Why use Sheploo?

Ever since then, I chose Sheploo for nostalgic purposes.

Really, the male creation tools in this franchise are godawful, not to mention that Sheploo's face is higher rez than the customs.

While I agree with you that it is hard to make a good Male Shepard because of the selection of eyes and noses, it certainely isn't impossible. Of the three Shepards I have made, two of them have actually turned out better than how I liked them in the Character Editor. And the third I still like although he wasn't what I expected. It just takes time to make a good one.AndreasShepard wrote...
The custom creator for males is seriously lacking in choices to make a decent looking Shepard. The selection of eyes and noses are all pretty terrible which makes it impossible to get a Shepard looking anything close to as good as Sheploo does, and I don't mean just a sexy standpoint I mean they don't look properly human, something is always off while Sheploo has a genuinely believable face that's very expressive and Meer's voice matches perfectly.
It's sad that ME3 character designs aren't on the level of a game like Saints Row where you can have almost complete customization of your characters build and face. I can also imagine making a horrifying disturbing Shepard would be even easier then

Maybe his lip-synching/character animation is better because he's the 'model' shepard.
He's a good looking guy
More likely than these two however, because once you f*** everything up at the end... well hey, at least it didn't look like you.

They picked a fine model for the military-man look.

Second reason is that I simply can't see myself using another Shepard as I feel Sheploo IS Commander Shepard. I mean, his likeness is on the cover of all the games. A customized Shepard wouldn't feel authentic to me.

I'm terrible with the character creator but I was able to find some codes from the faces database and just tweaked it a bit.

Seriously, my first one ended up looking like a Jewish fishmonger. Totally not my intention. My second one came out looking like William Hague, which was even worse. So I gave up.

No, really, I think he as a unique face for a male model, he looks kind of sad even when he's not actually acting (kind of like Sylvester Stallone, look at this if you don't believe me) and I always find him quite outside the stereotype, even if he can look like the classic buzzcut military hero at first sight. He's like the male Milla Jovovich: looking good, but in his own way.
(disclaimer: I know Milla is a far better actor than Vanderloo, I was just talking about her/his looks).
He also fits in the role, and that's kind of what makes more difficult for me to create an appropriate femShep: I'm not very good with the editor and usually search for codes, but people tend to create FemSheps that looks too pretty and young for a war vet.
EDIT: also, over the course of Mass Effect 2 I think the ability of Shepard to look and epic and then completely dumb the moment later is unmatch. He's the perfect comic relief sometimes and he doesn't even know it.

I mean COME ON! Shepard is suppossed to be this bad-ass, supersmart Commander, not some dimwitted, dutch photomodel. If I am in need of some airhead to suck in his cheeks, prance around on the catwalk, give audience the "blue steel"-look (patented by Zoolander) and sell underwear, sure I'll give Mark Vanderloo a call. But if I want someone to save the galaxy? No... just, no.
I totally agree with you OP. I can't stand Sheploo. My Shep looks a bit like a mix between the Doomguy and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Like the true badass he is supposed to be.
Imagine my rage when Bioware hijacked my creation in ME3 and made him cry like a little **** over a dead kid.
