1) Anders - tied into the plot more than any other character in DA2, veers between romantic and heartbreaking, and end-game really made me think about my view of right and wrong, just and unjust, and changed me.
2) Morrigan- tied into the DA:O plot- amazing reveal of full character, turns Dark Ritual into an act of love, includes Morri + LI running off into the
sunset eluvian. Leaves big questions open, creates a family unit again from what was a history of loss in each of the Origins.
3) Zevran - Fantastic journey from skepticism and cynicism to him realizing that he could and was worthy of loving and being loved. Presents a facade of being shallow, but behind the mask is some of the deepest character writing in-game. Heart-wrenching and wonderful, amusing and bittersweet.
4) Isabela- again, for character development, this is one of the best. She hides who she is behind a facade similar to Zevran's, and despite her outward confidence she's insecure, even to the point of exaggerating her character faults and trying to push Hawke away in one of her Hanged Man conversations.
5) Sebastian- his friend and rivalmances show drastically different sides to the same character, and serve as a method of investigating who Sebastian really, truly is, neither saint nor sinner, neither priest nor prince, but a mixture of all of them, with a great depth of character and self-conflict. Am hoping he will return in DA3 for rivalmance resolutions.
6) Alistair, especially as a non-Cous- forcing Al to the kingship, and forcing him to choose between duty and love, his responsibility to the kingdom and the nobles and his personal wants and needs is a great story arc. Interesting character development if you harden him. No matter the choice with Alistair, none of them result in a "happily ever after," even WITH a Cous. Great stuff.
7) Fenris- a well-written character, and you feel for him. But he doesn't change drastically in a romance, doesn't seem to grow or develop (especially in the case of a mage!Hawke.) A dramatic romance with a great character, yes. Completely optional even to recruit him and non-game changing? Also this.
8) Merrill- also doesn't develop differently in a romance. No real moral quandaries, help her or don't, she doesn't give ultimatums. Not a game-changer and while cute, her romance doesn't affect the plot in any way, no does it seem to develop her character.
9) Leliana- Very, very bugged, leading to dialogues reminiscent of
Fatal Attraction. A character with great development in her DLC, but which seemed rather forgettable in the main game. Romance had no bearing on the story, although her inclusion in the books, movie, and playing a major role as the Left Hand of the Divine may make her more relevant in the future.
