Also if you have leveled up your PC a few times does the auto levelup understand what you are trying to do and follows you lead.

I've used Auto-Level a bit on my first couple of playthroughs, but it's hard to get the characters to do what I want without leveling them myself.

I've NEVER auto leveled my PC, so I wouldn't be much help there.

My conclusion is that I'm too picky to auto-level as I have specific plans for my party members. :)

Anyone else care to take a stab?

heh.. I even respecialized all my NPC buddies, in the second run, because I really disapproved their poor choice of attributes and talents for their classes. I made them much better and fun to go with me through NM, even if that means less % party damage for me.

Assuming i'm reading all the code right...

Auto leveling is just a predetermined method of spending points. Basically its just a big list of skills that the computer sorts through and picks the first one that it can. Since it prioritizes higher level abilities over lower ones, it should in general continue with a certain "spec" over something different (ie: it will pick Dual Weapon finesse over Pinning Shot).

Left to its own devices... lets see. Looks like Warriors would end up Sword + Shield, Berserker/Champions. Rogues go a mix of Dual Weapons and Archery and Assn/Duelist. Mages pick the Arcane line, then Fire, Weakness, Lightning, Heroic Offense, Heal... etc etc. and Arcane Warrior/Spirit Healer. Note that each party member has their own list and stat distribution.

Stat points are distributed according to weights and priority. Warriors get mostly strength with some dex, wil and con. Rogues are mostly dex with some str/cun. Mages get magic, willpower and constution (and nothing else).

Suffice to say the computer won't do a spectacular job of designing a character for you, but it should be manageable enough for a casual player.

Shale is an ungodly-strong and hardy tank, but other than that, everyone else is kind of screwed up.

I auto leveled anyone who wasn't in my party regularly. The only people I leveled manually were my PC, Morrigan, Allistar, and Zevran all of whom were in my party the majority of the game

I never auto-level. I want full control. Considering that there's not a lot of different things to do with most characters (perhaps aside from mages), it's pretty quick to make choices of your own. I'd rather have the control then find the game has chosen something I'd never use.

Auto-level seems a waste to me. I would rather choose the stats of my party to ensure they make a good team when working together.

I auto leveled everyone including my human warrior PC for my first play through, which I'm almost finished with. It doesn't apply specializations, you have to do that manually. Once you get a specialization it seems to prioritize the talents that were opened up. My PC is a Templar-Champion and makes a decent tank. I killed Zevran, I don't have anybody who can do traps, no survival. I do have two characters with level 4 herbalism and another with level 3 in the 4 people that I always use.

I'm not sure I could kill Zevran, even for RP.  He's so entertaining.

Autolevel throwing points into herbalism on everyone is terribly inefficient.  In my mage party I had Alistair work on survival, and I miss it when he's not in the party.  In my rogue party my character is learning survival so no one else will have to.  I'm having Wynn and Morrigan both learn herbalism, and Zevran poisons.  Mostly they're wrapping up the combat skills set right now, then I'll probably branch Sten into trapmaking (because I have nothing better to do with him), Leliana can wrap up stealing, and I'll figure out something to do with the rest of them (they can always use more tactics slots I guess).

First thing I do in any game is to turn off auto-features of any kind. Its much more interesting to play without that.
