After downloading the 1.02, I made a new mage. After getting to the rage demon and defeating him, when talking to Mouse it stutters...laggs...then freezes. I've never had hardware problems with DA:O and have never encountered this before dl'ing 1.02.
I skipped the conversation as quickly as possible with Mouse...only to have it lag and freeze during the conversation with Jowan.
Is there a way for me to fix this? If not, how do I remove the 1.02 update?
After dl 1.02 patch, conversations slow down then freeze.

Got the same problem at the exact same spot, patch 1.03 though. Runs fine on my 4 years old laptop but not my brand new top-o-the-line gaming laptop.
Also tried human noble origin and had a few freezes there as well.
Anyone had this problem and found a fix?

For both the original poster, now long gone, and the new arrival, let's have a starting point for this, is that all right with you? Include hardware component information, please:
It just amounts to wasted forum space
If anyone complaining about a problem doesn't choose to include data to use for diagnostics, answers just aren't possible. PCs are not *anything* at all like game console systems. OK, perhaps that really isn't new to you, but think how many noobs a big hit game like this attracts. There is almost nothing that is truly "standard" between various branded PCs, making the game developers' jobs very difficult, and requiring that warning labels be attached to game boxes for those games that have serious requirements.
In case you have misunderstood how to evaluate your PC compared to that game box label (and you may believe you do understand, and actually end up being mistaken), we have to start from that point. Please fill it all in (if you have a problem with doing that easily, and are in the DA:O (and ME) Social Site Forums, do a search for "Basics" without the quote marks). Mass Effects 2 includes its own Configuration tools that will reveal the information to you.
Basic Hardware Specification Chart (Empty so far)
Processor Manufacturer: AMD / Intel
Processor Name / Type: Athlon 64 / Pentium / C2D / dual core / quad, etc.
Processor Core Speed: ?.? Ghz (or AMD Performance Number)
Operating System / Service Pack: WindowsXP with SP #?, Win7, Vista ? (Oh, no!)
System RAM: ? ? GBs (MBs, if less than 1024 ? )
Video (GPU) Manufacturer: ATI / Nvidia (only those two are supported, PERIOD), so answer which of
them you have
Video Card Model: (examples) Radeon HD 5670 / Geforce GT 240
Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst ?.? / Nforce ??.?? .
. (use the numbers, not the word "latest")
Video Card onboard RAM: ? ? ? MBs
Sound Card Manufacturer:
Sound Card Model:
(And this is only for the raw hardware variations. Potential software conflicts are far more likely to be game play problems, and developers cannot test for all possible program loads.)

Nah, didn't bother with specifics as after spending 9 hours trying to track down the problem a quick necro here seemed more appropriate. Of course, figured it out 10 mins after posting. Have a good one.

Barash, if you figured it out, could you let me know? I have been having the problem from start. Granted, I'm running on a laptop, but it's a pretty good laptop. I can run most games on Medium-high (including Batman, CoD4 and 5, Fallout 3, and even Crysis at Medium). DA:O runs fine most of the time, but I have the exact same problem when I get to conversation scenes. The mouse freezes, the voices stutter and it seems like the whole game freezes for 60-90 seconds before starting back up. It during roughly half of the conversation scenes. I've tried lowering the settings but it doesn't help.
My specs:
HP Pavilion dv7
Intel Core2 duo t9400 @ 2.53
4GB ram
120GB HD
Vista Home 32
GPU - Geforce 9600M GT (512)
Nvidia High Definition Audio

I heard DAO meets problems running on Vista, and sometimes when it also runs with a dual-core CPU installed.
So, you can't change your CPU as far as I know on a laptop, but you can certainly buy Windows 7 and install it on your machine. Better go with 32-bit, because guess what, most people using 32-bit W7 also meet problems with DA, so yeah.

I tried a friend's copy of DAO on PC after seeing so many complaints about the PC version and low and behold there's the freezing problem on cut scenes....and it isn't just in the fade when you talk to Mouse at the beginning of the Mage origin story, also found it on the Warrior one twice, once when talking to Nan about the dog in the larder (just about got past that, barely) and again when Ser Gilmore is fortifying the front gate and talking to your character (that one I didn't get past, it became unplayable like the Mouse one).
I've read that this also happens on Windows 7....tried it, and it does....and this is on patch 1.04....so not just a Vista problem. Seems to work on XP fine though which leads me to believe it was primarily designed for XP....why make a game for an operating system that's now defunct and no longer suported by Miscrosoft? (supported ended YEARS ago for XP)....a bit out of date, Bioware, hmmm?
(also tried the compatibility settings in Vista and that didn't work....but I didn't honestly expect it to since that isn't usually 100% backwards compatible in my experience)
For me, personally, all these problems means is I'll stick to the 360 versions of Bioware games (funny how I never experienced problems on the 360 versions...oh yeah, duh!, Microsoft would have likely invalidated the 360 license agreement if there were those problems on there....they have pretty strict rules...pitty PC owners aren't granted the same protection).
I'm lucky I got to try a friend's copy and didn't buy it, not that I couldn't have taken it back, but the inconvenience and principle of the thing makes it highly annoying.
I wonder what happened to the days of stability and trust that Bioware had with Neverwinter Nights and KOTOR games....I hope those come back, even if it means Bioware breaking away from EA and going solo again.
If there is a fix for this freeze problem (NOT the patch, that fixes jack and sh*t and jack left town), then I'd appreciate either a private message or, preferably, a reply here (where everyone can see it) as to a link or description of what to do.
Don't waste my time with asking for system specs...I've read up on this problem extensely enough to know it's been plagueing many many systems and set ups, both Intel and AMD, both Nvidia and ATI and various core processors. You don't get that many systems haveing the same problem and continue to blame the customer or the hardware...that wears extremly thin by then.
Thank you for your time...and sorry for the parts where I ranted a little...but it's frustrating when it's a problem that should have been fixed by now considering how long this game has been available to buy.
