I'm sorry but why the hell are you playing the third before the first or the second? Did you watch star wars episode six first then start back at one?
If your playing PC then you have absolutly no excuse to not play the first ME first, then second, then third. Get your priorities streght.

Presumably because the third is the best place to start. BioWare told us so.

Back to being serious ME2 and ME3 are fairly similar from a gameplay point of view but 1 is different in many respects, most notably that the combat is rather clunky and the inventory a pain in the neck. Don't let that put you off, it's a great game despite it. I really regret having played 2 first and it really helps to have an idea later about who is who, what is what, and what characters are talking about.

You really should be starting with the first game, not the third.

The third game is a good entry point.

just like starting with the last chapter of a book

HAHAHAHA! I love this!

I too would highly recommend starting with ME1 and ME2. These games are about making choices and many of them are reflected in the storyline of ME3. If you start with ME3, you won't know anything about the background and just shrug. Okay, whatever. If you start with ME1, play through ME2, then you will be all like: hey, I did that! That's awesome! Also, you will be familiar with many of the characters, the background stories and the whole plot up to that point. It really adds to the experience. The previous games are pretty cheap, so, why not? If you really like the game, don't forget to pick up at least the Lair of the Shadow Broker (especially if you like Liara) and Overlord DLC.

As to your questions on how to control your team and such, I think they have already been answered, but I'd recommend simply going to options and checking out the various keys you can use and go from there. Also, when in doubt, use the spacebar, at least in ME3.

@Jackswyr, you can also read the various Mass Effect books and comics to gain more depth to its universe and the wikipedia site has a wealth of information that you won't always pick up on or deduce from during gameplay. I've read up loads of stuff on there and it really helps you appreciate more on what's really going on as you play through the various story arcs in the series. You'll also find all if the info you need on classes, weapons, powers, squadmates, species, planets, characters and missions on there amongst loads of other stuff. I've lost many a lunch break on the wiki site!

Enjoy the 3 games and be prepared to be totally pulled in to it :o) Mass Effect is very addictive...

I'd say you can probably skip the DLC for 1, but the DLC for 2 is almost a must. Lair of the Shadow Broker and Overlord are both very good, and Arrival serves to branch between ME2 and ME3. Worth noting: You can actually purchase the DLC for 2 after you've beaten it, and then run through them. That's what I did.

As for the end... yeah, you may want to wait until the Extended Cut is released, but there are also people out there who were alright with the current ending... so you may simply want to judge for yourself.

Also, the longer this thread goes, the more likely it is to dissolve into spoilers, despite its listed forum category, so do keep that in mind. :D

The final game is the best starting point for a trilogy.

It's short for Extended Cut.

That big stir I mentioned earlier?  It has to do with the ending to Mass Effect 3.  It was bad.  Really, really bad.  Unprecedented, really.  So Bioware is creating an extended ending as DLC to provide "clarity and closure"  Some people think this will fix the ending.  Others are skeptical.  And some think it's totally past redemption.  One way or another, we'll find out this summer.

I keep hearing that it's bad, the worst ever.  Well, I've been playing games since computers first came out in 1980 (yes, I guess I'm ooollldddd) but I still love games.  I've seen some bad games.  I've read some bad story endings in books and who doesn't despise the "it was all just a dream" ending ala Wizard Of Oz, or Bob Newhart?  I'm gonna play it and roll with it good or bad.  Thanks for helping me.

Yup, that's what I'm doing.  I don't just want to play I want to LIVE it.  Can't wait till Monday when the first two games come.  Got them for the PC on DVD from Amazon and they were pretty imexpensive.

Thanks, I will buy the DLC you mentioned above.  You're right, I'm gonna judge for myself.  Good or bad it's still just a game, life goes on.

Everyone who posted an answer to me have been very helpful but I can't figure out if you're serious or if it's sarcasm.  Get out why?  Please be specific why I should get out?  The end?  You make it sound like this game is some kind of contagion or something.  :)

Dunno, it looked good.  I posted above that Monday I will have ME1 & ME2 so now I can play through the entire franchise, also gonna buy the DLC for them too.

Huh?  Why?  I don't understand.  And, what are these changes?

There are enough of us veteran ME fans about, that did not like certain elements of different aspects of the three ME games.

And the elements can vary greatly, for example, I happen to loath the child sequence, the various dream sequences and the ending star-child elements that we get in ME3, which all should become clear enough as you move through ME3, that I hope to not spoil.

Do you mean where the child get killed in the beginning cut scene?  Yeah, I agree, killing kids in real life or even in a game is anathema to me.  But I guess they wanted to make it look r real war and all its horriblness.  Dang, typing on an iPad and I can't see what I'm typing because it goes off the screen.  Oh well.:crying:

Just ignore all the people telling you to run they are just messing with ya. I hope you enjoy the games, I have never been so completly in love with a game series before. If you really want to immerse yourself into this galaxy make sure you read all the in game codex. They tell you alot about the back story of the characters, places, events and what not.

And like somone mentioned before check out the wiki and try and read up a bit on events that took place before the first game.

Also what type of character do you plan on playing? Renegade (bad) or Paragon (good)? And what type of class? I have always loved the Adept (caster) nothing better than picking up your opponets and tossing them around the map =)

Thanks Prizzma, I have been doing just that right now, reading Wiki articles. This game is like living in a book, it's cool, I've always been a big sci-fi fan.

As for character, well I know I want to be a Paragon to begin with but don't know too much about the various classes yet. I have the Prima guide for ME3 and I liked what little I read about the Sentinel. But I'll just have to cross that bridge when I come to it.

This is an awful analogy; nobody should ever start with Star Wars Epsiode I.

I find the fact that so many see them this way disappointing.

Not sure if OP is serious or not but my advice is to not take this series seriously AT ALL and just view it as pew pew fluff with some interesting characters here and there.

Some of the characters are just as bad as the plot though, like the Turian councilor whose sole purpose is to be hated and used as a verbal punching bag by the player.

Yup, I'm the OP and I agree, it's just a game, a very immersive game but a game nonetheless.  Still, I like to escape and this game looks like a great way to escape.  When I played Skyrim I would have dreams about it at night it was so immersive.  I guess we all need to escape reality from time to time.

I found it an awesome series...until the end when nothing really mattered. ME3 is not only the worst of the series but completey ruins the entire series by not givning you any kind of ending.  It's like ending the Lord of the Rings with Frodo falling into the pit of volcanic lava and ending the story there.
