Two suggestions, based on how you feel about Carnage. One is my Soldier, the other is my Sentinel. I haven't taken the Soldier to Gold yet but he does pretty great on Silver. Your mileage may vary.
Soldier
Built to run and gun like any good Soldier, with Carnage as a good utility power. Good for incapacitating targets and detonating allied tech bursts (or your own, if you have Disruptor Ammo).
Sentinel
Built to be in the enemy's face and delivering the burn. Use Flamer's on/off switch to control the bursts to light a target up and then take to them with your gun, or just hold it down and watch them scream. Great for armored targets, but be careful to dodge to the side and around corners when the target turns its attention to you.
Use whatever guns you find enjoyable. I personally use the Revenant for the Soldier build so I feel like a Vorcha heavy weapons specialist and the Reegar for the Sentinel build for the one-two punch of stripping shields and then roasting the squishy bits with the Flamer. You can combine the two but I don't find it sporting myself.
The Sentinel was taken almost directly from Stardusk's guide, though the Soldier differs from his as I prefer a regenerating bullet hose to a melee build.
EDIT: This would also be useful, and I forgot it initially. The biggest trick to Gold Vorcha is to know when to dodge into cover. They can stay up through a massive amount of punishment and walk out of a crowded room unscathed, but there are limits. Side/back rolling is your friend. Just do it until you get around cover or just to break the enemy's line of sight on you to get your health back. You only need a little time to be back in fighting shape, just pay attention to when you need to take a breather.

I go melee build with a Claymore. 6/6/0/6/6 Bloodlust: Health, weapon, health. Flamer: Damage, Damage, Shields. Passive: Weapon, Headshot, Damage. Fitness: Melee, melee, melee. Go for light melee attacks to build up Bloodlust and heavy ones to get Martial Artist working.

6/6/0/6/6 with Bloodlust: health, weapon, health; flamer: damage, reach, armor. Resilience: capacity, power damage, weight reduction, fitness: shields, melee, shields.
equip a mattock to deal with far-off enemies and guardians and melee everything nearby, use flamer on everything, interrupting with a melee so shields drop. seek out brutes and ravagers and bathe them in fire, but get some stacks first so you can take some hits. use the mattock on banshees till the barrier drops and then use your flamer with range to spray them down. if you don't like the mattock, then a scimitar shotgun also works well right after a melee hit.
note: flamer will NOT go through guardians' eye slots.

I use pretty much this. The only changes I got are: armor damage for Flamer, power damage for ranks 4 and 5 of Passive, and health for rank 4 of Fitness(I'm considering changing this to melee though).
I mod the Claymore with EB and Bayonet and carry a Carnifex with Piercing and EB as a back-up/Guardian killer. For equipment, shotgun amp or strength enhancer for weapon(I prefer strength, but that will change when I get around to fixing Fitness), Adrenaline mod for armor, and Incendiary for ammo. For gear Berserker Package is ideal, but either Hydraulic Joints or Shotgun Amp will work if unavailable.
I won't claim this is an "ideal" build, but it works quite well for me while doing r/r/g even though I'd only consider my skills silver caliber.

I just got a Vorcha sentinel and was going to try it out, not sure what gun to take. I do not have a Claymore. Recommendations?

personally i dont put points into carnage.
equip a claymore to oneshot smaller enemies and use flamer on bosses
try to use the soft cover so only the arm with the flamer is exposed

Your Eviscerator or your Talon.
