That was one unnecessary tl;dr just to insinuate that "weary" equates to "emotionally unstable." Which it doesn't.

And I'm no fan of either Carth or Kaidan's voice acting (the delivery was fine, but the voice always grated on my ears--like they were perpetually high/the surfer stereotype/needed a bloody big glass of water), but there's nothing in the story at all that even suggests that he is at risk for a violent psychotic break. That's just silly.

You're right, there's not. I never said there was, I said that was my interpretation. It is not perpetuated by anything canon to the story itself, and I never said it was. Your first post left an opening for me to elaborate on how I came to that viewpoint so I did. I'll gladly do it for any of the other characters too, since character is pretty much the only of aspect of Mass Effect I think is worth discussing.

worrisome over-emotional type who seemed to be just one psychotic breakdown away from going ballistic and gunning down every on deck 3 before the security team could put him down.

Really. That's what you got from his character.

Impressive.

Yes, that's what I got.  Mind you, I think it's a perfectly fitting and engaging character archetype. The battle weary but steadfast soldier?  I liked it, I think it's a character that's actually not shown often enough in military games.
Ashley Williams is just the generic bad ass female soldier and would be easily overlooked if not for that anti-alien sentiment she has which gives her some level of personality beyond just "MARINE CORPS. HUT!"

I'll also concede that a big factor of my own dislike of Kaidan stems from Raphael Sbarge's voice acting because I've always found his delivery a little too heavy handed, which is kind of funny since I've seen him in live-action shows like Law & Order and actually liked him quite a bit.  I just find that his VA performances almost always lean towards this soul-weary sound of introspective emotional turmoil for <insert reason here>.

So yeah, personally think there's plenty of reasons to like (and dislike) both characters, but Kaiden gives me a much stronger paranoia of "dedicated soldier who has no idea he's on the verge of breakdown until it's too late" and that sort of response is what led to my precognitive Commander deciding that, for crew security, it was wiser to let Kaidan die a hero on Virmine.

Someone's never played Republic Commando (Sbarge is Scorch):

Delta Three-Eight "Boss": [dying, while the squad is under fire] Need bacta... commandos...
Scorch: Can you die later, sir? It just isn't a good time now.

Scorch: I think we may have to blast our way through that... And I'm *not* just saying that because I love to blow stuff up.
Sev: Yes, you are.

[if the player accidentally blows himself up]
Scorch: And that's why explosives needs special training.

I just loved him in that game.

Jesus, this joke is just very original. Perhaps you are some kind of genius here?

Your sarcasm is almost as apparent as Ashley's ignorance.

Justice doesn't need originality. That's why many super heros wear similar outfits.

So Scorch likes to blow things up?

Cue mental image of Virmire, Kaidan at the bomb site, Shepard on her way to the AA towers.
Shepard: What the hell are you doing Alenko?
Kaidan: Was it Red, Red, Green or Red, Green, Red?

Thanks for that.

Edit: That's so OT. Shutting up now.

Mega sovereign you are a troll ash is awsome honestly making a troll thread is probably your way of feeling better because your life probably sucks

I hate Ash. Not really trolling about it.

And I love that amazing leap of logic of yours. I guess my life really does suck.

You make a thread that looks like a pro ash thread on title and then lay on the hate to get people that like ash to get mad that's trolling and the logic is you have to insult others and cause anger to escape your life

Misleading thread titles don't equal troll threads.

I can tell you to go home and expect a million dollars coming to you only to see you rush off and yell, "gotcha!".  A company can tell you all that you'd expect from a product and get your hopes up, only to say "gotcha!" when you fall for it.  You create a thread with a title that appears supportive and the content has you saying, "gotcha!".

It's a troll thread.  You played Ash supporters for suckers.  Own up to it.

I saved her because Kaiden gets a charity fund opened up in his name in ME2.
All she gets is a couple of medals if she dies...

Mind = Blown!

I did not know he was Scorch! That's quite enlightening, although it does leave me wondering what it was about his voice for Kaidan that I disliked so much.  I'd say it was the Carth Onasi thing that most folks attribute it to, except I didn't play KOTOR 1 so I'd never even heard of that character before encountering Kaidan for the first time. Damn I may have to go back and replay ME1 just to try and figure it out.
