Since an expansion is out of the question, how would you like to see Hawke's story concluded? In Sonnet? (I am curious to how you feel and not being a smart alec)

This is actually pretty much the setup I've been thinking of. At some point in DA3, the new PC can encounter Varric, who offers to tell the story of what happened to Hawke, if the player wants to hear it. But instead of simply having Varric talk, they could do a neat callback to the framed narrative by allowing us to play as Hawke during the story. It could be about the length of moderate-to-decently-sized quest, and take things into account such as whether you sided with the mages or Templars and who your companions were. Potentially the player could have the chance to decide what happens with Hawke at the end. Most Definitely Sane wrote...
Maybe we see Varric in a tavern, and we get an option to talk about the legend of Hawke?
Then Varric tells you an unbelievable end and you can push the topic a bit more, and then Varric tells the story of the last adventure he had with Hawke.

I actually really like this idea. Most Definitely Sane wrote...

Then Varric tells you an unbelievable end and you can push the topic a bit more, and then Varric tells the story of the last adventure he had with Hawke. After that, he can say he doesn't know what happened to him/her, but he believes that Hawke is still alive. Or dead. Depending on what the writers decide.

I like this idea because it allows for Varric to make an appearance by acting in his ideal role as storyteller, and allows for logical cameos from the other DA2 companions. Rather than a convenient "Oh, Fenris, Isabela, and Aveline all wound up in Orlais for some reason," they would be (potentially) included in the flashback story. This would also allow for the player's DA2 choices to be recognized and given a bit of followup and closure, while not taking focus away from the main story of DA3 for too long. And if someone really doesn't care what happened to Hawke, they can just tell Varric they don't want to hear the story right now.
