Not sure if OP is serious or not but my advice is to not take this series seriously AT ALL and just view it as pew pew fluff with some interesting characters here and there.

ME characters >>>> ME plot, that is very true.

Some of the characters are just as bad as the plot though, like the Turian councilor whose sole purpose is to be hated and used as a verbal punching bag by the player.

LOL!  Verbal punching bag!  :D

I typically kill the Council; it works much better plot-wise too, as that way you don't have them promising to aid you and then going back on it in the next game.

I find the fact that so many see them this way disappointing.

What do you find disappointing?  That I generalized Paragon and Renegad as good and bad?

Yes. There are plenty of perfectly reasonable and sensible renegade options; like, as I said above, killing the Council. Destroying geth Heretics is another notable one.

Hmm, picking Udina for councilor, sparing the Queen and selling off Legion are best for continuity too. Also it's best to kill off Ashley in ME1 to preserve character integrity.

Thanks again Prizzma.  However, I think it best if I might stay away from this thread because I see a lot of spoilers.

I usually do spare the Queen and kill Ashley. I never picked Udina for counsellor though, as I saw him as a poorly-written joke character whom I spent most of his screentime laughing at. The whole Councillor thing had to be the worst-handled choice in the series; I don't even think Anderson had a throwaway line about quitting or anything, which even the other mishandled choices typically received.

Pretty much all the spoilers posted have been from ME1 and 2; if you're starting with 3, they shouldn't be an issue.

Buy ME1 and ME2. If you can, download Bring Down the Sky for ME1, and ME2 download Zaeed, Kasumi, Arrival, and Lair of the Shadow Broker at the very least, then download Javik for ME3. I personally downloaded EVERYTHING for ME2, but that's just me.

Bioware has this weird fixation with portraying politicians as utter morons and glorying militarism and authoritarianism(while at the same time condemning the Renegade path).

I also find it curious that absolutely nobody in the series questions the Spectres as an institution even after the actions of Saren. I would be downright terrified to live in a state where such a force is legal(or the Justicars for that matter).

Yup, OP here, I posted above that on Monday I will have both ME1 & 2.  Then when I play I plan on buying and playing ALL the DLC.

As for spoilers, well Prizzma mentioned it but since I have NO idea of what all of you are talking about it doesn't really matter anyway.  My mind spins with all the names, races, classes, weapons, choices, man this is one BIG game!  I mean HUGE!  It must have taken a while to learn all this stuff.

Been doing a lot of Wiki research and YouTube viewing.  I can't wait for Monday to start ME1.

You'll get up to speed quickly enough because the game game will just draw you right in and you'll have this urge to find out as much as you can. The characters in these games can seem like real people at times and I consider some of them to be my friends even though I know they're just fiction. I actually care for many of them and that's something I never ever expected would happen. Mass Effect just has that effect on you...

Thanks Sarah, that's exactly what I want to happen.  There's a lot of people in books I read I feel the same way.

I have never fallen for fictional characters before in anything, be it TV programmes, movies, books or games. So when it did happen I was surprised and also delighted. I have been into computers and games since the 80s and 90s on and off but I can't and don't just play any old thing. A game needs to really connect with me so I've always played a few carefully selected games but gotten mileage from them. I'd last seriously gamed about 10 years ago and was tired of the usual "you're a soldier with the best training and weapons and only you can save the world" mantra. I'd start them and get bored after 10 minutes. In September 2010 I acquired a PS3 from the supermarket for £32 via their reward scheme and used it to dabble with GT5 and also play blu-ray discs. Then my other half bought me ME2 for it as a late Xmas gift when it came out. I left it sat around for a week as I thought it was just another "you're a soldier with the best training and weapons bah blah blah" and honestly thought I'd hate it. But, I felt I ought to humour him and so I installed it and started playing. 48 hours later I was totally hooked and I've been a Mass Effect player ever since. I hope it takes you in the same way too...

Sorry for going slightly off-topic but David Silverman should see this thread : you OP, simply by being yourself just proved that Silverman is ... mildly put, misguided.

*He was faimous for shouting day and night that ME3 is the best entry-point to the franchise; also known for the equally faimous "Button Awesome" (but that's about Dragon Age 2)

Anyway, I honestly hope you'll enjoy ME1 and 2. There have been several moments of high tension where I had to make a critical decision and I was simply torn apart by the implications.
How many times in a game do you simply stop and stare blankly in shock, having to decide the fate of others ?
Like others said, countless times before me, you won't regret spending your time on ME1 and 2.

One last thing, you should check CDN too (Cerberus Daily News). It was an in-game news service that was active when Mass Effect 2 was still the latest game : its full of nice little pieces of story.

I began my plunge into the ME universe around the first part of May this year. I began with ME2 and absolutely loved it.  Then, I saw ME1 available on Games on Demand and bought it; started it that very night. It was pretty much a nightmare for me at first; the combat and squad controls were waaaay different, and don't even get me started on driving the Mako (you'll see).  But, by the end of the game, I was already thinking about what class I'd like to try on the next run through on it.  Started as an Infiltrator, because sniping from a distance is awesome. :D

I imported that character to ME2 and the experience was really different than what I had before; new side quests, people mentioning things I'd done in the first game, etc. I completed my second run through ME2 in only 10 days, playing about 4 hours a night.  Now, I kinda miss that old Mako...

I've finally begun ME3 and yeah, I am already totally spoiled to the ending.  I know what happens, but you know what?  I'm like you; it's a game, life goes on, and I can always finalize things in my own head.

As far as any help I can offer, all I can say is dive into it, commit to your Shepard, talk to everyone after every major mission.  In ME1, watch out for Krogans; they are tough if you aren't used to using yours and your squad mates powers efficiently. Watch what you say to Liara or you will find yourself in a romance with her...lol! Learn to love your Mako and take someone with tech powers with you when you have to use it. Inventory and upgrading your equipment can be a pain, but its worth it.  Once you figure out all the crazy clunky stuff of ME1, the next game is a breeze comparativly. You'll find your way pretty easily, more than likely.

Anyway, welcome to the Mass Effect Galaxy!

I don't understand people who play ME3 without starting with ME1 if they know it's a trilogy (which some don't, so that's understandable). You miss so much by starting with the last game...

Again, thank you all for your outstanding advice. I am going to cut and paste many of your posts and print them out and refer to them to help with the complete and total immersion in this game.

This is my first post.  I have never played any of the ME franchise nor do I know the story.
I'm playing this on a PC with Xpadder and an Xboc 360 controller.

I printed the manual and even have the Prima guide but it still doesn't show some simple things.

Questions: How do I use that cool looking blade?  I think it's called an omni blade?
I don't understand how to control a squad.
So far all I've gotten to is the point where there is an injured person, they haven't even gotten to the Normandy yet.  I know they do because I've seen several YouTube walkthroughs but even they assume a body of knowledge about the game I don't have.

I have many more questions that I hope someone will be able to answer and I apologize in advance as I am a complete and total newbie to this game.  Thanks for any help as I really want to play this game.

I have the game on PC. There's a Genesis Comic. BUT, it's better to actually get Mass Effect 1 on Steam. And Mass Effect 2 on Steam.

You're missing out on two incredibly amazing game. IMO stop with Mass Effect 3 and really focus on the first two. If you have questions, just send a personal message to me I'll help you along the way. You're going to really miss out on the experience of Mass Effect 3 if you ignore the first two

just being real man, stop with ME3 and start with ME1 - Steam Network

Hi Seifer, in several posts above I mentioned that on Monday I will be recieving ME1, ME2 DVD's, and both Prima guides from Amazon.  I overnighted them so I'm gonna jump right in as soon as I get them.  ME3 will go on hold till I finish ME1 & any DLC and ditto for ME2.

Thanks for your generous offer for help though, I appreciate it and probably will take you up on it.

You really should be starting with the first game, not the third.

The third game is a good entry point.

<_< just like starting with the last chapter of a book <_<

At least he won't get too invested into the characters to care on how much of a screwed up game it is. Perfect entry point.
