Initially in ME1 because I just wanted to start playing the game and didn't really care. Then on the next run gave up on changing it because the face editor was painful. After ME1 I'd just gotten used to it and it's now Male Shepard in my brain.
I stuck with the editor & Fem shep got remodeled to take off the make up as much as I could. Just doesn't seem right that a hard ass N7 would go into battle with stuff that could get in her eyes. Or without a helmet. It ain't fitting, it just ain't fitting.
Why use Sheploo?

I find the CC is lacking in the Mass Effect games. Plus, I think the default male looks great for the role of "military hero who saves the galaxy."

I personally, can't use a default in RPGs, but it depends on what they offer for the protagonist and in terms of customization - Geralt or Jensen, I'm fine - since they have a defined look, but if I was able to change how they did look, I would.

Sheploo looks badass and the voice fits well. He is on all the posters, boxes etc, so it feels like I'm playing the canon shep.
The custom options are horrible, so that made the decision easier as well.
Edit: Mark Vanderloo isn't some dumb cave man btw, he speaks 5 languages and studied history in Amsterdam I believe, not sure if he graduated.
