Taking a break from the ongoing ending/IT/EC-disussion I have a question for you ME-players. I know this probably have been disussed on other threads buy frankly I can't be bothered to look them up so here goes:

Why do you use the default male Shepard when playing ME?

I have played ME and ME2 as both male and female shepard and ME3 - once - as male shepard and I could never in a million years see myself using the default male Shepard model (ie Sheploo). The character customization tool is pretty unforgiving (esp when creating a maleShep) but that is time I GLADLY spend doing and redoing my male shep compared to using Mark Vanderloos likness. I mean COME ON! Shepard is suppossed to be this bad-ass, supersmart Commander, not some dimwitted, dutch photomodel. If I am in need of some airhead to suck in his cheeks, prance around on the catwalk, give audience the "blue steel"-look (patented by Zoolander) and sell underwear, sure I'll give Mark Vanderloo a call. But if I want someone to save the galaxy? No...   just, no.

Bioware has NO problem using real people to be the basis for their characters so why didn't they use someone that look masculine AND smart when they created the default maleShep. Mark Vanderloo - with his neanderthal look - undoubtedly has the masuline part down but he also look like someone who writes" X" when asked to sign his name on a document. I would say that he look as smart as Coco the monkey but that might actually be an insult to Coco. She knew sign language after all, something I seriously doubt Sheploo... I mean Mark Vanderloo does. I personally would have used someone like Guy Pearce to be the model for Shepard. Someone who seems to have a brain behind his eyes.

I have problem even looking at the guy so to spend 200+ hours with his likness. I dont think so. Please tell me your resons for using - and liking - him. And don't give me the "I'm a lazy bum that can't be bothered to invest in the games I play"-excuse, I want REAL answers.

So a person's intelligence is determined by their appearance? Right.

Because no faces I make seem to fit the voice, and I always find something that bugs me about it after playing for a few hours.

This is the biggest reason why I used Sheploo for my canon Shepard. The voice matches Sheploo better than most customs, IMO.

Also I don't like most peoples' custom Shepards. They mostly either look like dorks that aren't believable as commandos, or are too gruff or ugly that it would kill suspension of belief during romance dialogue / scenes.  That isn't to say that all customs are bad.

I thought whoever made this custom Shep did a decent job. I think the voice fits the character, and the character neither looks like a dork or someone who would send Liara running away screaming. Image IPB

Sheploo is the best. Deal with it.

Well, I used it for one male Shepard and created something new for two others. I did find the face editor in ME1 for male Shepards problematic - did anyone else think that some of the default faces made him look a lot older than the character is supposed to be, at least in the editor?

The ME character creator was inferior to the DA character creator. I tried using it many times but every Shepard just looked fake and plasticy. Sheploo on the other hand looks miles better than any custom Shep.

Because I got tired of playing Shepards that look okay 50% of the time, awesome 10% of the time, and OH MY GOD MY EYES!!1! the other 40% of the time...

So Sheploo wins by default.

Heroes appear in unlikely packages, the look of default shepard in ME2 and 3 seems to work.

Default Shepard is as boring as brown shoes. Kaiden is more interesting, but suffered from being dull as well. Not that I would know beyond ME1 about Kaiden, because he got himself dead.

Interesting male characters are more like Joker, the Illusive man, even Bailey is more exciting than standard Shep man. Sheploo would make a perfect CIA agent. Nobody would notice him. Unfortunately, he makes an awful protagonist, from a visual standpoint.

sorry to those i may offend, but Sheploo looks to much like a terrorist to me. I prefer to use the custum face I first made when I first poppoed in ME1. Now i cant use any face but the one I made. I would use him as my avatar if i knew how.

Of course. You can't be smart AND good looking.

Note: That is a joke.

The brooding look that Sheploo has is pretty decent for a smart, tough Alliance soldier.

He doesn't look like a scientist, but he isn't one. He's Alliance military, and he looks the part. He also doesn't look stupid in the least.

I think one of the best things I could say about Sheploo is that he fits Mark Meer's voice well and looks the part he's supposed to play.

Because every time I try to make a male face that is even remotely interesting, it comes out looking like a potato. I don't know about you, but I really don't feel like playing as potatoshep.

I started with Sheploo because I suck at making custom characters. After playing ME:1 and exploring the customization options, I just couldn't make the 'right' Shepard that fit Mark Meer's voice. When I role play, I don't necessarily need to make my own character; I canon perfectly with defaults, but I would only customize if the default didn't match the voice/tone of the series----in this case, Shepard, for me, fit perfectly well with Vanderloo. Shepard doesn't look completely like Vanderloo, just like how Costa doesn't look exactly like Kaidan; they tweaked the face a lot and made him look more stoic and he has signs of stress from his military life---especially in his eyes. In general, the default face tends to synch better with the voice and his eyes are just beautiful, like I can get lost in them and I feel the tension between the LI and him better than any other custom Shepard. A great example for me was the kiss scene between Cortez and Shepard/when they hold hands on Citadel DLC. Sheploo kinda defined the series for me, and I didn't even know that he had a face model until I started investigating the content in the third game in a deeper perspective/my massive fandom for the series that grew after beating ME:2 (Note my sign-up date). It isn't just because he's on the box; it's the culmination of a bunch of things (VA, body language, ect) that made Sheploo my version of Shepard.

Note: I will NOT be making a 'Shepard 2' in future Mass Effect games.

Because it's the face used in all marketing for the game. So I actually feel like playing Shepard. My canon Shep is a Sheploo named John.

And this too.

I used Sheploo for my very first playthrough and I got imprinted on the combination of  his face with voice :)
Later, I tried creating custom males, but none worked for me.

For some reason, I don't have this "problem" with femShep (though it's not a problem for me, just the OP, it seems).

The custom face creator just ****ing sucks. I always make hideous Femsheps and Shepards.

The face construction is terrible. Somehow other RPGs (inb4ME3isNotAnRPG) do it right.

I never used default faces for my Shep. male or female. first, sheploo's face doesn't mix well with Claudio Moneta's voice (at least for me) and second...on principle I don't use default.
creating the character is half the fun ^^

I agree is not easy create a good looking character in ME, but I prefer a bad loocking character than a pre made one.
