Don't get me wrong, I think it is a good game overall. I just tire of hearing it discussed by both fans and the gaming press as if it is the best RPG to come out in the last few years. I thought the Witcher 2 was superior in just about every way, but had the misfortune of being made by a company that wasn't as well known as Bethesda, and as such didn't get even a tenth of Skyrim's hype.

Weird... Around here all I hear about is Witcher 2.

One could argue the Witcher 2 is overrated. A good number of people prefer the first one. No, I don't think Skyrim is overrated. They are two very different RPGs. I certainly don't want RPGs to be carbon copies of each other.

Witcher 2 is not even close to being a sandbox why compare the two? As someone who never liked the Elder Scrolls I think Skyrim is pretty damn good.

Well I think TW2 deserves a lot of praise so I hesitate to call it overrated. It just seems like it almost has a cult following around here, and I don't really get that.

Now for the question at hand. Skyrim might be slightly overrated I suppose. I like it, but it didn't last me half as long as Morrowind or New Vegas did. I still think it's a solid open world game and a huge step up from Oblivion. I won't complain when a sequel (well, it's sort of a sequel anyway) is a big improvement. Usually it's the other way around.

Its strange... Despite the fact that its the only game that tends to cause my computer to completely crash and possibly overheats my CPU I still feel compelled to defend Skyrim....
Because its that good and I'm just bummed that I can't play it.

Are you sure the game is to blame for your CPU overheating?

I mean usually CPUs are supposed to be able to handle what you throw at them as long as you don't overclock them.

I could force my CPU to overheat when I first tried it. With a simple little program. That's because the stock cooler is a cheap piece of trash. So I got a new cooler.

I run Batman Arkham City no problems
Assassin's Creed (all of them) no problems.
Fallout 3 and new Vegas no problems.
Just Cause 2 no problems.
Deus Ex Human Revolution no problems
Every single high end graphical game I own runs smoothly on almost max settings.
Its Skyrim.

Not my cup of tea. Open world rpg with bland dialogue, bad npcs and missions that are not very interesting imo.

The program I mention just puts 100% load on all cores of your CPU which is way more than any game that I know of. But one that is very CPU dependent would obviously overheat your CPU more easily. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with your computer by the way, I just think they sometimes make crap components that can't keep up with the heat generated under all circumstances. It's not always clear who should be blamed. But I think in general regular non-driver type software should not even be able to overheat your hardware.

Anyway, sucks that you can't play Skyrim. Hope you get it working again some day.

Yeah it sucks cause I was really excited to get back in (took it off to continue my New Vegas DLC run) Now i have no desire to play New Vegas especially with Dawnguard coming out and I really had my heart set on getting back into it.
/shrug I don't get it. I played quite a lot before I stopped the first time so either something with my computer is going bad so it can't run this ONE game or a recent patch did something.

I prefer playing a game that does not tell me "You are X, who feels Y about Z"
I prefer chosing my ROLE in an RPG.

The Witcher 2 is more a Geralt Playing Game, to me then an RPG.

As far as recent open-world games go, I enjoyed Fallout: New Vegas and Red Dead Redemption both more than Skyrim.

Skyrim is all about the world, which is part of the reason why I think it is overrated. It excels as an explorable sandbox but the characters within that sandbox (including the PC) are lifeless and the missions generally very repetitive.

To me Bethesda games have always been a bit of a mixed bag. They do very well in crafting the worlds their games are set in, but do very poorly in crafting interesting characters and dialogue. I had a lot of fun with Morrowind but that was after it had been extensively modded by the fanbase and given some personality.

Honestly I got bored with Skyrim pretty quickly.  Felt too much like Oblivion with content missing.

I think skyrim and witcher 2 were both overhyped to hell. I'm quite enjoying skyrim atm, witcher 2 I'm not as impressed with.

As someone else said they're very different games so why compare them but that hasn't stopped anyone before.

I haven't seen any sandboxes on the scale of Elder Scrolls or Fallout, so it's hard to find a margin for comparison.

The only real problem I have with Skyrim was after 50-70 some odd hours of gameplay, it loses the wonder of exploration that made it good in the first place, and then just becomes repetitive grinding.

Hopefully Dawnguard will breathe new life into it.

Yes

The biggest problem I have with Skyrim is how attributes and ability customization at character creation were removed.

It's good, but not revolutionary.

It's about an 8.5/10

Rated 93 on metacritic? I think it`s fair since 90 seem common these day.

You can find sandboxes on a similar scale if you think of them as single player MMO RPGs.

Yes VERY overrated!!

Don't get Me wrong, It's a good game and is a lot better then Oblivion(the worst in the main series), it's just not..great. Daggerfall and Morrowind are still the best.

What does Witcher 2 have to do with Skyrim? I think CDProjekt did a fine job of marketing that game. It simply didn't connect with quite as large of an audience. You personally enjoyed Witcher 2 more, and others may have enjoyed other recent games more, such as ME3 or Risen 2. And there are also plenty of folks still playing Skyrim after all this time who consider it to be one of the best games in the past few years. And many who enjoyed both Skyrim and Witcher 2.

The hype factor is usually discussed in terms of games with massive pre-release marketing and PR campaigns that turn out to be duds at launch. In this case, you seem to be complaining about honest reviews by fans who actually bought the game, played it and liked it, rather than people who buy in to the "hype" of a game and subsequently regret their purchase.
