Is there a good reason you can't attack while moving?

Because it really makes the combat a lot less fluid and enjoyable.

Did they do all the animations and then go "oh crap, we can't have melee swings while moving with this, but whatever, it's too late to change." It makes melee clunky and awkward and forces them to have dumb stuff like "heavier armor automatically gives threat because with this ridiculous melee system a tank can't actually grab enemies off people".

Sorry if this is something that's been answered before, search didn't turn anything up.

Yes, I think it's dumb. Even RuneScape managed to make you attack and run...

On one hand, this isn't a MMO.

On the other hand, given the wide success of MMOs, I don't see why further MMO emulation is a bad thing. There's a reason they're popular, and let me tell you, it isn't because of the lore.

I love the Dragon Age story and Lore, but the gameplay isn't fluidic. Melee is terrible. My melee characters that I'm controlling stop attacking the moment something takes half a step back. And what's the deal with no target windows? Sheese, even NWN had target windows, and they were a good thing.

In many ways I see Dragon Age a step backwards in gameplay mechanics. Good thing they have the awesome story to back it up, though. :)

yes this is a minus when baddies get knocked back.

I don't see any relation to threat though. Even if you could run and attack at the same time, enemies could still ignore the tank and attack mages.

Threat is a gamey solution to make squishies more viable.

It isn't an MMO, but I don't really see attacking while moving as a feature that should intrinsically be linked to MMO's, even if MMO's commonly use it. As far as I can tell, allowing you to attack while moving wouldn't make DAO more like an MMO...it would just make it better.

Regardless, I was just wondering if the devs ever said anything about why they chose to make it this way and if they had a good reason that I couldn't think of.

Edelwolf, the relation to threat is this: If your tank can actually attack things running toward the casters, he can get threat on them via damage and pull them off the squishies. Since this isn't an option in DAO, they had to put in a gimmicky "heavy armor gives you more threat" system. Now, you're right, this usually isn't an issue...unless you're like me and played a Dual Wield dagger avoidance tank (works really well! massive damage + you're invincible), where threat was a constant struggle because I was wearing light armor!

I think for the next game they should go with something more like The Wticher 2 combat, That right there looks amazing.

Well, on the other hand, when an enemy runs away and you attempt to deliver a "Mighty Blow" it still will count as a direct attack regardless of range, since the system still believes it's near you for some reason.

And yes, I'd like them to have attacks whilst moving, it makes flanking lot more fluid. OOh well~..
