Ok. So here's the dealio.

I was originally planning on romancing Kaidan seeing as how he and Shepard have a lot of history together. I also like that he could fight alongside Shepard on the battlefield, not to mention he find him somewhat attractive.

But Cortez, recently, has really shocked me. Cortez has the ability to pull at my heartsrings, both sexually (butterflies) and emotionally (chills).  It's hard for me to choose though because while I do like Kaidan, Cortez is one of the only characters who has actually managed to get me emotionally invested in their story/character.  In a way, I kind of don't want to romance Cortez because I feel he's still grieving from the death of his husband and to do so would be kinda ****ty of Shepard.

Kaidan, well I always thought I would end up romancing him.  He's been Shepard's long time pal and they've been through a lot with each other.  On Mars, Kaidan's response to Shepard mentioning how Kaidan's always been kind of stubborn was both playful and endearing.  When Dr. Eva banged him up on Mars, it was definitely sad, but when I saw him in the hospital bed, I barely had an emotional response.  Part of the reason could be due to the fact I don't know him that well as a character.  I'm a PS3 player who started with ME2, so the only in-game experiences I have to draw upon are Horizon and Mars seeing as how he's been absent for most of the first part of the game.  FYI: Right now I'm on Priority: Tuchanka, and I don't believe you get him back until Priority: Citadel II (?).

Cortez, well I always found him attractive, but I felt the whole husband thing was just too intense to start a relationship with him.  The real turning point for me was when he spoke to Shepard in the docking bay and mentioned the Turian Ship.  When he was talking about the ship and used all those technical spacecraft terms, well, he really turned me on.  I thought it was really cool he was sharing his knowledge and his passion with Shepard.  And that scene at the memorial, well I got the chills; it was pretty emotional.

I suppose my question is, who would/did you go for and why?  And will I be able to get to know Kaidan better before I have the option to lock in a romance with him or Cortez?

I've romanced pretty much everybody (lol) and i personally liked Kaidan's over cortez.

what i would suggest is that when you get the "lunch" email from Kaidan and before meeting cortez at purgatory (both locations you lock-in romance if you pick the right options) save the game and see each one differently and pick which one you liked better

While you say you're torn, I get the feeling your leaning Cortez inside more than Kaidan.

So go with your gut. You won't regret it.

Thank you both.

I'll do that for sure.  I would like to see how both play out.

I think you're right. I should just go with my gut. Haha I suppose I just really needed to be told that. :)

Having romanced both I felt more of a connection to Kaidan for a couple reasons. The first being that I had obviously spent a lot more time with Kaidan due to him being in ME 1 and 2. The second being that I prefer his personality, shy/quirky/romantic guys have always been my favorite. Plus as far as appearances go I'd say Kaidan has some of the most expressive facial animations in game, cute little awkward glances and when he's got his game on some seriously irresistible smouldering. Cortez is a good looking guy too but doesn't have quite the same realism injected into his face, which also reflects the sad fact that his relationship, once started, consists of no more than Zaeed-stlye dialogue with a fade to black romance scene.

And that's one of the things I am scared most about with Cortez's romance arc.  I had a feeling that would end up being the case. :/

Go with what you feel is right by yourself or the current Shepard you are using. I went with Thane and we all know how that ends but I would and did do it all over again. His may not be the best romance but he was the right romance for my Shepards.

I've done both.  Both are nice and you know you can do both just play again.   :)

Kaidan's romance night is better but Cortez's in-ship banter is better than Kaidan's.  I think both dates are good.  Kaidan's London goodbye scene is also better than Cortez's.

I appreciate your advice.  You're absolutely right!  I should go with what feels right despite how I feel the romance arc will play out, and who feels right for me is Cortez. I should look at it like this: despite Cortez having lost a husband and his grievance of it, if he and my Shepard end up together it's because he was ready to move on - which I'm sure is the case once he says his last goodbye to his husband at the Memorial on the Citadel.

You're absolutely right! I can play it again and choose the one I end up not going for, but this is my first playthrough.  Idk, it's just a little quirk of mine to have everything as perfect as possible no matter what I do, and considering it's my first playthrough, this Shepard is really special to me.
But thanks for the reassurance that no matter who I choose to romance, both stories are good.

Then I'd take Doodle's suggestion and make the decision after you've tried both dates on the Citadel.  There are Pros and Cons to both.

Cortez invites you to the bar for a drink, he's ready to move on.  Yes, in real life it'd be very fast but they do a OK job of making it clear Shepard isn't forcing himself on a Cortez.

I'd recommend Steve since his Zaeed/Kasumi banter is the best banter ever.
+ Those eyes... :P

yep those eyes are what seal the deal for me..

Besides Kaidan comes across to me as being a bit too uptight. Cortez is more open about things and provokes a more genuine response, from my persp[ective at least.

Steve has a nice looking pair of baby blues but for me they just don't compare with Kaidan's big brown puppy dog eyes.

Plus Kaidan's can turn that lovely shade of biotic blue on a whim.  Something to think about ;)

EDIT* In response to point number 5 in the comment below this one, Kaidan doesn't always just say "Hey Shepard" in regards to his Zaeed-style dialogue, he flirts on at least one (maybe two) occasions and always has multiple things to say based on the previous mission.

1. Steve has the best eyes ever.
2. Biotic powers are unfair.
3. They're both cute.
4. Blue eyes > all
5. "If you wonder why I'm smiling, it's because I was thinking of last night." vs. "Hey, Shepard."
6. - 1000000. <insert explanations here>

All in all, this matter is highly subjective (Steve wins) and you should go with your instincts.

But when they do, it typically means he is about to kill you.

Indeed it is. Personally I find flirting With Cortez to be much more convinving. Kaiden does have a few lines but they aren't as memorable as the ones you get from Cortez:wub:

Though OT, I seriously thought Samantha was being a dirty flirt when she was talking about chess, and especially when her and the commander were playign against eachother. So I was honestly surprised she turned out to be a lesbian.

Yeah she seems to go out of her way to get close to MShep, it's a bit jarring.

Blue eyes KAIDEN might kill you but KAIDAN would never harm Shepard ;)

and while Steve probably does have more memorable flirtation lines the sexiness that is Raphael Sbarge's voice work more than makes up for it.

You say it like Steve's voice is not sexy.
Just listen the "You have that effect on people."

Biotic powers are worth the cybernetic implants. You should consider getting a pair.
Besides, nothing's unfair when you're saving the galaxy. :P

I'll play Sentinel only, but by that I meant Steve doesn't have access to biotic abilities while Kaidan does. Thus, it's unfair. :P Imagine biotic Steve ripping Shep's clot... I mean Steve rules!

I agree with Beep 110%. Although I don't believe I've heard Steve say that line yet, his voice, although not raspy, sexy like Kaidan's, is still hella sexy. The first time I heard him speak I was like, "Oh. Alright. I see you, boy.  I can see u being a  good sweet talker in bed. You're gonna make this decision kinda hard, Steve.  Especially when ur flaunting those gorgeous, almost ridiculously unrealistic blue eyes."

Ahem...but yeah. Steve's voice is sexy.

I apologize, I didn't mean to imply that.  Steve also has a very sexy voice.  Really we should just be appreciative that Bioware gave us these two great guys to choose from.  So much better than the Dragon Age options in my opinion but then again I've never really been into elves.

Have fun.

You can probably go to the specific character threads if you want to discuss one of them more... intimately.
