This is my first post.  I have never played any of the ME franchise nor do I know the story.
I'm playing this on a PC with Xpadder and an Xboc 360 controller.

I printed the manual and even have the Prima guide but it still doesn't show some simple things.

Questions: How do I use that cool looking blade?  I think it's called an omni blade?
I don't understand how to control a squad.
So far all I've gotten to is the point where there is an injured person, they haven't even gotten to the Normandy yet.  I know they do because I've seen several YouTube walkthroughs but even they assume a body of knowledge about the game I don't have.

I have many more questions that I hope someone will be able to answer and I apologize in advance as I am a complete and total newbie to this game.  Thanks for any help as I really want to play this game.

You really should be starting with the first game, not the third.

Or at least ME2 with the Genisis comic.

Um, yeah. I was thinking about buying them but I'd at least like some help, that's why I created an account here.

FYI, they try to introduce how to do things in some of the single player. When you are near the galaxy map, there is a terminal. That terminal has some lessons in it. They suck, but offer part of what you want. For the blades, if you use the "run" combination of keys along with the melee key, you will do this. Different heavy melee for different characters, though a lot use the blade. So go through the "easy" story, walk by and talk to any character you can to get missions and hints and such. In the end all you can do is trial and error, nobody really put the interface together well in this game so you have to wing it.

Ignore the guy that posted before me because he's not making any sense.

To use the omni blade, you have to use heavy melee as a soldier, infiltrator, engineer, or sentinel. All the classes have different heavy melee attacks. Just hold down 'B' to use heavy melee.

Controlling the squad is pretty easy. You generally have two squadmates, one assigned to your 'left' and one to your 'right.' Use the left button on the D pad and point somewhere to order your squadmate on the left to move there. Point at an enemy and press the left button to order them to attack the enemy. Same thing for the right button.

Use the top button to order both your squadmates to move or attack, and use the bottom to order them to rally to your position.

To answer your question about the ominblade, hold down "F" key. But as to the rest, my suggestion is to go get Mass Effect and play that first (they are available on Steam).

A lot of the game will make more sense when you don't come in the end of it and try to understand about the Reapers (Sovereign), who your teammates are (yes, that does make a difference), Citadel Council, and of course, Conrad Verner, etc.

Thanks, that's a start at least. I'm playing as a sentinal and when I try to melee I don't get that blade, I get some glowing orange thing on the end of my pistol. I just wish I could find a site that shows the different icons on the screen and what they mean. Things happen FAST in this game too.

I've been playing a LOT of Skyrim so this is a huge difference for me.

Thank you, that's some solid advice I can use.  I appreciate it.

Thank you, I was looking on Amazon and they still have them.  I think I might be buying them soon and holding off on playing ME3.

I would definitely hold off. Mass Effect starts off a little slow, but it is worth it a thousand times over.

The third game is a good entry point.

Well, based on all of your generous replies I have just ordered both the first and second from Amazon (I like DVD versions not Steam) and I also bought the Prima guides. I'm gonna totally immerse myself in this game like I did in Skyrim. I spent a lot of time looking into this game before deciding to buy it and so far I like what I see. I love the graphics, the cities are awesome looking, the voice acting is excellent. I know there's been a lot of controversy over the ending and I even saw a YouTube of it. I didn't understand what I was seeing so I can't make a decision whether it's good or bad. All I know is this will keep me busy for a while.

Thanks for your replies.

Jack.

You should know that the combat changes a lot between ME1 and ME2 (and a little between ME2 and ME3). ME1's much more stat-driven and less controlled by player skill, so combat's going to feel very different.

Bioware would disagree.

If possible, please play ME1 and all it's goodness, then ME2 and all it's character goodness-loving-epicness, then play ME3 and react, that's the best way to put it.

Thanks. I looked at some YouTubes on both 1 & 2 and they seem a lot different but no big deal as I want the immersive universe that's Mass Effect. I love the story.

I wonder if I'll be able to find a profile for Xpadder for ME1 & ME2 as I like to use an Xbox controller on the PC. I despise the goofy WASD controls, it's so counterintuitive. I'm really amazed they didn't incorporate this in ME3 as I'm playing Skyrim and Risen 2 and they have it built in. So I bought Xpadder and have a great profile for it and it works just like it should.

I WISH they would make Dragon Age 2 for the PC. I even sent a request but they never got back to me.

It's enough to make me want to buy an Xbox but this PC I built screams and the graphics are stunning. But if Bioware/EA doesn't make more PC games that are available on the Xbox I guess I'll have to buy one.

Lol, just PR nonesense.  Don't worry.  You'll enjoy it, but you'll have a different experience, since you didn't go through the first two.  Have fun though!

You will, dont worry.

P.S. When you get to [spoiler deleted] in ME3, turn off the game. Trust me, it will make the game less painful.

My biggest recommendation would be not to take what a large vocal portion of this community say too seriously. They will sour one of the greatest gaming experiences you will ever have. I envy anyone who is yet to fully experience this series.

Commit to one platform (ideally Xbox or PC) so you can playthrough from the first game and carry over save files. This game is meant to be enjoyed that way.

Yes. I spent quite a bit of time dying in the first few minutes of ME2, so when you get there, definitely look up the controls again, especially for PC, since most of your non-movement keys are different.

Also, the less you know about things going through, the better their reveal is, so try and keep yourself from spoilers from this point on.

Give ME1 a bit of time to get going. It's the first of three acts and tends to be a bit exposition-heavy and more sandboxy than the other two games to allow you to get used to the world. Or, rather, galaxy. And it's a very big galaxy.

Spend time with your squadmates, be careful what you say to reporters, and above all, enjoy. :D
