I don't care. Races are aesthetic choices only - really useless in so many ways. One of the most disappointing parts of DAO was that while the origins set up a very individual story the other 95% of the game is so generic it hurts. You'd get throwaway lines about knife ears in 1 out of 1000 conversations as an elf but those dialogs went nowhere so it didn't matter.

I'd rather have a story about an elf where the writers can explore what it means to be an elf in the world of Thedas thanks to their status than be able to pick an elf or human and have the game play out about 99% the same. TW2, for example, was a better game for having a story much more tightly wound to a specific main character. DA2's theory wasn't wrong, the execution was.

Make it mean something or it means nothing to me.

I feel the same way, and feel like they should have done the Grey Warden story somewhere else in the franchise other than first.  It made people think that all races are equal, and that's just not the case.  It needed to be driven home first that this wasn't so.

I think the Dwarf Commoner did a very good job at showing class differences in Dwarven society, while City Elf did an excellent job with dealing with Elven oppression, and Magi illustarted prejudice against mages. The only perspectives missing were a Qunari, Human Commoner, and Chasind. Overall, the Origins provided unique perspectives and introduced the player to Thedas quite well.

I don't think anyone was under the impression that all races are equal. However, the PC was a Warden which gave them a 'don't F**k with me" pass. NPCs did respond to the PCs race and background, they just didn't mention it every five minutes and had to deal with the PC(even if they normally would've hated them) because of the Warden title.

It's pretty clear that being  a Warden trumps your race with regards to how people view you. Not sure where anyone could pick up all races being equal up from since DA was very clear in how various races were treated. Even different classes within the same race like the Dwarf Noble/Commoner.

Of course because if you played more than one orgin in DAO(hell if you did one complete playthrough), you know it is impossible to draw that conclusion. The most common argument against origins can also be used to justify removing gender and class selection(see last page).

It's not something I would think, having run all the origins at least once, but, as you said, being a Warden trumped whatever origin you ran, and this throughout the majority of the game.  They did a really good job in the origin of giving you a taste, but after that, once you became a Warden, and got the "Get out of Origin Free" card, the PC was treated basically the same across the board.  This was great, for being a Warden, and is exactly how it should be, which is why I feel like starting with both origin stories, and being a Grey Warden were bad calls, or at least, left some with the feeling that race was just cosmetic, and not something that was paid a lot of attention to, despite how they started.

This is why I feel like, if they are going to give us race selection, I want it to matter.  I would just as soon have one race, if all the races are going to wind up being treated exactly the same, barring, of course, a position, Seeker/Warden etc that would demand otherwise.  Of course, I wouldn't expect to see any dwarven seekers either, since it is a religious organization, although I suppose it could be done w/out too much handwaving.

It is true that simply being a Warden confers some authority and prestige, but the different origins were reflected at various points throughout the game, particularly when the Warden returned to his/her place of origin.

Even if those differences were few and far between, the way the world reacts to the character is only part of the equation.  The other part is how the character reacts to the world - which, for me, is the entire purpose of role-playing.  This part of the equation is supplied by the role-player, not the game (although the game does provide an interface to indicate the character's response to the world.)

The origins did, the rest of the game glossed over it. Put another way, if you removed the origins you could get the exact same game for all 3 races if you blink too fast and miss the callback when you return to your origins.

Think about it this way: a 1950's RPG set in the world of American sports could have a black and white player having very different backgrounds but once they "make the team" even though they have special status the game  should certainly not play out 95+% the same. You can't toss racial selection into a game like that w/o dealing with it some some meaningful way. DAO proposed to set us into just such a world and then walks away from that setup because you are "on the Warden team". Racial selection in AD&D worlds or TES games where race means nothing other than height and weight is fine..they don't claim those issues so if the story goes generic so what? DAO promised more and failed to deliver on it.

Yes but the world can't be blind deaf and dumb to you most of the time. My character has a reaction to the world but a lot of how my City Elf reacted to the world was built on the actions I saw in the origins part of the game. It made me mad, it made me resentful. That rage and resentment feels empty when it seems to occur in such isolation to the rest of the story.

I understand that it may have felt like the opportunities to integrate it into the story were few and far between, but I would expect that you could use that as a motivation for a lot of the choices that Warden made, no?

And I'm certainly not trying to suggest that DAO couldn't have done some things better than it did - only that I felt the different origins created some additional layers of depth in the way I experienced the game.

I completely agree – the origin stories in DA:O stirred my imagination, and inspired me to come up with mini-stories about my character's relationships, upbringing and motivations. While there were things that could have been improved on, the origin stories added a lot for me in terms of making my Wardens feel like real and unique people.

The origins influenced the rest of the game. A human noble gets unique dialogue with several characters, not to mention what happens in the epilogue. The same can be said of every other origin. Not to mention that the origins influenced the PC's attitude.

DAO didn't fail at all. The PC did have different perspectives depending on origin. Human nobles didn't get yelled at by the quartermaster in Ostagar, Mages get teated with suspicion by the mayor of Redcliffe, and non-Dalish are recieved coldly by the Dalish.

BTW, your analogy falls short. It's more like a 1950's RPG were Blacks join a government agency that gives them complete immunity and that everyone has to deal with them or suffer major consequences.

Actually, no.  Because I wanted nothing more than to let Denerim burn before killing the Archdemon on my CE.  There was no option to do so.  My Dalish wasn't far behind with the same opinion.  I felt no motivation to prevent Denerim being destroyed, other than the story forced me into it.  To me, that would have been the ultimate Karma for the things I endured in the CE origin, especially playing as a female.

A Blight isn't that big a deal for Dwarves, they deal with darkspawn daily, what was my motivation there?  Forced into it by the story.  I've already commented, either here or elsewhere, about how it would have been nice to tell all the treaty races to work out their crap, and send an army, and then go play grab ass with an LI in party camp until everybody showed up.  Of course, that would have made for a very boring game.  The same holds true for the Landsmeet, either give me control of the army, or burn, since I have my army at the ready, and I can just as easily come in and clean up after the Blight runs it's course in Denerim.  As a CE, it would have been especially gratifying to tell Anora, either kill your father for betraying Cailin, or you can all fall to the Blight.  It wouldn't have been so much the betrayal of Cailin, as much as he left me to die as well, and then sold my people into slavery to finance his civil war, fighting over the cottage while it burns down around him.  None of them are options, and yet, the motivation for these actions, or inactions, was certainly there.

Ugh.  You really took my response out of context, but I'll try to reply.

Your complaint addresses the limits on character agency inherent in most games, DAO included.  The character's motives for which available option is chosen can be influenced by that character's origin - which was the point I was trying to make.  Also - different characters can choose the same option for very different reasons.

A Blight isn't that big a deal for Dwarves, they deal with darkspawn daily, what was my motivation there?

For what, exactly?  Which LI to romance?  Whether to save or destroy the circle?  Motivations vary depending on the particular choice to be made.

I've not yet played a dwarf noble, but for the dwarf commoner, becoming a Warden is a chance to escape the life of a castless throwaway in deep doo with Dust Town's crime ring and build a whole new life.

The rest of your post was more griping about lack of character agency and the limited options provided by the game.  I agree that more options would have been nice, yet I still found it possible to role-play different origins even with those restrictions.  The origins added a great deal to the game for me - sorry it didn't work out that way for you.

Just my own unsignificant point of view of the matter of race option here........

If this is something that is implemented (hell yeah Posted Image but that aside) it would only mean something if that would have some sort of meaning to the story overal....

As the possibility exists to import game save data to the next installment things will even get more complicated..

The only way this can be solved is to have a greater time difference between the stories in the franchise. The choices made will matter but the character involved is not 'present' (meaning present in terms of being significant, being very young or even not born yet)  in the years that involves DAO and DA2

As been established in the franchise, ages last for 100 years. DAO and DA2 are between year 30 and 40 (round and about) in the Dragon age era;  this leaves 60 years........Hmmmm

I think you mean a Kossith. Anyone can be a qunari. Tallis is qunari. The elven fugitives convert and become qunari. Qunari simply means one who adheres to the teaching of the Qun.

I wouldn't object to beeing a Qunari(Religion) at all. Would be a great origin IMO

In the Heat of the Night had Poitier as a police homicide detective Tibbs from Phildelaphia. It did not give him plot shield from the racism . In fact the reason why he was picked up in the first place by the police was because they thought he had committed the crime because he had a substantial amount of cash in his pocket. Also thoughout the movie he was constantly reminded that he was a black man in a racist southern town.

The reason why he is asked to head the investigation is because the wife of the murdered man (both were Northernerss) was impressed by Tibbs ability to clear another man who also had been picked up for same crime. The only reason why the Police chief accepted Tibbs was because he was under orders from the mayor to do so.
The reason for that was the woman's husband was going to build a factory in the town. She threaten to stop construction unless Tibbs lead the investaigation.

The only reason why Tibbs agreed was because he was ordered to by his superior. In effect the superior loaned Tibbs to them. The superior accuse Tibbs of being prejuiced for not wanting to help them.
That is why they worked with Tibbs. It had nothing to do with governmental agency's giving a shield. As far as that town was concerned he was still a black man first and everything else second.
The point is that he won the respect of the people he work with to the point that the Police Chief was carrying his suitcase to the train to see him off.

Tibbs did not have the plot shield that was afforded the PC in being the warden.

I don't think race option is a must for DA3 but it would really be nice to have the option to be anything other than human. I know some people will only play as humans but that can get very boring. I loved being able to play an elf and a dwarve in DA:O. It brought something new and exciting to the table. If you have to be a human for story purpose of DA3 then so be it otherwise...yes please on other race options.

In the Heat of the Night had Poitier as a police homicide detective Tibbs from Phildelaphia. It did not give him plot shield from the racism .

Would not being assigned to an investigation give him a "plot shield" were he would be allowed to continue the story of investigating the murders?  As oppose to be just any person of color investigating them and dealing with racism?  His badge, along with his assignment, gave him the immunity to do a job.  If anyone tried to interfere or outright stop him then they would be guilty of impeding an officer during an investigation and face arrest themselves. I believe that qualifies as giving him "complete immunity and that everyone has to deal with them or suffer major consequences."

. The only reason why the Police chief accepted Tibbs was because he was under orders from the mayor to do so. The reason for that was the woman's husband was going to build a factory in the town. She threaten to stop construction unless Tibbs lead the investaigation.

And the last time I checked, being mayor or a police chief was a public office which still qualifies as a "government agency".  And that government agency gave him the authority to move along in the plotline of investigating the murders.  Sure he won the respect of the townspeople and the local police department, but without that authority given to Tibbs they would not have worked with him in the first place.

Tibbs did not have the plot shield that was afforded the PC in being the warden.

And as I have shown that a government agency gave him complete immunity and that everyone had to deal with him or suffer major consequences.

I'll grant you that my examples are extreme, but they are extreme for a reason; to demonstrate just how much freedom we really didn't have.  While I agree, the origin did add a great deal to each individual playthrough, once you completed Ostagar/Lothering, it really didn't matter all that much.  There were a handful of references peppered throughout the rest of the game, but basically, everyone was a Warden after that, and people don't treat Wardens like they treat Elves, or Mages.  Note that while I would have liked to have the options I mentioned, I understand fully why they weren't there.  It would have made for a very dull game.

So if we're going to be given an oppurtunity to play the other races, I would like that choice to matter every bit as much as what class I decide to play, more than some *mage*.  If it's just going to be "look, I'm an elf", then no thanks.  The genereal population treats elves every bit as bad as the Templars treated mages in Kirkwall, yet in Kirkwall, that wasn't acknowledged, other than some random party banter when you enter, and Merrill's initial reaction upon arriving, and her dialogs in Act I.  Sorry, but that doesn't enrich the story, but cheapens the setting.  All races are not equal in Thedas, and that needs to be acknowledged, not just given a nod for the first hour or so, and then discarded as inconvenient to driving the story forward.

It sure looked to me like Denerim was already burning when the Warden & armies arrived - and we did have the opportunity to keep the horde from overrunning the alienage.  That said, I don't think saving Denerim was the point or purpose of the final battles.  My understanding (or interpretation) is that the Warden didn't really expect to defeat the entire horde with those smallish armies, especially after having seen their numbers at Ostagar.  The goals were to 1) Try to defeat the Generals before they made their way to the Archdemon, and 2) Get the small party of 4 to the Fort to slay the Archdemon.  The other troops were there to create a diversion and pave the way for the small party to reach the Archdemon.

I'll grant you that my examples are extreme, but they are extreme for a reason; to demonstrate just how much freedom we really didn't have.

That's a problem with character agency in general, not origins.

While I agree, the origin did add a great deal to each individual playthrough, once you completed Ostagar/Lothering, it really didn't matter all that much.

This is where we disagree.  My different Wardens saw things through very different eyes and reacted to the world in different ways.  There was no VA or animated avatar dictating the Warden's personality, how s/he delivered the lines, facial expressions, gestures, or posture.  That part of the equation - how the character sees and reacts to the world - is for the player to provide.  The game also reacted to the Warden's origin in some places, but apparently not as much as you would have liked.

There were a handful of references peppered throughout the rest of the game, but basically, everyone was a Warden after that, and people don't treat Wardens like they treat Elves, or Mages.

Yes, and we were shown that in one of the opening sequences, where Duncan was explaining previous blights and how all of the races banded together to defeat them.  Once you joined, you were first and foremost a Warden.  Because it is consistent with the lore, it didn't stretch my suspension of disbelief, although I understand that YMMV.

So if we're going to be given an oppurtunity to play the other races, I would like that choice to matter every bit as much as what class I decide to play, more than some *mage*.  If it's just going to be "look, I'm an elf", then no thanks.

On this we agree.  I tried a DA2 playthrough as a mage, but just couldn't get past the ridiculous amount of plot armor that mage Hawke was given in Kirkwall.
