I've read a few fanfics... But I still don't see my Shep with Vega. But, I do see Vega with Liara (?!).
BTW, I've picked Kaidan for my first playthrough, Steve for second. I like both, but I prefer Steve. He's a real character who is interested in MShep, and MShep (my canon MShep) is interested in men and in Steve. Kaidan and MShep's romance is nice, but felt for me as if neither Kaidan nor Shep were aware that they have feeling for eachother. Ugh, totally unbelievable... Maybe if MShep had some "Kaidan, Alenko, I was interested in you from day one, you idiot." line, okay, but MShep seems just as surprised about his feelings as Kaidan is... No, just no. So, my MShep is gay, he finally gets his man, and Kaidan is just his very good, if not best, friend. M.
I don't think Kaidan ever comes off as being surprised by his feelings for Shepard, though I can see how someone would interpret Shepard as being surprised during the date at the cafe. I however chose to view it as Shepard being a military figure who cared deeply for Kaidan (his reaction to Kaidan being hurt on Mars was proof enough for me) but ultimately was afraid to be honest with himself about the reality of a romance during this time of galactic upheaval and his obligation to stop the reapers.
So when he sounds surprised at the date I viewed it less as "oh I've never considered you as a romance interest" and more "wow you like me too? Having you in my life might give me something live and hope for, a purpose beyond just saving the galaxy just for the sake of doing the right thing all the time." It's also perfect timing because they've had their talks in the hospital and Kaidan finally realizes once and for all that Shepard isn't a cerberus agent after the coup attempt, they can finally trust one another fully.
Kaidan gave Shepard a reason to be less regulatory and loosen up a bit, though unfortunately we didn't get to see the full evolution of this since we're in the middle of the war that requires their attention. There's also the bit on the couch where Shepard expresses regret at being so focused on the mission and will never know what he missed.
I found the rather rapid hooking up of Shepard and Cortez to be more unbelievable and it left me feeling like his rebound guy. Though I'm not hating on Steve, it is a nice idea to have Shepard be the one who helps him overcome Robert's death and eventually turn into something more I just think it happened too fast.
