it I believe.  Blew my mind.

Giving money to a stripper in Duke Nukem. WHOA!! Did she just....

Doom II. First ever FPS I played. So many wow moments in that. Seeing my first Imp, Demon, Revenant, Cacodemon and OMHAHGAWD CYBERDEMON!!

Playing Police Quest and getting the crap scared out of me whenever Jesse Bains would appear.

Batman: Arkham City in the museum you come across a big lake area inside iced up and after penguin taunts you for the umpteenth time you walk across the ice only for this to happen

Image IPB

After saving Mr Freeze and coming back you find most of the ice has melted and you have to ride to the ice lounge on a raft and this happens.

I don't know about anyone else but that freaked me out the first time.

Couple more...

The first time you fight a Dragon in Skyrim.  The epic music kicks in and you keep thinking 'how the hell am I going to kill THAT?  Am I ready and strong enough?'  FUS-RO-DAH!

Playing the Space Armada level for the first time in Starfox. The music and speed of the level was intense.

The first time I saw cel-shaded graphics. I think it was Jet Set Radio.

Playing my 1st rhythm game. Parappa the Rappa was fun for about 5 minutes. But what a 5 minutes.

Call of Duty IV : Modern Warfare nuke scene and the entire Pripyat level.

Medal of Honor Last Stand in Afghanistan.

As other mentioned Batman games. Arkham city had a lot of cool moments included the aforementioned Scarecrow level.

Playing Resident Evil 2 and getting startled by those damn lickers.

Star Wars The Force Unleashed, force pulling an entire star destroyer.

Some of the puzzles in Braid. Hair pulling experience, but boy do you feel like a genius when you figure some of them out.

The inverted level in Limbo. In fact Limbo is a full 2 hour WOW moment.

The 1st and last level of Star Wars Shadows of the Empire.

In terms of environment, I'm going to say the upcoming MMO Blade and Soul. I haven't played it myself, but just watching videos of the environment stunned me in a way visuals in a game haven't in a while.

In gameplay, Shadow of the Colossus was pretty crazy. Just looking at each boss and figuring out how to kill it was pretty jaw dropping.

*CHRONO TRIGGER SPOILER ALERT*

Story wise, it definitely has to be when Crono dies in Chrono Trigger. We all know that you can revive him via sidequest, but the first time playing through it, I was like "WTF? DID THE MAIN CHARACTER JUST DIE?!" The fact that you don't have to revive him and can beat the game without him was even crazier for me.

Before Morrowind, I had never played another game like it.  I was in awe, running around the world thinking "I can go anywhere and do anything?!" Image IPB  I put over 300 hours into that game, from the moment I picked it up.

Probably not the best but certainly the most memorable was when I firsst encountered the redead in the charred remains of Hyrule Castle.

Up until that point OoT had been a reasonably kid friendly game so to see a once bright and jublient town burnt to the ground, filled with blood curdling screams of some woman and the moans of the undead and to top it off having my player-character raped by some hideous monster had me literally drop my controller in fear and refuse to touch the game for about a week. (I was about 5 or 6 when I first played it)

Bastion's new game plus after you pick the "bad ending". Absolutely brilliant and still gets me.

The Searing in Guild Wars, which was relatively calm and generic fantasy until it occured.

Bioshock's "Would you kindly?" was always a big one, simply because of the brilliance of how gamer do things without thinking and how they integrated it into the game.

As tempting as it is to vote on something from the old days, I'm picking the first 30 minutes of God of War 3. Between the insane graphical detail, the camera movements, and the general immersion of that entire mission/level is overdrive for suspension of disbelief.
