what is the idea behind this, the robe of overseer and Enchanter Illana, all look like ordinary chantry robes. Any reason for this or were the devs simply too lazy?

Eeeeeeverybody knows that MAGE PANTS are much better than mage robes. The reason mage robes are weak is because that's what they wear when they're lounging around before or after the hot sex parties, as described by Anders. When they do real work, they wear MAGE PANTS.

In DAO, the mages are lazy and decadent, so they never dressed correctly.

Most powerful mage in the game? Morigan. She can't die. Flemeth? Can die. Was she wearing pants? Incorrect. Wearing a mu-mu? Correct.

All of this has been confirmed to me by someone who was (not actually) a dev.

I meant, the most powerful robes are from the chantry, the most "anti-mage" party in DA world

Well, considering that the chantry provides clothing for the mages, I would assume that most Circle mages wear/wore robes. Enchanter Illana sounds like the name of a Circle mage, so she probably wore clothing provided by the Chantry.

I was going to explain how that's not strange at all, but decided if you hadn't figured out how the mages and Chantry work together by now, it would take too many words to explain again.

The Chantry isn't "anti mage."   They have never made an attempt to wipe out mages.   They, in fact, reined in the previously independent paramilitary version of the Templars and tried to make them into protectors rather than persecutors.  Pretty much failed at that in the big picture, but "Chantry policy" is not anti mage, regardless of whether individual priestesses are.

I'm not entirely sure the chantry would however sponsor legendary level robes that'd make a mage abit of a badass. Just because you cloth a person doesn't mean you arm them.

Mages are the ones who do the enchanting, not the Chantry. I would imagine they would enchant whatever they had available. Which would be robes provided by the Chantry.

I don't have any knowledge about the DA universe except the games, so from my view Templers have the only purpose to control the mages and are a division of the chantry, is that wrong? So how can thre be any group be more against the mages?

I actually agree. The mage pants in DA: Dawn of the Seeker were awesome!

The mage pants in DA: Dawn of the Seeker remind me of these one-piece, hooded pyjamas that I own. They're phenomenally comfortable.

Ahem.

Actually, mage pants make a lot of sense. When there isn't an actual war on, mages spend a lot of their time in cold stone towers doing largely sedentary things. Skirts do nothing to keep the drafts out. When there is an actual war on, mages spend a lot of their time moving around and fighting things. Long, dew-soaked robes slapping around the ankles must get really annoying. Although there is that whole "Everybody kissing everybody" thing that Anders mentioned. Robes are said to be useful there.

But yeah, I'm definitely in favor of greater variety in the mage wardrobe department. It would be beyond cool if players could decide whether they wanted it to be a robe or pants. Say if you equipped an item in one slot, it was robes; in the other slot, it would be pants. It would probably be more trouble than it's worth. Maybe just offer enough cool stuff in both categories to provide variety.

I hated the MotA mage robes. Why would my mage want to dress up like a chantry priest, when he'd rather set them on fire?

I usually play Legacy and MotA post-game, and my mages keep their Champion robes on, despite the dlc "upgrades".

I bought the mage dlcs just because of all the ugly robes except mapybe the champion dress, beside the robes are also not really realsitic for renegade mage. On top of that the DLC robe is copy of existing main robe

Yeah, the templars control the Chantry controlled Circles, and the templars are subordinate to the Chantry of Andraste. Meredith is subordinate to Grand Cleric Elthina. People have different views of the Chantry, depending on whether they agree or disagree with the Chantry controlled Circles.

Considering how some view the Chantry and the templars, they see them being against the mages because of their conduct. As Cullen says, templars have "divine right" over mages; that's an issue for some people.

I tend to find the DLC mage outfits tend to look the best. The low-to-mid-level mercenary outfit from the first Mage Pack looks pretty badass. And the barbarian chainmail robes from Mage Pack 2 were pretty much all my Mage!Hawke wore in mid-to-high levels.

What's to hate? Those chantry robes the sisters have on are VERY top-notch, I just wish you could put that big hood on then they'd be perfect.

no, they weren't.  with the exception of the lead, they were all in yoga pants and hoodies.  i wear robes, yoga pants, and hoddies at home to be a schlump.  they do not spell badass just because they're pants.  ROTC, Warden Issue Robes, ROTNP, the apostate's robes you start with in DA2...THOSE are awesome.
