Also, cloaking and running up to an isolated enemy, then using heavy melee to disintegrate them is fun. (Emphasis on isolated. If there's any enemy who can see you that's outside the range of geth heavy melee, you will get shot up and die.)

I came from a support role in the military...I provided tactical meteorology for combat units. That made my role extremely important to them and in turn made me an an effective part of the team. It wasn't that I wasn't required to fight. I had to carry a rifle as well. But again, I stress, I was more effective giving the team the necessary data they needed tactically.
Cheers
That may have been a heavy support role with little to no fighting but I **** you not, you were like GOD to us pilots because the data you fed us determined if we flew or not.
...snip...
I have no problem playing support to others. I've been support and I've seen the power it wields. You can get the kill if you want and flex your muscles proclaming you are baddest thing since Muhammed Ali but I know who really made it possible for you to even live as long as you did. And you can't see them.
Haha, thanks for the encouragement.
Cheers
Support roles IRL are huge. All the same, thanks for not making a video game about meteorological combat support.
That would quickly turn into a golf game or barbeque simulator
Hey now, not all of us grunts hate on the support guys. I was one of those 11B's who knew that being friendly with support meant getting friendly support.
But back to the game, it's interesting that you bring up military experience. I'm definitely drawn to the direct-damage classes and it

My favorite gun and class don't get enough love so here's a build using both, what do you think?
class: Soldier. My favorite class. Has good shields, can roll, and with this build you don't need a short recharge time so you can carry two larger weapons.
Weapon 1: Falcon. My favorite gun. Great for crowd control and holding hallways. Can shoot around corners as well. The misfiring was patched so you shouldn't have to worry about that anymore. Use the Magazine Upgrade as the clip in the gun is a little short. The Extended Barrel will also increase the amount of kills you get with the gun, but it is important to note that for the most part the weapon is for staggering while others finish off the enemy. AWESOME against PHANTOMS!! Stagger them until they die.
Weapon 2: Claymore. I really shouldn't have to explain this. Awesome gun that can get by shield gate on gold if used correctly. Down sides are the shor clip and the guns inaccuracy. Use Adrenaline Rush to lessen the time spent reloading, and Smart Chock to make it a little more accurate. I also like to put on the Shredder Mod to help against armor. Great against Brutes. Four good shots and they are dead.
Adrenaline Rush: Hardening, Duration, Shield Boost. Very helpful, I use this a lot. restores shields, reduces damage, and is a quick reload for your weapons.
Frag Grenade: Damage, Bleed Damage, Armor Piercing. Great ability and does a lot of damage without having to worry about recharge times.
Alliance Training: Damage and Compacity, Power Damage, Weapon Damage. Helps with your weapons, recharge times, and grenades.
Fitness: Durabilty, Shield Recharge, Fitness Expert. Helps keep you a live adds Health and Shields and shortens shield recharge times.
Equipment suggestions: Incendiary Rounds, Assualt Rilfle Rail Amp, Shield Power Cells, Warfighter Package.
Quoted from a thread I made about the build. I like it, I have fun with it, I do well with it.
So far this is the only build I have found that has no problem with any enemy.

Krogan sentinel
Maxed everything for power damage and defense except nades (and no I don't care about the dps difference, I'm a ****ing Krogan, also incinerate sucks hard and should be replaced with SP incin for Krogan)
Graal, GPS X
Geth engineer
Maxed Weapon damage and health/defense
No Overload
Striker X + GPS X
Krogan Vanguard
Maxed Health and Power Damage, no Carnage (completely dumb power for a vanguard)
Graal, Reegar, GPS, Hurricane
Vorcha Sentinel
Maxed power damage and regen, no nades.
Reegar
All gold solo capable.
Fun not gold solo class:
Phoenix Adept
Maxed power damage, no singularity
Scorpion, Paladin, Carnifex
"business class" build (aka turn brain off farming time)
GI
Maxed weapon damage, no prox OR no health dependent on mood
Krysae, BW, Valiant, Scorpion
Asari Adept
No stasis, maxed combo damage for both casts, maxed health
Scorpion, Paladin
I play every non human class, but those are my go-to's.

Male - 3/6/6/5/6
: Singularity is like the OHSHI- button, if something sneaks up behind me, good distraction.
: Warp / Detonate, Expose, Pierce; helps with them Biotic Explosions with that expose.
: Shockwave, Force & Damage, Detonate, Lifting; 65%? Crazyass explosions that wipe groups in close proximity to eachother.
: Alliance Training, Power Damage & Capacity, Power Damage
: Fitness, HP/Shield, Shield Regen, HP/Shield.
Female - 6/6/6/4/4
: Singularity, Duration, Lift Damage, Expand; most awesome crowd-control. Toss it in the center of most Doors and it covers the entire entrance. Floating people everywhere ^__^ (also nice for the ol' Warp mid-air to send them flying.)
: Warp, Detonate, Expose, Pierce. This is almost standard now for all the warp-capable classes.
: Shockwave, Force & Damage, Detonate, Lifting Damage.
: Alliance Training, Damage & Capacity
: Fitness, HP/Shield
Usually go Phalanx X onry (Pierce/High-Caliber Mods.) with my Human/Asari Adepts for the 200% recharge, respectable ammunition reserve and semi-automatic - tis nice to illuminate those Hunters and Phantoms when they vanish to throw a Warp. As for gear, I lean towards Power Cooldowns to spam the crap out of those Explosions; Structural Ergonomics, I randomly use the consumable Power Efficiency Modules. No reason, just don't like whoring all my consumables for every single possible match.
Dat Shockwave
As for a Weapon Strategy.. well, I put Piercing mods on everything. Laugh at those Guardians :3

Singularity specced for Duration, DoT and Explosion. A fire and forget trap down a hall way, a way to keep a pair of enemies out of the way while still damaging them, and if it dies naturally, a nasty thing.
Lash specced for Damage, DoT and Piercing. My primary form of crowd control, sending enemies flying through the air, left, right, up, back, any which way. If the fall doesn't kill them, the DoT will.
Smash specced for Electricity, Damage and Armor/Barrier destruction. My answer to CQC and heavy targets. Smash the crap outta my enemies, detonate those that got Lashed towards me, set up tech bursts for my fellow party members.
I am a master of CC, and any non-armored enemy will be flung, trapped or smashed with my mind. By far my most effective character, and my most enjoyable.

If I'm ever having a rough round of games, I'll switch to this to try and turn things around.
I prefer to play Drell Adept or any of the Vanguard classes when possible, though.

Another fun/entertaining one is the Batarian Soldier. You gotta love putting the smack down on a Phantom with his heavy melee.

Because I'm greedy I'll tell you about my two favorites.
Geth Minigunner is my new go-to class - GEngineer with everything set to maximize weapon damage, and a Revenant. HM's accuracy bonuses make this gun usable at most ranges, the ROF and bonus damage from HM is icing on the cake. This lets me use both EB and AP mods for serious damage output, overload lets me stun, and the geth turret helps me stay alive whilst being a glass cannon, and staggers folks. Good stuff!
Turian Sentinel (Turian Nice Guy) is not as good solo, but for team play it's awesome. Warp sets up biotic comboes and debuffs armored targets, Overload detonates tech comboes, staggers, and strips shields. Because I'm a scrub I use a Mantis with it and concentrate on headshotting basic infantry to keep their population down.

My fun build is my Asari Vanguard specced for Max Dmg/Single target Biotic Charge and Constant Stasis Bubble-casting. For a while I ran with a Tempest X and Carnifex X but nowadays I run Talon II only with AP and EB. She's my favorite to Solo with due to being able to pull a 300 and use choke points to stomp the ever lovin' crap out of Banshee/Brute, Phantom/Atlas tag teams. (She doesn't like to run into Geth Prime/Pyros).
GHOST OF THE MACHINE BUILD:
Geth Infiltrator specced for Tac Cloak (Long Duration + Epic Snipe Dmg) with Hunter Vision set for Weapons Efficiency. I slap on my Valiant III and my Geth Pulse Rifle X (both with EB and AP mods) and I just tear through my enemies. ALthough somtimes I'll change my paint scheme between matches to look like a Geth Hunter to trollolol my squadmates.
And just recently I unlocked some of the new characters
SHOTGUPUS BUILD:
Phoenix Adept built for Lash/Smash/Singularity for awesome Biotic Explosions and armed only with a Disciple VIII (EB and Smart Choke). And I lash EVERYTHING. Nothing goes unlashed. And if I can't Lash it I smash it and If I can't smash it ... I throw Singularity at it.

Geth infiltrator with Revenant is the most effective build in my book.
4/6/6/6/4 build
Cloak spec for damage bonus rank 4
HM for accuracy/ROF/vision and speed
Proxy for radius/damage debuff/damage
Most of the time I use TC as a maneuver - move behind enemy line, shot a proxy, mow them down with Revenant before they can react. Speed and vision on HM really turn GI into a true hunter.
Actually this build is too powerful and I only use him when lobby filled with "suspicious" loadout.

I also like to play the MQI scanning everything on sight to make it easier for my team to kill Atlases, Banshees, Phantoms and whatnot. I really can't stress how useful the role of a Male Quarian Scanner is.
