I can't recommend highly enough playing 1, 2 then 3. It's a MASSIVE experience, beyond just some gaming. I'm also an oldie, who has gamed since Space Invaders (1978?) and ME is the best series of my gaming 'career'. I've re-played the game to the point of almost (only almost...) ruining it lol.

Quick question. A long time ago I read that scientists speculated that if there really are sentinent beings out there they would have to have at the very least opposable digits on their hands so they could create tools leading all the way up to space technology. Now the Hanar, jellyfish-like creatures? How in the world did they become spacefaring? Or some of the other races? Sorry, it's just my logical mind working.

well you dont get introduced to space magic untill ME3 so you have to wait a while to find out.

but seriously, id say they just did it with their minds. im cool with hanar being demigods, whatever.

Not sure how the hanar became spacefaring, but they do have help "nowadays". (Details are in ME2)

I don't think it is ever really explained how the Hanar became spacefaring in the first place. It might have something to do with biotics.

In regards to your playthrough of the series, complete every sidequest that you can find. You will be really really surprised by how much is carried over from game to game via imported saves. Make sure you speak to everyone you can find and exhaust dialogue options as much as possible. This is especially true for the people on your ship.

Since you're going down the Paragon route, make sure you do as much Paragon things that you can and level that stat up along with your usual weapon type and armor. Paragon points will actually import into the other games. Save as much money as you can as this also imports somewhat into the next game :).

You find SO much loot in the world that it isn't even funny. Don't worry about buying from shops save for maybe medi-gel upgrades and grenade upgrades in regards to their capacity. Weapons, armor and mods for these things can mostly be found as loot on missions and sidequests. The very best weapons can be purchased in the C-Sec offices. The best armors require a certain license so that they sometimes show up in your own shop keeper on your ship.

Best of luck to you!

Thanks for the excellent advice.  I have been doing just that already and now I know where the best stuff might be.  Cool.

I could give you a plot synopsis and a character biography of the characters that matter, but in all honesty you'd be better off playing it as a trilogy and not a single game. Three really is the worst place to start. As for gameplay it takes a while of getting used to as does any game and the manual should help and if not I'm sure the game teaches you how to play.

Thanks, I've learned the controls and have been having a lot of fun with ME1.  I have ME2 and 3 installed and will only play them after I finish the previous one, importing my Shepard as I go along.

As for a synposis, no, thanks, I like to find out things through interaction with the NPCs and the CODEX.

Before I get into your question I simply must know; what's your Xpadder setup for ME3 on PC? I tried ME2 PC with Xpadder on a PS2 controller and I ran out of buttons! lol

For ME1 I have it set up exactly as the Xbox version except for the DPAD. I found some profiles for ME2 & 3. Haven't played 2 yet so I don't know how much I'll have to modify it. ME3's profile was okay but I modified it and it's exactly like the Xbox version. ME1 is very playable with the controller with Xpadder. It's a brilliant piece of work and there are many different profiles out there for it including PS2 controllers.

Thanks.  I AM enjoying it.  A lot.  I just got use of the Mako and have visited a couple of planets.  COOL!  How in the world do you keep track of where you've been and where you need to go?  Still a lot of fun though and awesome graphics.

Well the universe starts making a place in your head .You will start getting attached to the characters and die to know another golden nugget of some info bout them..Then it gets a bit geeky. :D
I havent had the pleasure of playin ME1..only had Genesis..But From what i know..The mako to get resources was surely a sort of a novelty at first but then became a bit annoying and repititive.
Luckily for you Resource gathering will get simpler and simpler as you go on to ME2 and ME3

Yeah, I heard that about the Mako.  One person said not to get to attached to it though.  Before this game I was on my third run through Skyrim and I actually had dreams about that place.  I didn't get attached to any people, just the scenery and towns.  If I have gotten attached to anything so far it's the Citadel.  I'd LOVE to live there in real life if we had something like that.  What a nice place.

Ah - I'm jealous of you being able to play the trilogy for the first time... Also, the hostility in here about the ME3 ending is really annoying - the series is still amazing regardless (think about it - the series made them care enough to still be here)

And you'll get annoyed by the Mako soon enough! To answer your question about keeping track of where you've been and where you need to go, I don't recommend going to planets you don't have side quests for - I would just go to the planets your side quests tell you to go to and that way the quest system will do this 'tracking' for you. And as for those 'collection' side-quests (you may or may not have these yet but you'll know what I mean when you get them - it's basically collecting, say, 30 medallions from uncharted planets for example) - I imagine actually completing them could drive anybody crazy, so those are usually the only side quests I ignore!

With a paper list! And there are screenshots of the uncharted world maps on a couple of sites online (the wiki and Game Banshee are the ones i've found) that have everything marked.

But I imagine you might not want to spoil yourself with maps. You can search the "in-bounds" area of an uncharted planet in about three sweeps (literally an s-pattern), terrain permitting.

Alex's advice is good, but there is at least one sidequest that you can't get by reading a terminal - you have to go direct to the system to know about it. About "the collection quests": completing a certain one of them does actually have an impact (very slightly!) in ME3. Plus I find them to be a good source of xp and credits. But they do take up a lot of time, especially if you're not using a map.

Just another suggestion
Finish your first playthrough yourself.
DO NOT refer to any guides or such & follow the conversation options that they do.It will really ruin the fun.
Trust me..playing urself and seeing the decisions in the end is very satisfying

Thanks for both of your's advice. I'll take it.

One thing I have noticed which is a pet peeve of mine is the opening locks mini-game. On the Xbox it's differnt but on the PC it's a pain. You have to move a little arrow through rotating blocks. It gets old real fast. They have the same thing in Skyrim with lockpicking. Once or twice if enough but every five minutes? It gets old fast.

The Mako. Cool vehicle but I hope they have some sort of serious protection inside it because if this were a real vehicle the occupants would suffer major injuries. But it's cool. I like it. So far it's been a lot of fun.

Sorry, in regards to the thread title I came here for advice and I like what I see and I like to the game so I'm gonna run to play it.

Why do so many people say run?  If you despise it so much why even come to this forum?  Why not get on with your life, go cut the lawn, take a walk in the woods, play a different game.  It's only a game, there were many games before this and there will be many after this game is a distant memory and people will look back and say, "I thought ME was all that?"  Sorry, I ain't running for anyone dude.

Well some people might be doing it for laughs. Not gonna deny it, I did jokingly tell my boyfriend - who started ME1 for the first time while I was playing ME3 - to 'run while he still could' after I finished the third game and witnessed that ending. But some might think there doing you a favor telling you to get out while you still can.

Personally I think they're annoying. Play the games at your leisure and come to your own conclusions when you reach the end. While I might not have liked the ending I still think the series itself was a worthwhile investment. Besides there are other more important things to worry about.

Thank you, I agree.  I lost my two-year old daughter 17 years ago.  So if I can handle that I think I'm capable of bearing up under a "bad" ending.  I mean if this is all people have to worry about in life then I'd say they have it pretty good.

As for the endiing, I'll reiterate what I said in a previous post.  I have read hundreds of books and some had bad endings and I got over it.  Did I write the author or publisher and complain, no, I moved on to another book.

The writers of this franchise have a right to write whatever they want, it's called artistic license the last time I checked.  If these complainers don't like it then maybe they should program their own game.

Sorry for the rant, just my two cents.

They write to someone, though, and if most of those people are upset, then they do have a right as they paid money for it. The ending of a story is the most important part, as all the lessons, morales and characters are all wrapped up and given closure. It's not fair, because the rest of the entire series is amazing, but it's understandable to see their outrage.

Personally, I think the endings fall short, but I don't let it consume me with hatred so I can't enjoy the game anymore. I still love ME3.

They have a right to the game but not to the ending. That's the decision of the writers. The writers are the artists and they are not beholden to anyone. If people don't like the endings then don't buy any more of their games.

I pay money for inferior products all the time, it's called Made In China. But what can I do?

What really amazes me is how many people take this so seriousely. It's just a game. A G-A-M-E. Isn't there more to life than a game? Even a game with a disappointing ending? What game company can please 100% of it's customers 100% of the time?

The game is the intellectual property of the writers.  No one can claim any damages from an ending they don't like.
