One of the best elements of character building in Dragon Age is when your companions disclose information and discuss things that are plausible in a real conversation. When Wynne encounters her adversity and explains to you what is happening to her, the conversation feels organic, largely because it's directly applicable to her magic abilities (the reason she's in your party). Even when Varric refers to Bianca, it cultivates awareness of his role in combat, namely his weapon.

Most of the other companions never talk about, well, their main purpose in the game. I'm not a gamer, so forgive me if I misuse the term, but it's a bit weird to travel around with these skilled fighters (who are in combat a lot) and the only inference you receive regarding this is based on meta-game information. You, the player with the controller or keyboard, know what your companions do in combat, but your player in the game never gets to discuss it with them.

Implementing this doesn't have to be intrusive or contrived. For instance, if you're talking to a companion and they're recounting their upbringing, maybe they can toss in a line or two about how they learned to use a greatsword. If you've switched them to sword and shield, a line afterward such as "But that's not relevant anymore -- I enjoy using the shield now." Companions appraising their recent performances in battle would be even better, although I imagine more difficult due to the sheer variability (not that it'd have to be precise -- such as saying at camp that they're sorry for letting you down if they got injured).

I liked in dragon age origins how you asked people to teach something from their fighting style or magic. I remember always asking morrigan to shapeshift and her not complying :( then in dragon age two asking flemeth to teach me her dragon trick (in jest of course) and her saying I could never be a dragon. :( be cool if your companions taught you a special move from their arsenal.

In a sense they do this when you get the friendship/rivalry bonuses.  So even with the existing system this would just be a matter of throwing in a convo when they first get to the level where the bonus activates.

In DA2 you do get to have conversations with Fenris and Merril about their abilities--Merril's entire sub-plot revolves around her ill-advised use of blood magic.  And, of course, you talk to Anders plenty about him being a possessed mage.  You talk with Izzy about being a pirate captain, which involves her fighting style a bit.  So the only companion you don't ever really talk shop with is Aveline.

I'd like for companions to teach their specializations once again to the pc, like in Origins.

Morrigan will teach her specialization if you have neutral (not sure about negative) approval with her. If she likes you, she won't teach it. I'll get her to teach it first thing once in Lothering.

They'd have to revert to a system where you have to find specializations.  Also, I found this annoying in Origins because depending on where you go first it can be quite late in the game before you get access to some of them, and Blood Mage you can't access at ALL unless you do something that none of my characters would do.  So I wound up reloading a save after I unlocked Blood Mage, and then I never bothered using it ANYWAY, I preferred Arcane Warrior.

I do think it'd be cool if they had some unique status bonuses that you could pick up from companions/quests though, but I prefer having the specializations open.
