When I try creating my own custom male shep face I often end up with a face that looks "ok" in the creator. But as soon as I see the face in a cut scene it suddenly looks like he's Diana Allers twin brother or something.

LOL, that's my problem too.  It took me about 30 tires to get the one I posted.  I like it but I still like the default too.

That's because ME3 has a weird shader effect that's likely not on in the character creator, that seemingly only exists to make all the characters look terrible.
The game looks just fine without it (at least on the PC version, upon loading a game you'll see about 2-3 seconds with it off before it kicks in).
I wish I knew a way to turn it off. Well, if I still played ME3 of course.

I think people don't understand how to use the custom character thing. I've only had ONE Shep who didn't look as good as I wanted him to look and that's cuz I miscalculated the droopiness of the eyes. Outside of that, my Sheps look good. ::looks lovingly at Ace Shepard to the left::

Personally I've always thought your one there is cute. Maybe it's the Zorro-stache..

Anyway... I've made good looking characters out of far, far worse character customisers than this one (Oblivion I'm looking at you) so I've never found it very hard either.
Well that and I try about 20 times before I get a face just right. Also, never ever use the opening cutscene of Mass Effect 1 as a gauge of anything, that scene is guaranteed to make any Shep look terrible due to a voodoo curse, or something.

OMG, Oblivion....worse charactrer creator EVER. The Redguards are clearly supposed to be Black people and they just end up looking orange. And then every other group just looks yellowish green for kno reason....

I believe Redguards are based on Middle-Eastern people.

Yeah and if you dare try and play around with the skin tone too much... congratulations! Your character now has weird grey stains on their neck, chin and nose area that will never go away ever.

No, they're definitely black. They just get a lot of middle-eastern vibe in their culture too (but then, so do the Khajiit).

Maybe in Skyrim but in Oblivion, it's pretty clear they're the black group. They're the "best natural fighters", "they dont like magic", and the voice actors sound black.

Come on....that's a black guy.

I prefer his badass leather jacket.

He's gotta look smooth for Miranda.

I use the hoodie.

I might as well since I bought the Collector's Edition.

But I use the Orange Vest in ME2.

He looks good for Miranda just standing there.

At lease MINE does.

I like the Leather jacket and Hoodie too, but on this Shepard I wanted to use something different so I found the way to enable the red uniform.   :D

The discoloration does work in your favor if you use an Argonian. I love making mine blue or white.

All the ladies fall for the dope ass swag. Believe me.

But my Shepard has eyes for one lady though, and she has blue eyes.

Sheploo IS the true canon Shepard in my eyes. When I'm doing my main playthrough, default is the way to go. Everything else is just fan fiction or a side project.

I could never get into the hoodie. The pants just look too stupid. The jacket itself looks good.

If the hoodie had, say, the jeans that comes with the leather jacket, then it wouldn't be a problem.

I don't think Miranda cares.

It's not like she's in a position to talk about how people dress.

LOL

It's more a factor of Shepard caring. It's his clothes.

But he also likes the way Miranda dresses...

It can depend on the woman. Believe me. They want the man they're with to look nice. Miranda has never been in a real relationship with anyone really, so I don't think she cares.

I saw it more of putting my money to good use.

Although, as a Vanguard, I should be using a Shotgun, and that N7 Crusader is pretty bad ass.

But, no, I don't think my Shepard has an issue with the way Miranda dresses either.

I never knew who Mark Vanderloo was until I heard he was the face of Default Male Shep, so I honestly associate the face more with Mass Effect than the real man. Also, as the default face, it is higher definition than anything the character creator can make, as it was all put together as a whole rather than by smushing a bunch of different parts together and hoping for a decent-looking face (if that makes any sense).

I used the default Male Shepard because the choices in the other games were limited and none of the combinations I tried seemed to make a difference.

I would think she cares. She wouldn't want Shepard dressing in drag like Anthony Perkins in Psycho.
