Why use Sheploo?

Why do you use the default male Shepard when playing ME?
I have played ME and ME2 as both male and female shepard and ME3 - once - as male shepard and I could never in a million years see myself using the default male Shepard model (ie Sheploo). The character customization tool is pretty unforgiving (esp when creating a maleShep) but that is time I GLADLY spend doing and redoing my male shep compared to using Mark Vanderloos likness. I mean COME ON! Shepard is suppossed to be this bad-ass, supersmart Commander, not some dimwitted, dutch photomodel. If I am in need of some airhead to suck in his cheeks, prance around on the catwalk, give audience the "blue steel"-look (patented by Zoolander) and sell underwear, sure I'll give Mark Vanderloo a call. But if I want someone to save the galaxy? No... just, no.
Bioware has NO problem using real people to be the basis for their characters so why didn't they use someone that look masculine AND smart when they created the default maleShep. Mark Vanderloo - with his neanderthal look - undoubtedly has the masuline part down but he also look like someone who writes" X" when asked to sign his name on a document. I would say that he look as smart as Coco the monkey but that might actually be an insult to Coco. She knew sign language after all, something I seriously doubt Sheploo... I mean Mark Vanderloo does. I personally would have used someone like Guy Pearce to be the model for Shepard. Someone who seems to have a brain behind his eyes.
I have problem even looking at the guy so to spend 200+ hours with his likness. I dont think so. Please tell me your resons for using - and liking - him. And don't give me the "I'm a lazy bum that can't be bothered to invest in the games I play"-excuse, I want REAL answers.

You can't tell how smart someone is from how they look. Maybe he should have been wearing glasses?

Slightly longer answer: To me playing default Shepard means playing the real, canon Shepard. The rest are all fakes, or delusional people thinking they can be Shepard in their dreams, then hugging their pillow as they close their eyes thinking they are sleeping with Liara or Tali.
Disclaimer: I said "to me". It doesn't have to feel the same for you. I'm happy thinking as I think and you're not gonna change my mind.

I actually quite like his appearance and I found many of the male face models to look very strange indeed.
I think he fits the role of Shepard nicely.

Really, the male creation tools in this franchise are godawful, not to mention that Sheploo's face is higher rez than the customs.

I customized the face on my female playthrough though, ME1 and 2's default female faces were too generic and 3's was downright ugly

I beleive you a projecting traits over Shepard that were not designed by the character development guys. First of all, you are saying : "Shepard is suppossed to be this bad-ass, supersmart Commander".
Bad ass, yes. Supersmart, never. He is supposed to be an inspiring, uplifting, skilled and charismatic soldier.
The rest of his personnality is blank enough for the players to project over him their own interpretation of a hero.
As such, I beleive Mark Vanderloo's looks has got what it takes to fulfill the inspiring, uplifting, skilled and charismatic soldier persona.
If you want to give your Shepard a custom personnality, this is why they allowed you to customize your character's appearance. For instance, my Shep looks a little smarter and smirkier than default, which fits both the way I play him in the cutscenes (a duty-abiding smart-arse) and the French voice over which I played with.

For my part, I have no interest using that Dutch underwear model.

Well, I dont think he's fine as is, he looks plain DUMB and it seems to me that Bioware also shares this sentiment. Throughout the course of the series they've steered more and more away from Mark Vaderloos face ( in ME1 he looks just like Mark in ME3, not so much) and the ONE thing hey've improved is that they made him look more coherent and smart. You don't need to put glasses on a char to make him look smart but to give him no forehead, low brow and cheekbones that extend 10 cm out from his face is a good recipe to make him look like a big, dumb ape
??
Sheploo has had the same general look for all 3 games.
Are you really implying that he has no forehead and a low brow? Have you seen Sheploo before?

But I agree, I'd rather be a character I made and feel is intelligent, and capable. Your suggestion of Guy Pierce is perfect, I always thought he would make a perfect Shepard, I even tried to make my Shepard's look like him a couple of times and have gotten damned close.

My FemShep is my own creation therefore she gets a custom look. Also the default FemShep is ok but nothing special in ME1/2 and outright horrible in ME3.
