Still Worth Buying? (And Where do I buy it?)

I've played NWN for years, and it's age is starting to get to me... So I was wondering, does NWN 2 have a decent multiplayer scene, and in what areas? I enjoy roleplaying and action mods. Also, I heard that the campaigns of the second game were pretty great, and that the expansions improved things even more.

More to the point, where do I even buy it? A search on Steam, Gamersgate, GOG, and Gamestop has proven fruitless (I am not going to get the pack with NWN 1 and 2, I already own the first), and Atari doesn't even list it on their site. Not to mention that even the official NWN 2 site has bit the dust as well.

Amazon doesn't have a decent price for the platinum edition. Oddly enough, the only place I've found it at a reasonable price was the online store at Toys R Us for $20. Is there any place I could get it at an even lower price? I would also like to get the digital version if possible to avoid shipping costs.

By the way, I don't believe in piracy. I would much prefer that I support the devs and publishers that are responsible for bringing us the games we play. Even though that the Neverwinter Nights series is even easier to pirate due to lack of Authentication, I still believe in buying the full game in the state of new.

NwN2 is a better game but less polished. Expect bugs and glitches. Though, you have more options in everything, almost. Kaedrin's Pack fixes many of them, though.
The multiplayer is not as strong as NwN1 but PWs look more unique and detailed, in my opinion.

Check out Baldur's Gate - The Sword Coast Chronicles and Dalelands. Both are RolePlaying servers and most servers are like that.

I believe, multiplayer is NwN1's strongest point and single player, NwN2's. More complex and more advanced toolset, means fewer PWs and modules but more detailed and unique ones.

I'm tired of those warnings. I'm not going into fan-boy mode or anything, far from it actually, but the game is perfectly playable and mostly bug-free without any add-on (important bugs at least).

I've heard that NWN2 was a really buggy game when it first came out (I didn't own it then), but that phase was left behind long ago. It has some bugs, as all games do (I "expect bugs and glitches" everywhere), but you might play the whole OC without noticing any. A new player who reads your post may get a wrong idea.

Still, compared to NwN1, it's buggier and that's a fact.
Some spells or feats don't work as intended or at all.
WASD is generally a bad idea, except for reorienting.
Shadows chop framerates a lot.

Yes, it's perfectly playable and mostly bug-free. There is nothing game-breaking in the campaigns, I believe.
Is it as polished or bug-free as NwN1? No. But it's not as buggy as Temple of Elemental Evil, either.
And it packs a LOT more content than NwN1, so more bugs are expected but the pros outweigh the cons.

I prefer to state the facts, so the players know what to expect and not be disappointed. I don't like being a fanboy and say how perfect and flawless this or that game is.

Glad that I specifically stated being far from a fanboy, or you could have gotten a wrong idea... oh, wait.

The game is faaar from flawless. The game is faaar from perfect. The game, though, as you agreed, is "perfectly playable and mostly bug-free". You can say it's more buggy than X or less buggy than Y, but in the end it all comes down to that. Your first post seems to imply otherwise. And that doesn't make me a fanboy.

...I never said you are a fan-boy or that I was referring to you. I only stated that I am objective and will mention both it's pluses and minuses.

I didn't mean that it's broken and uplayable, just that it's not as smooth and polished as Dragon Age or NwN1. I guess I wasn't clear enough.

So, in the end, we both agree that it's far from flawless or perfect but still very enjoyable and playable. ...What were we arguing about, again?

Ok, sorry if I misunderstood you. I just wanted to point that out since I felt that your first post could scare new players a bit.

I played both 1 & 2 and finished both - I personally like 2 much more - the stickfigures in 1 bother me - but that is just me. Having finished both (fully patched to the latest versions) I found that the more realistic graphics of 2 made for a better SP environment - imo - over any MP RP preferences.

I have only built with 2 but I have looked at the toolset from 1 and that gives me another reason to like 2 more.

NWN2 is still worth playing - it seems bigger than 1 and that to me - the scale - makes a difference too.

It's still around, and it's aging pretty well - it's not perfect but it's community makes up for any short comings with many fixes and new features ( just had a hydra show up as a new creature ). With it's current price it is a good value if you've not already paid for it, even if it's a DVD with NWN1 on it it's still worth $20 ( and that gives you extra serial numbers too just in case ). Its about that much on the steam type services except when it goes on sale for half price which is quite often.

Pretty much they are just packing more into the cost of the DVD, you aren't paying more, you are just getting NWN1 for free now. ( and it makes up for the fact that the game is so old ). And it makes it more convenient if you ever do have to reinstall, or if the service you are using goes belly up, you have all the best games on one CD. The retailer just does not want to deal with a product that is cheaper than the given price point.

They have another cd with baldurs gate, planescape and icewind all together, i imagine in a few years that will be merged into one package.

One thing that is nice about this community is how helpful we tend to be. Some seem a bit defensive trying to protect the game and come across a bit strong in this thread, but i've seen a lot more venom with other games. The NWN1 vs NWN2 arguments tend to end up winner take all, when we should be supporting whatever the end user prefers, and suggesting they actually get that new DVD that includes both games. There are community developed modules which only are available for one or the other that are completely amazing, which in and of themselves justify buying both games. Why limit yourself.

It's a complex game which is used in so many ways, and it can have issues that are hard to sort out depending on your individual circumstances. Most games solve this by just not even bothering offering features, but we have a toolset, MP servers, SP games both official and amateur, and a rich set of functions, settings and editors to customize just about everything. Generally the fact there is not much official support ( is there any? ), would be a major issue, except for this community is very supportive, and is hacking the game to bits to solve the issues and implement new features.

The only folks who seem unable to ever resolve their issues are the ones who refuse to even try community solutions for whatever reason ( which is a shame since the developers themselves were very open to integrating fixes we provided ). The client extension by skywing for example actually replaces portions of the game code which fixes many of the remaining bugs just by using it to launch the game.

Thanks for the help. For clarification, Gamestop sells a $30 version with both NWNs plus all expansions. Toys R Us sells NWN2 Platinum for $20. I'll likely pick this up at some point, although I think I might place other games in priority over it (mainly Guild Wars 2).

Bugs don't scare me, as I've dealt with glitches before. As long as they aren't game breaking and infrequent, I'll live with them.

I'm getting a summer job, so that should allow this purchase. Once again, I appreciate your assistance, and please don't start a flame war on the amount of bugs. Every single game on the planet has glitches and bugs, and I wrote these posts knowing Obsidian's reputation in the bugs area, and am willing to accept minor glitching as long as it doesn't detract too much from the experience.

GW2 will not be out for a while.  If you are looking for a solid RPG with a ton of replay value, then pick up NWN2 Platinum wherever you can.  It's too bad Steam pulled it from their stock...it was $10 at one point.  It looks like they are trying to force people to buy the NWN & NWN2 combo.

The sales strategy for NWN2 has been the biggest pile of stupid ever seen IMO.

I think anyone interested should add their endorsement to the Neverwinter Nights 2 entry on the GOG wishlist indicating that they want GOG to start carrying it.
