I'm currently running a game where I've have Leliana decked out in Chasind Robes(+6 defense) and a pair of boots(+3 defense) instead of armor. She seems to be faring fine so far, but the only area I have been to after Lothering is Honnleath to get Shale. Will focusing on defense modifier items instead of armor be a viable long term strategy?
Thanks.

Well defense will make her being hit less, while armor will make her take less damage if hit.
If you want to continue her as an archer i wouldn't take too much care there, as she shouldn't be fighting up close. Generally speaking defense is better for rogue type characters (they usually have better def anyway, because of higher dex), while armor is better for warriors (although there are dex- based tanks that avoid being hit).

well shes a bard rogue so its more viable to put points in dex(attack/defence and arrow dmg) and cunning(for bard buffs, skills and armor penetration) than strength(req for more armor), so yeah stick with that if you want her as a useful archer.
