As for a comparison with Witcher 2, they are way too different to compare like for like.

Still though I put in hundreds of hours on that game and the sheer amount of things to do and see are impressive.

I think proclaiming things are over rated is over rated in itself (seems to be a new fad on these forums to use such topics of discussions). Personally I think they are rated just fine for the individuals involved. Skyrim is a great game, a lot of fun and with the quality and level of mods will be a long time before runs out of steam per se. Witcher 2 is a great game also, again a lot of fun. I feel that both are good RPG's and push other developers to further the boundries of what they can do to the benefit of the genre as a whole. Perfect games? No...even best games probably not as there is no such thing and I am sure never will be but for the £20-£50 spent they are both worth every penny I think. Always investment vs enjoyment gained as far as I am concerned they are a success in that front for me as a player.
I think saying whats overrated as overrated is overrated.

This is not to say that I dont enjoy the Elder Scrolls games however if video games were resturaunts the Elder Scrolls series would be one of those cheap all you can eat buffets, lots to eat but none of it of a particularly high quality. If it werent for the games modability I would probably give the series a miss.

Morrowind and Oblivion were way better and deeper.
Skyrim feels like a vast ocean only 6 inches deep.

Oh yeah Skyrim is hella overrated, I would even go as far as to say the entire Elder Scrolls series is overrated, sometimes I wonder if most gamers form their opinion of a game based on what they are told the game is or rather what they expect the game to be rather than what it actually is, like they have a picture in their head of what they want the game to be or what they are told it will be and they refuse to see anything else. I really dont care who you are or what your opinion is but this is NOT an epic battle scene worthy of deciding the fate of the whole of Tamriel!

Your right that is not an epic battle scene worthy of deciding the fate of the whole of tamriel.
That is a poorly made video obviously created to ruin said epic battle.

Skyrim is overrated because I see hardly any growth from Oblivion to Fallout: 3 to Skyrim. They still use the same trash combat mechanics, but in Skyrim, they just so happened to remove all the complicated RPG features. I mean Oblivion's leveling system wasn't perfect, but it at least it had the potential to gimp your character. Since it wasn't casual friendly, they scrapped the idea.
Bethesda should stop trying to make RPG games and go ahead and make action games. They have nothing strong in their games other than the incredible background music done by Jeremy Soule. I mean Dark Souls never tries to present itself as a story oriented game, but as one with an incredibley fluid combat system. Skyrim has neither great gameplay or story, which are two of the most important features with combat system/gameplay being the most important.

So good leveling system = being able to gimp your character?

Yeah, it is called the consequence of trying to become a jack of all trades. RPGs aren't supposed to hold your hand; RPGs are supposed to be challenging on several different levels, not just gameplay. If you came into any of the great RPGs like: Dark Souls, Fallout: 1/2, or Planescape and tried to level everything evenly, you will be destroyed in seconds. Skyrim and Fallout: 3 really have no mechanic that kept you from becoming every class in one package.
Either way, Oblivion hardly had anything to gimp your character since you could just select your main attributes as secondary skills or just use weak secondary attacks over and over to get +5 every level-up; it was just nice that you could end up being outclassed if you came into the game not knowing anything.

I like it alot..same as I love the Fallout games bethesda put out and the other Elder scrolls
I haven't played New Vegas yet, but I kind of thought Fallout 3 was way overrated as well. Being a huge fan of both Fallout 1 and Fallout 2, I thought Fallout 3 lacked the personality of it's predecessors. Like most Bethesda games, it was set in a very cool looking sandbox but the characters and settlements are a little dull.
That, and one of the hallmarks of the Fallout series had been that the player's actions had an effect on the game world. At the end there would be epilogues detailing how choices made throughout the game affected the different settlements or major characters. Bethesda, for reasons unknown, tossed that much loved feature out the window with Fallout 3.

I agree with you about Fallout: 3, but you should definitely give New Vegas a try. Obsidian tried its best with the crappy tech, but they came out with a pretty good Fallout game. The storyline, setting, voice acting (main characters mostly), and characters are all definitely on equal footing with the Fallout series, but, sadly, the combat is still the same dull, tired Bethesda combat. If you couldn't stomache the combat system from Fallout: 3, then I would say to stay away. Other than that, you would be surprised what some of the old crew from Black Isle did with New Vegas. I just wish that Van Buren was released and this whole Bethesda and Interplay nightmare wouldn't have happened, well, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel would've still happened

Witcher 2? I loved it. Far as how much BSN loves it, yea, I'd say it's overrated. Some people on here act like it's the second coming of god. Don't get me wrong, it's a very good game but not perfect. It's very niche and that's one reason I like it. Still, some gameplay mechanics are rough in that game and I felt the writing was inconsistent in some areas. I also find it funny some people on here will tear into Bioware's writing but no ill can be said on Witcher 2's writing. I did not think Witcher 2 had great character development either. That's one area Bioware definitely blows away the Witcher games. Zoltan and Dandelion are always interesting characters but I never gain that connection with any in either Witcher game. I never cared much about Geralt or Trish. I also find their relationship very weird. Is it even a romance or are they just **** buddies? Because based on the first Witcher, I'm willing to say it's just a **** buddy relationship.
I don't connect with the characters in the Witcher games like I can for a Bioware game. That's my biggest complaint about them. One area they blow Bioware away though is shades of gray in choices and choices that actually impact your world outside a few characters living/dying. Their exploration and atmosphere also blows away Bioware games. I praise CDPROJEKT for making a mature game that isn't mainstream. Bioware would never do a game with shades of gray, IMO.

For whatever reason, it just didn't feel as compelling as many other games I've played. Can't really say why, but it didn't draw me in like I think it should've done. I found Kingdoms of Amalur to be a lot more fun, and from Bethesda themselves, Fallout 3 was a much more enjoyable game (even though I prefer mediaeval environments) alongside New Vegas.
Like I say, I'm not completely writing off Skyrim, but it's not something I see myself rushing to go back to: it just wasn't engaging enough.
