I have to say that during my first playthrough I was shocked when I came to Orzammar for the first time. Before playing DA:O I had read Lord of the Rings, played WoW (forgive me, it was a phase - it passed) and needless to say upon encountering my first Dwarf in this game I was shocked to find that they didn't possess a faux-Scottish accent they weren't [all] drunkards and they were generally quite intelligent. Contrast that to Tolkeins Dwarves who are almost exclusively male (even the females have beards!) and are smiths/miners to trade, loved their ale and didn't seem that you could hold down much of a conversation with them. WoW's Dwarves are a joke really, don't get me started on them.

But my point is, that it is refreshing to see a new take on a generally clichéd subject. DA's Dwarves are far removed from other literary examples. I admit to being unsure about them at first, especially with their North American accents, but I really have warmed to them. Especially after playing both Dwarf origins.

So kudos to BioWare, in my view, for not reading from the same hymnsheet as every other developer.

In WoW's defense, they gave the Female Dwarves an awesome default personality.

Their /flirt and /silly messages are hilarious.

"I'd like to see you in a kilt."

"I won't fall for any bad pickup line. You've got to try 2 or 3 at least."

"I'll have you know I can flatten steel with my thighs."

"I like my ale like I like my men: Dark and rich."

"I give myself a Dutch oven pedicure every night. I've got no foot fungus at all. My toes are pristine."

I do like the Dwarves of DA:O, very much so, and Oghren is quickly becomming my favourite companion for his personality. Oh how I wish there was an Oghren romance. Even if he ended up being racist and would only go for a Dwarf, I'd totally make a Female Dwarf just to sample the stout red ale of Oghren.

Though it would be funny to see him express affection toward an elf or human.

...And if you were also romancing Leliana. His confrontation could totally reference Branka and Hespith and be so amusing.

I'd say that shows little understanding of Tolkein's dwarves.  I especially find it interesting that you think Tolkein's dwarves "love their ale".   Where does that come from?   Hobbits love their ale in Tolkein, not the dwarves.  They also have women, but they are only 1/3 of the population rather than the 50-55% of the population with humans.  Women in general don't have much role in Tolkein's tales outside of home (Eowyn and Luthien are the exceptions) and none of the tales are set in a functioning dwarf community.

I'm not saying you need to like dwarves or anything, but you ought to at least base your dislikes on facts.  And Oghren is about as stereotypical of the "Fantasy dwarf" as it gets:  Drunken berserker warrior with a big axe is a unique take on the race?

Slightly off topic: do Alistair/Zevran and Leliana have any arguments like Leliana and Morrigan?

Slighlt more on topic: yus, the dwarves rock, though I still long for one with a jamacan accent

As far as I can recall there is only one mention of a female Dwarf in the entire LotR trilogy. Correct me if I'm wrong. ::)And regarding the ale, though it has been a few years since I last read the books I do recall mention of Dwarven drinking.

Hence the "[all]" in the OP. ;)

Yes, only one dwarf woman is mentioned by name in the books.   Of course, we never visit a dwarf community, ever.   How many Beorning women are mentioned?  How many Rohirrim women?  Any Northern Dunedain women besides Aragorn's mother?

Tolkein is pretty clear that women in his world don't fight.   Eowyn is an exception and her portrayal is half heroine/half mental patient.

If you can find any mention of dwarves and ale that even implies dwarves drink notably heavily, I'd be happy to acknowledge it.  I don't believe it exists, though.

Considering that everyone in Orzammar hates him for being a drunken berserker, yeah, it does bring a bit of freshness to the old mold. The joke is that Oghren is a total stereotype, but one that the dwarves at large don't appreciate one bit.

If you want an interesting take on Dwarves... try Dwarf Fortress ;)

bay12games.com/dwarves

Yes, it's ASCII, and that's OK!

And keep in mind how the reasons of Oghren being a drunkard differentiate from others of the stereotype.

I initially saved Orzammar for last because I figured it was just going to be stereotypical Dwarf stuff and I wasn't completely interested in that. I was quite wrong though, and Orzammar is basically my favorite part of the game because it's so very rich and intriguing. I'll save it for last again, but this time because it's so good that I want to save it for later. :)

LOL, havent you had the various intercompanion idle chats between Ogren and any of the ladies in the party?

As far as I remember, he asked Lil whats under her cassock, leers at Morrigan such that she actually complains, and has mentioned to Wynn that he doesnt find Older women offputting :)

As far as I can tell, he'll make a pass at anything female.  Though that at least puts him one up on Zev who'll make a pass at anybody breathing :)
